Cheers SR. A decent finish after a dodgy start. How My Midnight threw it away at the last I’ll never know. Should have been two winners at Clonmel.

As Delboy said "We've had worse days Rodney!" - it seems everybody that posted selections/races must have had a pretty good day!
Apologies if I have missed anybody out but the summary looks a bit like this imo (appreciate you all prob got better than ISP but using ISP for simplicity): Kenny: 4 ew selections (Taking the 19:20 Booom on trust! ) and assuming the others were the obvious filth? 1 unplaced and 3 winners (5/2, 2/1 & 5/2).Skip: 3 ew selections in a patent 2 placed (at 3/1, & 2/1) and a winner at 4/6 (would imaging you got much bigger). Johnmn: 7 ew selections, 3 unplaced, 1 placed at 2/1 and 3 winners at 5/2, 2/1 & 5/1. Biff: 1 ew selection, (expect you did a few other winners too but thanks for drawing attention to this one) 1 winner at 5/2. Stewart:2 ew selections (on this thread) 6/1 winner and 12/1 second beaten a head by stablemate + I know you posted winners elsewhere (again!) Shirl: You need to stop betting ew in Handicaps! - just kidding do what you like - 1 ew selection placed 2nd at 8/1. I managed to reduce my stakes and avoid doing any multiples - so obviously everything I bet on won! at 5/2, 2/1 & 5/2 The slow drip fills the bucket! I have got some things on tomorrow but I will try to post - it doesn't look great at first glance though. |

Friday - from my perspective:
14:40 Newc: 7unners!! Market currently indicating a 2 horse race between the 2 horses that have raced but 5 x FTO. Wait/watch but probable ew Mr Carpenter. 15:50 Newc: Ascension making the market but it just looks (to me) like one of those races with a longish odds-on fav and too many place options due to not enough to go on (except for the market) - i.e. too many lightly raced or First Time Out. - Wait/watch but quite probable pass. 16:45 Kilb: Nice short fav but possibly too competitive for me and its's Kilbeggan! - Pass. 18:40 Kemp: Doesn't look too competitive at all! Would like to see market develop - Wait/watch but probable ew play. 19:20 Kilb: Market has/could take on a nice shape - I do like NHF on occasions but it's Kilbeggan - Pass. I'm in and out a bit today but will post if/when I can and look forward to any other views/ideas. |

3.50 Newcastle Small ew bet on Panist
6.10 Kempton Byzantine Empire - unraced but I’ll have a little go at it ew 6.40 Kempton Hot Summer - the market only gives three a chance at early prices and I’ll go with the Hannon horse 7.20 Kilbeggan Memories Remain - This looks the best ew of the day to me. No doubt I’ll come to regret that statement at around half seven. All the rest of the days non handicaps paying three places look too competitive to me so I’ll stick to the four above. Good luck. |

Well for what it’s worth my bets today are:
1.35 Ascot Ropey Guest - simply taking on the unraced horses 2.10 Ascot Pocket Square - as above 2.15 Stratford See the Sea - obvious to all on here 3 ew singles to varying degrees 3 x ew doubles and a smaller ew treble. Good luck with your selections today. |

Morning all, - sorry I am late on parade - I had a busy day yesterday but unfortunately I still managed to find the time to lose a few quid!
![]() Not too much damage done in the 14:40 at Newcastle (Mr Carpenter 2nd). However I then did 2 each way in the 18:40 Kempton (Jean Baptiste 2nd - thought it was gonna be the nice priced winner for a few moments! - but no damage done), unfortunately I also managed the dreaded unplaced selection (Hot Summer 4th). So not a disaster but a somewhat unexpected end to a very nice run of results. Today in the 14:15 (as others have already said) See The Sea looks a bit of an ew no brainer but I think that is it for me today. Hi Jonmh - Ropey Guest (13:35) has me totally stumped. It is the kind of horse I would (formerly) have loved to lay OR bet against. I think it is over-rated, has been flattered in very good/valuable races, has been over-reached in it's placement, might not be 100% genuine, expected to see some head-gear tried by now, etc, etc. But in the race today and the way that race is made up, I have an almost overwhelming desire to BACK it! I hope it wins for you - and I will possibly be on it ew too if they go OTT about either/both of the newcomers - but at the moment it still looks like going off fav (and I can't be having it ew at a favs price). Will be cheering it on either way. GL |

Think there may be 1 or 2 at Stratford but only in 6/7 runner races.
3.25 Best Not Argue, 6 runner field in this seller and bottom 2 are totally out of form, so virtually a 4 horse race paying 1st 2. The other 4 are slightly trickier to seperate but Elliott trained 2 of them until recently, Let Skeaping go after winning a seller by 14 lengths and has been btn twice for new trainer, GE should know how his horse stands against that one, but his stable has been having a quiet patch recently and after opening at 2.2 had drifted right out to 5.7, back in slightly now, but looks a bad sign to me, leaves me with just Ballyellis for NTD who does really well this time of year but has a very poor record with the wretches he runs in sellers, jockey has had hardly any rides for ages either, looks to have a chance on form but prefer Kellys horse about 11/4 for the 1-2, with NTDs the likely danger. 4.35 Competition-Should go close for Dr Newland, just pipped the other day at Worcester by a course specialist, with previous winner for in form Michael Blake in 3rd, hopefully should place at least. 5.10 Think Bagan and Atlantic Storm can fight this out, both C/D winners and little between them on times of their wins. 2.45 Ascot-hard to see last years winner Ripp Orf being out of the frame, very good C/D form always there or thereabouts. |

Schoolboy error by me on Ropey Guest. Typically the second fav goes in at 7/2. What was I thinking? I’m slightly drawn to Hello Baileys 3.05 Thirsk.

