In all seriousness the ONLY firm I have a problem with in Chester is the BetBald shop in Foregate Street, staff way to on the ball there...... The rest don't seem to give a monkeys, and just take anything... As long as you don't take the p#ss...

'Bad each-way race'. What a ridiculous term. It's either an each-way race or not.

What's the point of having terms when you can make them up as you go along?

Bookmakers not too bothered if punters waste their money in 'bad each-way races' for punters. Yes sir, here's your money back you must have been an absolute mug to bet in that race.

Long term, betting ew is not a sound strategy.
Using same total stake, win only is far more profitable.

nonsense, there are races (tho not as many as there used to be) where the bookies EW terms are hugely profitable.

Correct the ONLY races you should be looking to bet in today are the 3-30 Catterick and the 4-15 Lingfield.... Just case of watching the market..

Each Way betting is the worst value out there why do the books try to alienate the punters that regularly choose to bet ew.

You should only bet each way VERY selectively, and then concentrate horses at the front of the market in totally uncompetitive races....... There no shame in backing a 6/4 each way, i do it all the time...

that is a particularly good angle as it seems to the uninitiated to be a mug bet, if possible get in the line "I just want to get something back".

Correct the Each Way value in most "bad" each way race is almost always the favourite....

"the Each Way value in most "bad" each way race is almost always the favourite"

I am assuming that's sarcasm or I am completely missing the point....

Each Way betting is the worst value out there

as skip states not if you are betting selectively in the bad e/w races where place is heavily overbroke.

You are guaranteed to win money whatever the outcome if you know what you are doing.

Hi Skip - respect for posting your selections in advance!

It amazes me that there isn't more discussion on here about "filthy" each-way betting and also that there isn't a long-running selections/discussion thread about it. Today was potentially a bumper day for some ew value, some singles and (my favoured ew multiples) but it hasn't really transpired imo.

We have odds on favs in the 14:10, 14:30 and 17:35 - but I only like to bet the ew singles when I have a very, very strong view about them placing (unplaced selections must be avoided at all cost!), so my feelings aren't strong enough about the 14:30 (not enough to go on) or the 14:10 (where Punchbowl Flyer was at least a bit of a tempter).

I might have chanced some singles and some cheeky little ew multiples but the dead 8 runners in all 3 of those races is also holding me back.

I will have an e-way single in the 17:35 - (same selection as you) provided all 8 run, so I will give that a swerve until the latest possible moment but I will be on Caswell Bay ew in a few shops later - if all 8 do still look like going to post!

The 15:00 and the 15:30 looked to have some potential as ew races but they're not clear cut enough for me. Discretion is the better part of valour imo!

I very rarely do the Irish meetings, so what looked like a potentially bumper day of filthy each-way action results in just one solitary ew single bet!

Good luck with your selections (especially in the 17:35!).

I'll ask the question.

Assume your usual stake on a horse is £100 to win

If backing ew , do you bet £50 ew , or £100 ew ?

Can't remember the last time I backed a horse win only.....the inefficiency of the place market is the only advantage us punters have....

Mathematically very difficult as the value will probably be in the place bet, but you are restricted to the same amount as the win bet which will usually be a losing bet, so eg kelly staking doesn't work well.

Probably best to look at "bad ew races" as a class in their own.  My guess would be that £100ew on a £2000 bankroll for a 5-1 shot (assuming the place bet is 10% roi) would be ok, a bit more for shorter odds.

My bets centre around average odds of 6/1 / 7/1.
Each year my data shows that win only betting pays more in the long run than ew betting.

Taking my earlier example of £100 stake. Is this £50 ew or £100 ew. ?
With the sp/ odds quoted  assuming one achieves a 25% win/selection ration. A win only bet will always achieve the greater profit.
Whether  that be £100 win ( not £50ew) or £200 win ( not £100 ew)

If a horse is placed only , you lose the win bet, if it wins , you could have had twice the stake on the win odds.
Of course the selection has to win, but versus either half the stake on, or double the stake. Over a sequence of bets, the stake invested in win only, returns more profit than betting ew.

the art of each way betting is only betting when the betfair place sp is less than books place payout and the betfair win sp isn't a lot bigger than the books win sp.

