Market - Skelton 2 Nicholls 0
In reality the way the game is it wouldn't surprise at all if it ends up being the exact opposite, or indeed something beats both of them. |
By:
You really need to know who is backing the Skelton horses - is it the owners? If they are, doubtful they will be farting about at the back.

At Chepstow the 2 hc chases look interesting.
Magical Escape 2.35 - has been left on the same mark as for his promising 2nd on chase debut at Exeter. Also has some good times and form over hurdles here and might have a fitness edge on some and improve today for in form trainer Bailey. Can You Call 3.10 - ran well in this race on 1st start last season and has had a wind op since. On same hcp mark today and stable is starting to get going. Has some smart time figures over fences too. Should both be e/w prices. GL all today ![]() |
By:
Magical Escape jumped sketchily and was under pressure early on the final circuit. He plugged on into 5th btn nearly 30 lengths for anyone who took the 5 places on the exchange at slight odds on (not me I might add!).
Can You Call either needed the run or was never put in the race depending on ones view on such things. A bit galling as he beat the winner in this race last year and was weighted to confirm the form. ![]() |

Not sure anyone would have made anything backing either Nicholls or Skelton today. More in the bookies satchels. Despite being by Black Sam Bellamy don't think the Nicholls horse in the first wanted the soft ground. Consequently, I doubt the winner beat a great deal. It goes without saying a sensible ride and the Skelton horse wins the bumper. Again no reason at all why he needed to give the winner a start. Hardly surprising it was a market drifter.
By:
The Nicholls winner was very impressive, though the ride on the Skelton horse was very odd. Couldn't have found more trouble. It was as though he knew thexwinner was gonna win and didn't want to finish too close to it.
By:
He rode it 4-5 lengths further back than the one in the first race. Why? It didn't jump very well so all the more reason why it needed to be closer. As it was he dropped even further behind.

DD I thought The new lion was incredibly impressive today. Time was good in the conditions and could have won any amount. Just looked class in to my eye. I’ve taken the 40/1 for Ballymore and it was equally impressive in Challow would be 12/1 or less.
By:
Good luck.
Some good horses have won the Challow, but not sure any have doubled up. Maybe the irish will have a crack this season? The question with any horse winning easily at this stage of the season is what are they beating? At least The New Lion has done it twice. Strange how he was pulled several times last season when the ground was testing. His fill sister put up her best perfomance on soft, and the best horse in the recent family history, Golden Silver, excelled in the mud. Another concern would be Skelton's commitment to Cheltenham relative to Aintree, but you don't need much at 40/1 to find that out. For what it's worth, I have backed Minella Premier. He was visually the most impressive winning pointer last season. Simalarly, to the novice hurdles, maybe there wasn't much in behind, but he couldn't have won any easier. Not the usual Henderson type - Bobs Worth was a notable exception - hopefully, the trainer doesn't try and convert him into a speedball. He's now a similar price to The New Lion. I don't think last season's more exposed bumper horses were that good. I backed Let It Rain, Quebecois, and Argento Boy in the Champion Bumper. Let It Rain didn't make it, and the other two found it all too much on the day. I think Let It Rain would have gone very close. I wouldn't put anyone off her for the Mares' Novice, although again I am on Henderson recruit, who hopefully, will do better than Epatante and Marie's Rock. |
By:
he might not bew fav to beat pumpkins who won the next so thinking UK from nowhere has 2 to beat the Irish brigade is atadoptimistic,if hendo has a few the Irish novices might as well stay at home this yr

Willie saying he's training Gaelic Warrior fir the Champion Chase. If it's not going to plan then the Ryanair and Gold Cup are other options. Interesting to see how that works out.

I have gone against the markets and the general Mullins speak. I hope the racecourse will move things in my direction.
On performance I don't think there is any way that Fact To File should be 4/1 and Inothewayurthinkin 16/1 for the Gold Cup. I know one race was a handicap but the latter was the more impressive of the two in winning at Cheltenham and Aintree. Had Iroko not got in the way I think Fact To File would have won the Turners, and the current markets would now look very different. It wasn't a great Brown Advisory and he wasn't that impressive in asserting late on. I think his passage has been complicated by winning his bumper over an extended trip. Personally, I think he is more speed over stamina. That said it would be no bad thing to be a strong stayer at the Ryanair trip. Two miles looks right for Gaelic Warrior so I wouldn't see him forming part of any discussion, but you never know for sure with the trainer. |
By:
Toby Lawes - problem with the horses, or problem with the trainer?
Amazingly, I Play County managed to run even worse than Support Act. Irrespective of fitness, both jumped terrible. Will probably train about 4 winners this season with Harvey no doubt banging on about what a good trainer he is. |
By:
Walsh is a contrary bugger at the best of times. That was an okay performance from Brighterdaysahead, certainly no better than that. The second favourite has run a shocker, and second horse is exposed. On that evidence Champion Hurdle talk is just piffle.
By:
Unless I think they're a cert DD I generally swerve the Mullins runners at this meeting.
By:
I thought Brighterdaysahead ran very well. Actually thought could finish 3rd today and be on track for Mares. Daddy Long legs is in and out performer and King of Kingsfield is good first time out and has run some big races against Ballyburn and co.
Once she returns to a more suitable track and back against her own sex she must be extremely hard to beat. On the weights today she couldn’t win (handicap) but is improving and could be very special. |

