Yes Madhu - i do - almost 99% impossible but still possible in my view ...without being an insider of course and having any proper information.
Whereas i see Found and the ones i mentioned as having zero chance - its how i see the race and runners who turn up there - im not talking about horses ability here ...im talking about the possibility of them winning an arc when i take all of my past experiences of the race. I've been studying the arc for years - its my favorite race of all races and ive learnt much in my time Been to the Arc 9 times and starting off in 2001 when i seen Dettori win on Sakhee ...it was this day that got me hooked on the race and atmosphere of longchamp. Its all about belief and convictions in this game - and people may think im mad but i give a better chance to the Great Gatsby than i do to Found. |

13/2 looks quite big now on the Japanese horse - drift probably being solely on the base of its draw.
hmmm , ew price now for punters who fancy him - draw wont mean nothing at Chantilly. |

on another horse - Youmzain - never good enough to win an arc but still getting in the money in 3 consecutive Arcs up to when he was 6 years old - funny old race eh ! 66/1 , 12/1 , 20/1 |

i was talking about the class and prestige that one expects of an Arc.
You keep using the word "Great" which doesn't mean nothing when looking for possible winners It was you who mentioned class and prestige. I mentioned 'great' to fit in with your terms. Maybe you meant run of the mill horses are what's expect of a race with class and prestige? Actually I've no idea what you're talking about. The best ive seen is Danedream and i think that in that Spring,Summer,Autumn in 2011 she would have beaten anything in the world if targeted for the race these are the runners who could possibly turn out to be in that bracket with this years Arc - Postponed, Harzand , Makahiki , Order Of St George. Putting OOSG possibly in the same bracket as Danedream (the best you've seen) Followed by this In my opinion Order Of St George COULD be an arc winner but its unlikely ![]() Whereas i see Found and the ones i mentioned as having zero chance A 6/1 shot has a zero chance. ![]() |

haa, patience is wearing thin with you Figgis., lol , i dont want to fall out with you and dont want to be offensive - have a sleep and read up again in the morning.
CLASS AND PRESTIGE - RACE, RACE, RACE, RACE, RACE You are correct in that you dont understand ...or probably more accurately you dont want to understand what im saying from my point of view because it indirectly knocks yours. You are at this time suffering from a bit of scotama , You quote everything thing i state then flip it or turn into something else to create a pre-cursor for you to reply to someone who is indirectly implying that your ideas are wrong just by their own ideas and opinions. be cool and be open to understanding other opinions - yes i see a 6/1 shot as having no chance spot on 100% correct. I see a 6/1 shot as having a ZERO chance of winning the race , it may come 2nd , it may come 3rd , nut in my book i see it having no chance of winning. If i was in the bookmaking business and i was a layer i would lay the 6/1 all day. |

We won't as we aren't friends. And you couldn't offend me. CLASS AND PRESTIGE - RACE, RACE, RACE, RACE, RACE You are correct in that you dont understand ...or probably more accurately you dont want to understand what im saying from my point of view because it indirectly knocks yours. No, it just makes no sense outside of your head. If i was in the bookmaking business and i was a layer i would lay the 6/1 all day As a bookmaker who believes any horse has zero chance you wouldn't last a day. Its all about belief and convictions in this game Well all I've heard so far is a lot of ifs and maybes, how about putting a bet forward? |

Very good read with plenty of decent opinions. It's a wide open year and there's plenty of precedents from history supporting several runners' claims. Supporters of Left Hand will point to Treve. Supporters of Order of St George will highlight Marienbard. Supporters of Makahiki will use the performances of Orfevre, Nakayama Festa, Deep Impact as evidence of class and throw in the notion that a French jockey can make the difference to deliver a win for Japan. Supporters of HArzand will point to Workforce that it can be done.
Postponed doesn't set the pulse racing BUT I just wonder if he is becoming unappreciated. He is the best of the older generation horses. Found, Highland Reel, New Bay look limited Group 1 horses in the 120-122 range. He's a deserving favourite though whether he should be as short as he is is debatable. But this is 2016 where bookies can clip a horse like Altior into 3/1 favourite for the Arkle on the back on confirmation rather then actual evidence on the track! The only two horses in my mind that can challenge him are the two CLassic colts, Makahiki and Harzand. Makahiki has mystique and nobody knows how good he really is. 70-80% fit in the Prix Niel apparently, he probably ran to around 115 that day winning cosily. It's not hard to envision him coming on for that and given he could've had any amount in hand, he's a strong contender. Harzand's Derby form hasn't looked clever but I think there is so little to go on, we can still label him a scopey type. Our notion of Harzand is that he's a strong staying type who likes soft ground. That isn't in doubt. But are we actually 100% sure that is all he is? In the Irish Derby I thought he showed good tactical speed that allowed him to go where he needed to be. His Irish Champion Stakes run wasn't great but apparently readily excused as having been struck into during the race. He wasn't beaten that far in any case with Pat Smullen going easy in the final furlong. For me, it was clear that excuse was a valid one as he was being pushed along well before the home straight. He jumped out well and settled until it looks as if he was bumped into from behind. From that point he was being pushed along. He moved just fine on quicker ground and a glance at his overall pedigree suggest there is more to Harzand then simply the notion he is a plodder and soft ground horse. A DI of 1.40 out of a Xaar mare gives hope there is more to Harzand than we have actually seen. He has the draw with his pacemaker on his inside. He has the tactical speed to jump out handily and I can see a similar run to his Irish Derby win racing in the top 6 horses then making his move just before the home straight. 8/1 is more then fair as is PP's 7/1 quote for 4 places. GL all! Thanks to all who contributed, even those who bickered like schoolkids! |