Things look a bit thin on the ground to me today.
2.55 York - Perfection ew to a small stake 3.25 York - The market is struggling to split the 2nd and 3rd favs and it’s the dead 8 so I’ll probably swerve it. 4.20 Font - Clever as a Fox might be the one to small stakes. Dead 8 again. 2.00 List - A wave of sea at the moment but something is telling me to swerve it. 3.35 List - looks competitive for the places. Perfection is the only definite for me at the moment to small stakes. Good luck. |

Morning John! - I'm late on parade again! - it's been a weird week on the domestic front as (unexpectedly & uninvited!) a couple of visitors showed up on Thursday and have only just left now!! Who the feck does that completely unannounced! - We met them on holiday 7 (seven!) years ago and admittedly got on very well as we shared a table for dinner for 14 nights. Never heard from them at all since then and don't remember giving them our address (my wife is probably guilty) as if I had given an address i would have given a phone number too! - No idea what they were planning to do if we had moved house or been on holiday!! Also if they had our address all that time where the feck are the last 7 Christmas cards imo??! Rant over.
No ew bets for me today. I should be able to resume posting more regularly (sorry folks!) next week - might do a late night (at a glance) preview of the day ahead, a morning update with selections and then maybe even a review of the day after racing. In theory it should help me focus on my selectivity - in practice I think some of you might lead me astray! GL |

By:
BTW John - i didn't have a bet on the 13:35 at Ascot yesterday (I watched it in a shop whilst placing some bets on the 14:15) but I don't think you made a schoolboy error - I think the market just got it horribly, horribly wrong! - and by doing so, diverted you (and me!) away from a nice priced winner! In a former life, using a different MO, Ropey Guest (at 5/4 ISP) or any horse at 5/4 with that profile, would have been my lay of the Century!!
It's a prime example of price being everything imo, this is what I wrote yesterday: Hi Jonmh - Ropey Guest (13:35) has me totally stumped. GL I know I covered all the bases there but I stand by all of that - because I think that horse & that race beautifully demonstrates the importance of the maths and that price is everything (for me anyway)! - At different maths/prices, the same horse running in the same race really could have been my "lay of the century" (at a silly short price - 5/4 - when I used to operate that way) for all the reasons above. Or with an official rating of 99 (whoops! ) and Adjusted Postmark of 110 it could equally have been (imo), a very nice little each-way selection at 7/2+, 8 runners exactly and running against mostly un-raced dangers that were unlikely to be given a very hard race FTO.Either way, despite being horribly conflicted - I really didn't expect it to try making the running! (especially at a moderate pace) - It was a really odd race imo. It will probably win a Listed race now (in first time headgear!) to make me look a total @rse. But I do think it's a classic example of why Price is Everything. I know you already knew that, so not trying to patronise or rub it in - but I wanted to get it off my chest because, like you I suspect, I feel like I cheated myself out of a 7/2 winner! GL - out for the day now. |

No good yesterday with Perfection finishing in fourth place. Having looked at my bets it seems the better results come at 3/1 and below though that is admittedly only from a small sample.
Anyway here goes for today: 2.25 Newton Abbot - Bathiva 6.00 Wolves - Say it Simple 7.00 Wolves- Capla Berry 8.30 Wolves - Badessa . Good shape to this market but the horse is unraced. 3.25 Listowel - Riven Light They will all be played ew to small stakes. 2.20 Listowel has the shape but the second fav is over 3/1 so I’ll pass. You know what will happen. |
|
By:
Just two races stand out for me today the 4-00@ Newton.... Where King Alfonso must go well, and the 6-00 @Wolves where Say It Simple can turn over the highly touted newcomer..

Hi John/Skip et al
It looked like a bumper day (at first glance last night) with lots of potentially "nice shaped" races. So many, that it's actually taken me much longer than usual to work through them all. Now that I have - I think that for one reason or another (NR, Seller, Claimer, Irish, too many "lurkers" etc) I have pretty much ruled them all out as ew single bets bar one race! (I looked at the 14:20, 14:25, 15:25, 16:00, 18:00, 19:00, 20:00 and 20:30)! Although I usually pass if I have to look too hard (selections should leap off the page imo) - I still want to look at that one race at Wolverhampton in more depth (replays etc) - but in summary this afternoon would all feel a bit too speculative or "manufactured" for any ew singles for me. I will post again if the one at Wolves later is a "goer" (imo) as an ew single. GL all. |

Sitting on hands is sooooo hard with races like 14:20 Listowel! - If it weren't Listowel, I would really like to oppose this favourite (Jungle Cove) with an each way selection against it. It has the profile of a horse I would lay (if I were a layer). Although if it keeps drifting it might become the ew selection itself!!!
I actually kind of hope it bolts up to make me feel foolish (for knocking its profile) - as that would be preferable to sitting on my hands and watching the 2nd or 3rd Fav win the race! You can't win with this very selective outlook - but to be fair, you can't lose either! ![]() |
|
By:
Happy with that - short priced fav (with horrid profile imo) out of the frame - but I wouldn't never have bet the winner EW unless I was given 3 or 4 picks, so it doesn't feel too much like a missed opportunity either. Bum back on hands! [bored face]

Yes, put up a big write up for this horse the other day but was a NR, look back a few days you'll find it, have hoisted it 13lbs but after Tribal Path nearly won earlier, i'll be really disappointed if doesn't win, place just a saver.

Well ditched sttlm - I struggle to play with any confidence in claimers and sellers - I always take a keen interest in first time headgear in that type of (low grade) race though. There were two dodge-pots (imo) plus the Pipe horse all running in first time (assorted) headgear. Vancouver and Foxy Act possibly ran interesting races and (arguably) improved for it. Very sad that the Pipe horse didn't come back.