Henderson has 6 at Ascot tomorrow. No thanks. Luccia should win but I will oppose the rest.
By:
By:
Last at Wetherby is the negative side of jumping. 4 of 6 out of the race at the first!
By:
And still the Skelton hotpot got beat!
By:
All commentators still lazily crowing on about how well Skelton is doing. It's actually 2 out of the last 17 with several beaten favourites, and the two winners were fortunate, one helped by Luccia, and the other by Sean Bowen. Plenty of time Skelton looks more of a liability than an asset. Jump weighing room getting closer to the mediocrity of the flat.

Another bites the dust. Harry doing a fair impression of the piston, but to know avail.
By:
the money horses ,have that much in hand they can afford to be held up miles of the pace, lots of the others ridden the same way are running their races just to get in to contention at the last,2 today will have went very short in the run
By:
Still the old favourites stables doing well
Kim Bailey and Venetia yesterday And the new ones, like James Owen had only one you could back today, absolutely sluiced d in |
By:
In form trainers today...
James Owen has 8 runners in both codes over 5 meetings... A few seemed to have been supported, including Good Karma 4.02 Kemp and Dillydingdillydong 4.30 Wolv Kim Bailey has one in the first at Hereford, Jeudidee Neil Mulholland runs 4 today as well... Plumpton 12.58 Blue Las, 4.10 Batwomen and Hereford 3.45 Princess T look the likely ones Gl all |
By:
good luck Reg. I would certainly include Joe Tizzard in my list but broadly agree with yours.
By:
If there is one horse Pauling must get a win….it must be Fourtowns. Owned by Fitzstares his main financial backing at the yard. 1.38 Hereford today and not much to beat. Could be today ?
By:
Hoping Ben Buie might go well back at 2m in the 4.20 Her (4 places) after a promising prominent run over further last time at the course. Also Tour Ovalie in the 3.45 should go well based on his course form/speed ratings after his 'gentle' come back run at Wincanton. GL all

Poor stuff over the next two days, but some potentially decent novices entered at Chepstow on Wednesday. Dry week, let's hope they actually run.
Very surprised that Let It Rain isn't starting over two miles. Why? Has her schooling not been good enough to risk her over the minimum? |
By:
Hi DD it's my pals horse which I think I mentioned last season, they've just been desperate to get a run into her,the aim is obviously the Mares novice and he's backed her already but like with the bumper last season anything can happen,no secret that they rate her but in the immortal words of Mandy Rice-Davies "He would say that wouldn't he?"
![]() |
By:
Yes, I remember the discussion. I believe she would have gone very close to winning. As for Wednesday, assuming she runs, she could have run in the two-mile race. The first division looks much the weaker, but likely she would have gone off short for either division.
By:
Yes he likes a bet but will be prohibitive price no doubt,at least the Hobbs horse should give her a test,if all goes according to plan i'ts Newbury Hennesey day then Aintrre boxing day.
By:
Having mentioned Tizzard, I managed to not bet his 2 winners today that didn't seem fancied! I did back Irish Hill though despite the stable form.
By:
The Tizzard stable has usually never been a lucky stable for me, like you I have managed to miss his 2 winners today.
By:
I thought Irish Hill was going to get done. Big difference between the jocks on the run in.
Skelton's winner at Plumpton again looked fortunate. |
By:
Ben Buie again ran well at the course to be 3rd, with the race being won by Matt Sheppard with Famoso who also had course form but I had down as sometimes being a bit of a weak finisher. Sheppard sponsored the race, and the jockey punched the air as they crossed the finishing line. Sometimes things are too obvious!
Tour Ovalie found a bit of trouble behind horses 1 out but once she found daylight she stayed on well to just get up. ![]() |
By:
Trainer has done well with Famoso. Nicholls soon gave up on the project.
By:
Yes, he certainly had it primed for today...