They used to be easy to find, but aren't that common now.

Clearly betting each way as a general strategy is poor.

The old EW Bet is next to useless because of the level stakes. Far better to choose your percentage stake win and place on the exchange.

Same selection here Skip (Mojave is my only filthy ew bet of the day) - disappointed to have to take (mostly) 11/4 in various shops, as it's been drifting all day on here!

Slightly disappointed with yesterday, despite my solitary ew bet being a solid winner (mostly at 9/4) - All 3 odds-on races that I mentioned saw the favs turned over at odds-on (in the 14:10, 14:30 and the 17:35) and all with the dead 8 runners actually making it to post! Plus all 3 races were won by the filthy each way option!!!

Instead of "discretion is the better part of valour" - I should have gone with my younger (and less wise) approach - "seize the day". Gutted to have not done more singles and the cheeky treble at early prices of approx 11/2, 6/1 and 9/4 (approx 147/1 for the treble)- but it would probably have have seen me lose a few more shops - and the slow drip fills the bucket!

Very well done Skip.

I think you have a more cavalier (braver) approach than me - but you are racking up the winners.

At an early glance tomorrow looks grim (to me) with just Escape Proof in the 17:30 at Leicester (Charlton/McNamara again) as a current possible. I can identify my potential selections in a matter of minutes (I expect you can too) but I like to have a good study of the selected race beyond the obvious and whittle a few out or sometimes add one in, so it's good to talk with like minded people.

Keep them coming.

EW betting in handicaps with the exception of the big money ones should be avoided at all costs. How many riders are told to finish as close as possible if they cant win as the horse could go up in the ratings for peanuts prize money.
By:

When: 22 Aug 19 09:01
And how many riders do the same in maidens and novice races with a future handicap in mind.

That's why you should concentrate on the market leaders..
By:

When: 22 Aug 19 14:26
Escape Proof was my only potential interest today (17:30 Leicester) but it's not an ew bet for me today.

A combination of it being too short in price (backed from 15/8 to 6/4 already in the shops, nothing to put it into an ew multiple with and I very rarely go shorter than 2/1 in ew singles), plus the number of runners (currently 18) is too many for my liking with a few FTO or once/twice raced with potential to improve from stables I respect.

Would likely still have a pop ew if it drifted to 3/1 ish in the pre-race betting but not going to trek out to hang around any shops this afternoon in what would be more of a hope than an expectation - at the moment it looks just as likely to go off favourite as it is to drift to a backable price! There will be better opportunities, at better prices and with higher levels of confidence.

lol Market moves now quite extreme in the 17:30! Having been backed into 2.50, Escape Proof is now back out to the original 3.70 however the shops will be cautious and slow to reflect that reversion in price (7/4 is till the best available). Will swerve this race for sure.

When: 22 Aug 19 18:14
Escape Proof wins nicely (17:30 Leicester) - traded it for some buttons on here in the win, place and ew markets but did not bet it properly (ew in the shops). Cry

There doesn't seem to be much interest in this type of betting on this forum (which still absolutely amazes me) but I might start a thread for "each way thieves" on the General Betting Forum (to keep it near the top) in the coming days if anybody is interested in discussing selections and/or rationale.
By:

When: 22 Aug 19 18:59
Tomorrow looks potentially very interesting - amongst other possible races there are 3 races with (currently!) 8 runners and an odds on fav. The 14:05 at Newmarket, 17:35 at Goodwood and the 17:50 at Salisbury.

I will be amazed if they all have 8 runners (especially in the 17:35 Goodwood!) but it looks like it could be a day of action with a few other races also looking likely to throw up each way selections.
