Good news. Been doing a bit of prep, and haven't watched a race all week, but will be having a look at Chepstow today. Quite competitive although it looks a weak Persian War. Most of the markets seem to be all about who is thought to have their horses the fittest. Punters in for a bad time if Nicholls blows out. Just threw the one dart at Beachcomber in the novices handicap. The 14/1 looked a bit too big.

Pumpkins horses just seem to be needing the run imo, I'd give them a miss at the prices

I have done Moon Hunter eway, always best fresh.

This used to be a 1 day meeting on the first Saturday in October. The BBC used to televise it when they used to give a fcuk! Was a starting point for some of the stars of the day. I remember pumpkin riding Playschool for D H Barons in the 3 miler.

If my memory is correct on my first visit to Chepstow the unbeaten hurdler Deep Wealth trained by Fred Winter was killed in action , looked a real prospect and ran in the Gaye Brief colours for the Sheikh i think , sad day   Sad

Stand to be corrected as it was an awfully long time ago.

Not quite according to Timeform 82/83. He collapsed and died being led back in after falling in the Panama Cigar Final. He was unbeaten in three, but had only won his previous start by a short head and Timeform gave him 131? so some way behind the best novices. Closely related to Fifty Dollars More and raced in those colours.

Could be a nice pot for Flying Fortune to win today before the better horses come out

If you're looking for someone who's horses might be fittest?
Kim Bailey has Destroytheevidence in the 4.25, trading at 8 plus on here

3 out of 4 winners plus a 2nd that, imo, should have won too

It would be interesting if Chapman asks Nicholls how fit his horses are that sre running today. But he won't.

Ample evidence already that unless you know something it's madness taking short prices.

Thankfully a straight forward win among all the other goings on today.

Missed the price with Washington later. May still bet it as the Derham/O'Brien combo won plenty with this type last season that I backed. And the trainer has no problem getting them fit first time out.

DD Beachcomber ran well until the slow pace quickened. Most in that race could've done with a stronger gallop. The Hobbs horse in particular.

Well done Reg. You have certainly hit the mother lode this week with Bailey. I piled in on that one as well. Didn't look the winner most of the way but they are clearly fitter than most as are Tizzards.

Beachcomber doubled in price read into that what you want. Contrast O'Neill's ride (on a horse that didn't touch a twig) with the front two. He's set off with little more aspiration than to jump round. There can't be a punter out there who hasn't been frustrated by this jock and trainer combination.

Shows how fit they had this horse considering how hard it pulled early on. Also shows once again that trainers can get them fit early if they want but don't due to other targets later on.

Just to try and continue the thread into a second day. Backed a few last night. Did consider Mighty Bandit in the second in the second, but he is very weak in the market. A disaster over hurdles since the switch, he has shown a little bit of form on the flat, but needs to do much more to justify the price tag. Springwell Bay has the ability to win the novice chase, but who knows with this outfit. They can hardly hide him away in a five runner race. I took a punt on Josh The Boss at a big price last night. He has halved in price, but I think any softening of the ground is a disadvantage, and his inexperienced jock also a negative. At least he seems best fresh, should go forward, and usually jumps well. I thought Jetoile had a decent chance in the handicap chase. Again goes forward, has a couple of course wins, but for some reason he has drifted. The concluding bumper doesn't look that strong. David Pipe really needs to up his game this season. Harry Junior has the best pedigree, and is the sort of horse Pipe should be making an impact with. These days he probably hasn't got that many of these types in the yard. It seems he likes to use Chepstow as a starting point for his better one's, Jurancon being an example for the same owners last year. Unlike that one, the pedigree of Harry Junior would suggest he wouldn't want it too soft.

Any other views?

Don't really fancy anything today but picked out 3 for different reasons to punt each way for small stakes...
3.20 Tune in a box... 9.4
4.00 Jetoile... 8.8
4.35 Stolen Silver... 5.5

Good luck all

I also like the look of Jetoile. Has always run well on his first start of the season, is 3 from 3 at the course and comes out well on my course speed figures. Maybe the drift is to do with the stable form, 0 from last 24 and 3 from 62 season to date. Bit of a worry I must admit. GL all, would be nice to have an ongoing NH thread this season with no idiots ruining it!Cool

The 1.35 has just 5 unraced 3yo novices. Are there none in training this season?
2.10. Despite some setbacks yesterday I am backing Liari to bring a welcome winner for Paul Nicholls.
3.20. Philip Hobbs is putting his best 2 hurdlers in the same race here. Lowrys Bar looked really decent until losing a shoe and bleeding last time out while Into The Park won a competitive hurdle at Taunton before a slightly disappointing fourth at Newbury. I intend to back both.
4.15. Stolen Silver for Sam Thomas who had 2 run well yesterday.

Think O'Neill got lucky in that first. Actually outridden by Patrick. Why give the leader 3-4 lengths easy lengths? Nearly paid the penalty at the second last, but the horse's ability has eventually bailed the jock out.