as stated earlier..underwhelmed by the turnout for such a great race
nonetheless one has to have an 'interest' just feel Postponed is beatable few bob on Makahiki 13/2...Harzand(who i've never really rated fwiw)8/1...Left Hand 22/1(overpriced imho) not particularly bullish..more to do with the 3yo 'thang' |

I was just about to say I wouldn't be surprised if this 'good' is more like good to firm. We should get an idea from the times today but unfortunately the first race is over 15f and the fourth race is 2 1/2m+, there's a decent chance the fillies race won't have much pace so hopefully the Prix Dollar and DW will be run at a true pace and be more revealing.

I will decide on the winner later tonight (tough week at work).
My thoughts in the immediate aftermath of Epsom was that that Harzand had run a very decent Arc Trial. His stamina, courage and heart were further enhanced when he fended off Idaho in the Irish equivalent. More than happy to right off the Irish Champion because he was in world of trouble very early in the race and we've been given a legit excuse i.e. struck into and sustained a cut. Obvious issues is his recovery from this (supposedly went well) and the faster ground...he is decent old price though. I wouldn't have thought Dual Epsom & Irish Derby winners would normally be so high a price in a race of this quality. I think he should command a little more respect. All the other contenders have been well talked about above...especially Left Hand and Silverware so don't really want to bore people by writing about their chances anymore. I'm quite intrigued by Makahiki and I just wonder with no stand out classy European horse at the peak of their powers if this will be the year for Japan. Having StarCraft on board instead of a Japanese jockey is a major plus and I thought he won the Neil easily enough and looked well in his gallops since. I think he might be coming into his own now. - If I could just suggest one ruffie then it would be Migwar. Sea the Stars out of an unraced sister to Rule of Law, handles better ground, form not to shabby, improving figures this season culminating a win and beating of Meandro last time out. Suspect Freddy Heady has targeted this race...could've easily gone for something easier but keeping him in vs the top dogs. Olivier Peslier on board. Can see him dropping Migwar out and then bringing him through past beaten horses for a fast finishing 3rd. worthy of £2 win & place on here. - |

Difficult with so many slowly run races today and contrary to what I though the fillies race turned out a decent time. I'd say it's bang on good ground and that's exactly how it looked.

Postponed is the top -rated horse but there is only 4lb between the toprated and the 7th top. How Postponed can be seen as value at 2/1 or thereabouts is beyond me especially as he is a 5 yr old. There are good reasons why older horses don't do so well as 3yr olds which relate to the WFA scale and the lack of relative improvement compared to younger horses. At the age of 3 , Postponed would not have won a Derby or even any G1 race. He is a late maturer who hit the big time with his KG win last year.He was trained to peak in March for Meydan and after the Coronation Cup he was peaked for the KG again but he didn't make it after a setback. Was his run at York worth another rating of 126? I don;t think so. In fact believe he has been well placed to win without showing improvement. I do not expect him to improve tomorrow. I will be taking him on.
For me, the 2 horses who have the potential to improve past him are Harzand (just 2lb behind) and Mikihaki (only 3 lb behind) and I hope to see these 2 fight out the finish. The prices crrently available for both are very generous and imo represent value at 3/1 dutched. |

Sandown you talk a good game with this five year old theory but I get the impression you are concerned Postponed is going to bust it.

Who knows whether he will or not? I certainly don't. I try and deal only with probabilities and prices. Only a fool believes he knows who will win. At the prices Postponed is a lay and not a back play for me. If he wins, one result alters nothing as far as the case against older horses is concerned. They have a lot of ground to make up.I don't know whether either Harzand or Makahiki will win. I rate their combined chance of doing so much better than that of Postponed and at the prices they are a play. That's all I can say. I've been playing this game for 40 years and you don't survive very long if you won't understand what I'm on about.Bookmakers have their over-rounds, we have judgement, probabilities and value. |

