The likes of Frankel, New Approach, Rip Van Winkle and Magician all have more speed on the dam's side than Australia.

only just caught up with ATR showing this gallop and Aidan's comments.
Going on what he said, Australia ought to be Evens fav for the Guineas and 1/2 for Derby. Going on what I saw with my eyes, should be 25/1 for the Guineas Presumably none of O'Brien's horses have been asked to do any fast work this season? With his racecourse form still below Group 1 level, presumably this week's gamble on Australia is based entirely on Aidan's view of the horse's promise and homework as a 2yo as it can't be anything he has seen at 3? Absolutely amazed that Aidan has put himself in this position (again) of proclaiming yet another "best ever" great champion before he has proven it on the racecourse, especially when he's also saying the horse can't handle soft ground. Always love to see a great racehorse and best of luck to Australia, but until he proves himself on the track, Aidan's words are just more spin to add to Sandown's (?) long list of previous Coolmore marketing spiel |

Roderic O'Connor another Galileo again with speed on the dam's side.

If this episode tells me anything, it is that analysing the form of a horse and predicting its chance is more reliable than that of predicting a trainers intentions - at least with this particular trainer/connections. Perhaps the prospect of winning the Triple Crown has become a desirable goal after the near-miss with Camelot.
By:
"Wouldn't anybody want to win the Triple Crown?" said the Coolmore founder John Magnier, a stakeholder in Camelot, when asked about the prospect. "We are all so old now that these things get to mean more as you get older. If you asked me 30 years ago, I'd have looked the other way."
that's what Magnier said before Camelot went to the leger |

now into a best available 9/4 on here although was a nice 5/2 available with the sportsbook for a bit this morning. Looks like War Command is headed for an alternative arrangement according to the money available today although could just be speculative trading.

Is Australia the ultimate talking horse? He is now just over 2/1 for both the 2000 Gns and the Derby all really on the back of the trainer's comments. He has won a G3 race, on his third outing. He is yet to race as a 3 yr old. The ratings certainly don't justify this position so everything is based on his potential. He will imo improve for a step up in trip and his action doesn't suggest that he needs soft ground, perhaps the opposite. This is an insiders horse par excellance. The trainer doesn't seem to be able to stop himself from using ever increasing hyperbole. Let's face it, they should give Australia the prize now. There is no point in running the races, its so one-sided.

By:
my 25/1 quote for Australia absolute rubbish as was looking at wrong horse....
Maybe Aidan is trying to do a "Mullins" in eulogising about his horse and trying to frighten off all the opposition? |
By:
Well he is doing a pretty good job of reducing the opposition on his own.
What a mug he would look if War Command turned up and trounced his superstar. Trainer has talked himself into a corner to the detriment of competition. |
By:
Ah yes of course, how can I forget Frankel, and New Approach.
By:
Anyway, i've layed him at 3.25. Ridiculous price.
By:
Outstrip big on here @140+
won't be that big if he runs, will he? Just had a few quid.Backed Be Ready also. GL ALL |
By:
just layed some more at 3.15. Nonsense of a price.
By:
same laid the amount at 3.15 which was taken earlier. was a significant arbitrage to bookie prices earlier on today.
By:
He is very short and it's not a price that would interest me ante post but I wouldn't want to lay it. Much has been made of his first two runs not being impressive, and I agree, but George Washington wasn't impressive until his fourth start as a 2yo, so I wouldn't hold that against him. Camelot went off a short priced 15/8 on the day, is Australia's form much worse than Camelot's going into the race? Ok Camelot had a Gp1 win to his credit but beating Zip Top and Fencing, albeit impressively, was hardly great form. If the other 2 horses I rate highly, Be Ready and Toormore, get to the race in form I think Australia is going to have to do a bit more than Camelot had to in order to win. The danger is that those two horses aren't guaranteed yet and if they were to miss the race I don't think it would take a great deal of winning, unless something else makes big improvement.

