Why won't they settle Arizona? Trump effectively admitted it was lost tonight in press conference. Result not disputed.

Well yeah I would if:

a) that's what you've done every other year
b) it's the Associated Press
c) there is a tradition within US elections that the media projects the winner
d) this tradition has been going on since 1848
e) everyone knows what "projected winner" means in the context of the US election

Is that what you think a decision desk is? No wonder you're wrong about this because you have totally misunderstood the process. It's not Tucker Carlson sitting there going "ah, go on then, we'll give that to Biden". A decision desk is made up of vastly experienced and capable statisticians who have intricate local and national knowledge of elections and voting and they only predict a state when they are 100% sure.

It couldn't be further from "some hack" and your lack of insight on this aspect of calling elections, while also purporting to understand the rules, is frankly embarrassing.

https://www.ap.org/en-us/topics/politics/elections/how-we-call-races - try reading this and maybe you might have a better idea of what goes into projecting the results.

Why would I ask a question when I already think I know the answer?

They are being cautious and sensible. The exchange is not a bookmaker. They are not the counterparty. They will not payout on someone else's behalf if they make a judgement there is a risk they will have to reverse it and be out of pocket.

If the situation was reversed I doubt the bookies would payout on Trump so fast given most of the money was on Trump. If bookies have paid out it is risk they are willing to take as there are probably very few Biden backers.

Cecil, the press can do their speculation as much as they like but in close/dispute elections they cannot be trusted. Look how wrong their projections were in 2000. Given the question marks over this election and the unprecedented situation with postal votes Betfair are being prudent to wait.

How do those on here, that suggest Betfair should settle the 2020 US Election on media projections alone, believe they should have handled the 2000 US Presidential Election and the Florida projections?

The Networks first called/projected Florida for Gore and then for GW Bush; neither of these projections should have been made at the time they were made. If the other states had all went the way they ultimately did and had been been safely called at the time of the Florida projections, should Betfair have settled on the first Florida call, the second call or neither?

Re the inauguration: Whilst I of course expect the market to be made void, as Trump will be inaugurated for his 2nd term, to demonstrate my faith in the great man, I've gone for a max bet (although I may not have done so if the maximum stake they accepted had been much more than £15.40). Clearly the odds compilers and most punters (money) expect otherwise.

Please read the link I provided. The Associated Press is not "the press". They do not call races if not certain and did not call Florida and do not call races unless their EXPERTS are sure. The certainly do not "speculate". They have been calling these results since 1848 and have never incorrectly called a State.

Well Betfair have some discretion of course, they're not going to just instantly settle a swing state like Florida because it's called, they'd give that call a little time to breath, particularly when it was clear it was close.

Associated Press never called that race and the networks have also learned from this and are definitely more cautious now. It's not the same though, because that was one very close state. And it was 20 years ago.

There is no doubt about this result.

Sergeant Cecil,

I agree with much of your 11.28 post. However, it could be argued that Betfair are currently doing what you suggest - 'giving the call a little time to breathe'. I also agree that the AP and the Networks are rightly considerably more cautious in making calls now than they were 20 years ago; although the Fox call of Arizona was made a little early, in my opinion.

I believe that you're mistaken regarding the AP not calling Florida in 2000. I have found numerous sources that suggest they did call it early for Gore, including the following:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/aponline/20001108/aponline183922_000.htm

Betfair settle North Carolina. They are only paying out on states Trump wins.
By:

Dave,

time to breath is fine but we're now at the stage where the vote margins are higher than the remaining votes to be counted!

"AP does not make projections or name apparent or likely winners. If our race callers cannot definitively say a candidate has won, we do not engage in speculation. AP did not call the closely contested race in 2000 between George W. Bush and Al Gore – we stood behind our assessment that the margin in Florida made it too close to call."

Is from their website. I don't recall accurately enough but they certainly didn't call the election which is what we're talking about here.

Although, having said that, Gore did actually get more votes, despite the ultimate 'result' of the state. I don't think that's a possibility her.

Sergeant Cecil,

The AP link you provided in your 23.58 post didn't work for me. However, I have no found the article to which you refer on their website [https://www.ap.org/en-us/topics/politics/elections/how-we-call-races]. Clearly, based on the sources I stated, there must be some dispute as to what counts as a call or perhaps whether an AP subgroup is part of the AP. I'll perhaps look into it later.

Gore may or may not have obtained more [legal] votes in Florida. However, the Florida Supreme Court had no lawful justification for making the rulings it did regarding the recounts. Hence, the Supreme Court tossed out its judgements. Whether they were then correct in their later 5-4 judgement is more debatable.

politicspunter,

That's 'cos there was no cheating in North Carolina! More likely, it's because, as you and/or others have already suggested, it would be a little awkward for Betfair to settle sufficient states in favour of Biden that would take him beyond 270 EC votes and yet not settle the Next President market.
By:

So Betfair settle North Carolina, you couldn't make it up could you.

If anyone who has backed Biden does not get paid, then it'd be straight to the small claims court. (Or the big claims court for the £1m punter!)

So they obviously know they have to pay out on Betfair, the other Bookmakers settlements, and their own rules mean they know they absolutely have to.

Some very poor decision makers at Betfair Towers........unless of course it's giving time for people to cash in their savings and get it on at 1.09 1.1 etc etc before settlement.

No of course it couldn't be that, what a thought.

It's a tricky one but I don't think it's relevant really for this market when Trump requires multiple states that Biden has won by clear margins.

It is rather embarrassing for Betfair to be settling all the states Trump has won but not the ones he is disputing. I've said it before, but it's not really a good look to be leaning into right-wing conspiracy theories. That said, I think we're close to the end of this market now, the certification process is carrying on whether Trump likes it or not and results will soon be finalised.