Really gutted that i cant have a proper bet in this years race - it would be silly of me to risk any part of my bank on the race as there are just too many questions and variables that are in my view not quantifiable.
Will be interesting to keep an eye on the French Pari Mutual Prices - its possible that Japanese horse could go as low as evens or even possibly odds on their equivalent to the English Tote ....like Deep Impact did many years ago. If i had a £500 free bet then id put £300 win on the fav at 2/1 , and 2 other crazy flyer £50 ew bets on Talismanic 40/1 and Order Of St George at 20/1 - and i wouldn't even be confident in any of those bets. Good luck tomorrow everyone - hope you all enjoy all of the Group 1's throughout the day and manage to get a return on your bets. Au Revoir ![]() |

You use this five year old theory to back up your argument which is fair enough, but how many five year olds that have run in the Arc have gone into the race with his sort of profile? Plus the three year old crop this year looks very bad. Although again that's just my subjective analysis ![]() |

RP says Vedivani will run in the same silks as Makahiki today :o
Is this a Typo? It's in the Makahiki section...like the last paragraph. Thought he was Harzand's pacemaker...didn't know the J aps purchased him to do a pacemaking job. |
|
By:
Btw...wouldn't surprise me if it's a typo...read though the paper front to the back and spotting mistakes all over the place.
And good god....i know they go for cheesy front pages but Postponed and the Raiders of the Lost Arc? That's not cheesy....just boing....woooo raiders of the lost arc....wow...seriously. ....my fav of all time was back in the day with that old rogue TheRealBandit and picture of Martin Pipe as a Mexican bandit with the headline - welcome to bandit country. Quite apt.... |

Will be backing Makahiki win and place...4 place option on here is good.
Just worried if Harzand will be fast enough to take this....I remember earlier in the season after he won his trial and Smullen was asked about his future prospects he said he would be perfect for the St Leger...plus there has to be element of him just outstaying USAR and Idaho rather than beating them for speed. Makahiki will do for me...seems to save a fair bit up his sleeve for that final challenge and I quite like having a Lemaire on board....the Japanese jockeys have proved way too costly on their European raids. Got a feeling the race will be set up for a fast closer in the final furlong rather than someone like Postponed or Harzand who will try and take up between the 3 and 2 pole....Makahiki can be the one. |
|
By:
Having done my dough ante-post on the unwilling and deceptive Zarak I am now scratching my head thinking what will finish behind Postponed. For intents and purposes he looks the winner, but not worthy of a bet at 2/1. Quite literally, just because it's the Arc, I've had another bet and backed Makahiki eachway with smaller stakes on Left Hand & The Grey Gatsby but it feels like a guess up.
|
|
By:
There is not much difference on the pmu between Postponed and Makahiki and with the yen flying around later, it's not difficult to envisage Makahiki going off fav. Le Paris Turf is forcasting Postponed to be about a 9/2 chance.
Postponed is my idea of the winner..a lot has been said of 5yos, but he has been relatively lightly raced since last years Hardwicke. He's only raced 4 times since last years arc meeting and with the exception of the Hardwicke ( widely regarded as given a poor ride ) , he is unbeaten over 11f or more. Maybe, sometimes some races are quite obvious to call and to me this looks 1 of them. Savoir Vivre deserves a second glance for each way purposes. Can't think of many German trained that run in the arc at 3, they usually give them time to mature and are rarely seen outside of Germany at 3. The trainer sounds quietly confident, but his race pattern is noticeable to me. Despite finishing a close second in the German derby, he seems to run best when fresh. A 5 week break from deauville looks ideal to him. |

No overnight rain at Chantilly and the going is Good (3.1 on the penetrometer from 3.2 yesterday).
After backing Makahiki a couple of months ago ground conditions was my biggest worry but it has worked out pretty good for a change. All up to the horse and Lemaire now, hopefully a good pace and a clean race for all. Had a small EW bet on Silgan's Saga at 100-1 (4 places), I think that price is a tad insulting. Backed her a few times over the last couple of years... why stop now?! ![]() Good luck with your bets today. |

May the best horse or horse with the most potential win the 'Arc' today. Also, good luck to all 'Found' backers!

According to the atr Sunday forum they had a bit of rain after racing yesterday.
Ground my be on the dead side of Gd if reports are right?? The early race times & reports will tell us more. Can't go against Postponed myself, having followed him all year. Price is not great to win an Arc 2s, but everything looks set for a mighty run from him, he's the best horse in the race in my book, so hopefully he gets a Gd trip all the way round & will take all the beating. Like Found & Harzand for the places. Q- has AOB not missed a trick here by not letting Seventh Heaven take her chance??? she's the best 3yo mile & a half filly in Europe imo. |

how many five year olds that have run in the Arc have gone into the race with his sort of profile? Treve just last year for example? Went off 2.2 noone can give a definitive answer at this stage to whether Postponed is value or not. It's just subjective opinion. Not true. I can give a definite answer at this stage. All forerecasting/probability assessments of any type (economics, weather, politics, military planning, business etc) relies on a mixture of data of all descriptions, analysis, observation, experience, judgement. To call it just subjective opinion is to misunderstand what is involved. What is true, is that other people can and do interpret things differently which is why you will find backers of Postponed at the price. What matters is how your P&L looks at the end of the year, not today. |