Fencing had won a Listed race at Newbury before racing in the RP Trophy and at the time looked ''potentially'' decent. I think the same could be said for Free Eagle, but there is no way he was at his best behind Australia last time out. Pat Smullen was easy on him in the straight as if to say he knew something was amiss. He is also being given a Derby campaign so in the context of a Guineas race i'm not sure if the form is worth much?
Lat Hawill, Kingman and Night of Thunder are all promising in their own right and will line up in the Greenham Stakes. The race could easily throw up a live challenger. |

3.10 now ...

After discussing Toormore with his owners and The Hannons we have agreed that we will target him towards The Craven before the Guineas. |
By:
He is very short and it's not a price that would interest me ante post but I wouldn't want to lay it
what's the lowest price you would back Australia antepost, Figgis? |
By:
Yes Fencing had won a Listed race but Zip Top finishing ahead of him wasn't much of a boost to the form. Have to say I view the Craven plan as a slight negative. I don't see what is to be gained running there with a penalty and can only assume he's going to be in much need of a run to get him fit.
By:
Yep, I see it as a slight negative too, though I am lukewarm on his chances anyway. Prefer others ahead of him.
Hannon does like his Guineas horses to have a prep. I think he has had several make the fram after preps, Canford, Dick Turpin, Van Der neer, Trumpet Major was 4th, plus some others in the 90's before my betting days! |
By:
Ped, I'm not interested in backing him at all ante post, as far as I'm concerned I've missed the boat on that score, although in truth I wouldn't have even stepped in at the 6/1 I recall him being at the end of last year, that just isn't my kind of ante post price. If he does make the race I'll probably just back him to cover some of my outlay on Be Ready and Toormore, nothing more than that.
By:
Figgis, if you wouldn't have backed Australia at 6/1 three months ago, surely with nothing having changed as far as the principals concerned bar Kingman apparently having overcome his chip and War Command (who you don't rate) being left at home, would you not have to be a layer at 2/1 now - if laying is your sort of thing (which I presume it is it not)
By:
Ped, I'm just rarely interested in taking less than a double figure price ante post for the classics. The big difference now is that we know Australia is definitely being aimed at the race, they might've taken a Derby trial route, and all seems well with him. I see it as potentially a 3 horse race, that's not to say nothing else can win, but in most years I would expect the winner to come from the 3 I've rated on those kind of marks. One of the trials may throw up another contender, but more often than not recently they've revealed hardly anything we didn't already know. It's possible the other two I rate won't make the race, won't run to form even if they do, or that I've overrated them. I really don't much care for anything else in the race so in those circumstances laying Australia, even at a short price, makes no appeal.
By:
So you wouldn't lay Australia at Evens which it might be this week at the current rate on the graph... ?
By:
Ped, I'm not a trader, very occasionally I might trade out of a bet, or scale it down, if I change my mind or circumstances change but I don't look to trade. If I did operate that way then I probably would lay him at evens as it would be surprising to me if he started as short as that on the day. Personally I don't believe he will ever go as low as evens on here anyway. As I said, if the race is up to scratch, and it might not be on the day, I see him as 1 of only 3 potential winners so I'm not interested in laying him. Some people might operate on the basis that every horse has a price, the same horse might be a back or a lay for them depending on the price and I know that works in theory and may work for them in practice. That's not the way I usually operate, I'm not interested in getting a load of runners in a book and don't want to increase my liabilities by laying 1 of only 3 runners I fancy.
By:
I should add, if he does go as low as evens then I certainly won't be having any cover on him, however, I still won't be laying him. If anything around 2/1 is available nearer the time I will probably have some cover.
By:
Ped, I'm looking at it from my current position. If I didn't already have decent bets on the other two and they were now too short for me to want to back then I'd be laying Australia at evens as that would be my only liability.
By:
Australia backer will be hoping for no "April showers" then
![]() Silly ante-p price now ![]() |
By:
if I'd backed Australia at 5/1+, would be laying off everything at the current price of 2/1.
Antepost backers in a very strong position. Though don't think there can be many of them as relatively little been laid back on here |
By:
I think we've been lucky to have some good winning Guineas performances in recent years which leads to the expectation of another, but we could end up with a Haafhd, Refuse to Bend, Island Sands, or, dare I say it, Camelot type running, it's not always apparent at this stage.
By:
It looks more than a 3 horse race to me. Only 6 weeks ago is was 5/1 the field. Nothing has changed since in that time, with the exception of War Command possibly going to France.
By:
I must admit to being completely wrong-footed over the "WC to France" move, and no doubt it was that knowledge which insiders used to back Australia in over the past few weeks, that plus the AOB view of " 2nd best horse ever - and that before its even won a single G1!
I had thought that Ballydoyle might run both at Newmarket just as they did with Hawk Wing & Rock of Gibralter. I also counted on them going the traditional route for Derby preps i.e Leopardstown & 10f, for Australia. In other words, WC was a cert for Newmarket. So, why the change in thinking? The lure of the Triple Crown? Something new rather than a repeat, perhaps.A greater challenge. Whatever, the A/P prices are unrealistic to say the least, not just the Gns but for the Derby as well.I will always price up the whole field for major races and over the years I reckon I have become pretty good at it. To accept the current prices, you first have to have Australia as the most likely winner, the favourite. Even that is debateable. Then you have to have the other contenders having no more than half the chance of Australia at best. How can that right? The market is built around trainers comments which is not a reliable basis. But one comment should be a red flaf for Australia fans. The horse will not be at its best on soft ground. We have just experienced the wettest winter in decades. Any more rain would be a concern. However, the word "firm" has appeared in the going description for Nmkt in early May, many times before. As a betting race, the opportunities lie with others now with Australia perhaps being a "saver" on the day. |

Last year, I took a very strong view against Dawn Approach for the Derby at the very short A/P prices. To my mind, although it had the best form there was a huge uncertainty over its ability to stay 12f.Laying it heavily formed the basis of my A/P book.
To my mind, Australia is currently a strong lay for the 2000 Gns at the current 3.05/3.15. 1. Its form doesn't justify it even being favourite, let alone 3.05. Its price is based on trainers comments & hype. 2. It is bred to be a 12f horse so may not be at its best at 8f even if it is as good as its trainer says. 3. It will not want soft ground which is possible given the recent weather patterns. 4. It still has to get to the race. 5. It will almost certainly not have a prep which means there will be no more information to be has other than gallops news. 6. There are plenty of alternatives with good chances. 7. Worse case scenario - it might go shorter on the day - so you might have to accept a loss or let it run. How short might it go? 2.5 , 2.0. The latter price would give you a 52% loss on stakes if trading out pre-race , the former a 26% loss. If it goes off at 3.5 or bigger it gives a 39% plus profit. If it doesn't run, you have bet to nothing.Letting it run and you still have the field against it. |

War Command two best runs have come on straight tracks (Coventry and Dewhurst). I think taking him to France (if they do!!) would be asking for trouble imo.
The way I see it is that as War Command was a top 2 year old (should have been top rated imo) who has won the Dewhurst (which is traditionally the best Guineas trial) by then routing him to France it's just a backhanded way of increasing the hype on Australia. i.e you can see the headlines in the breeding catalogue if Australia manages to win. eg. 'Coolmore were so confident in Australias brilliance that they switched the previous seasons Dewhurst winner, who would normally line up as one of the favourites at Newmarket, to the French guineas at Longchamp'. |
By:
Can anyone list all AOB's Dewhurst winners? Or even all his runners..
By:
And btw, it's only AOB's word re the ground, too, not just on his ability. Lots of Galileo's handle cut in the ground, some even excel on soft ground. But I can understand them being protective of the horse about the issue of ground given they feel the Irish Derby bottomed Camelot.

good summaries, Sandown. The market running in fear of the trainers comments, not the horse's form. Trained by anyone else, Australia would be a 10/1+ chance.
Fair enough the trainer has had some fantastic horses to compare with ..... but it was your list, wasn't it, that pointed out all the O'Brien hype merchants that have bitten the dist before? On speed figures, even ignoring War Command, Australia only rates 5th best of the top 10 left in the market. Amazing that this horse could go off Evens at Newmarket at this rate with as you say, no further evidence of his ability shown on the racecourse.... despite Brigust's protestations that O'Brien would never repeat previous "mistakes" of not sending his Guineas hope to Newmarket without a trial |
