the GN winner dying on course is huge news

of course racing doesn't know how to deal with it when horses die on course. the sentimental nonsense about how everyone in racing loves their horses vs the fact that the horses are really just tools for making people money

As the horse was known to have problems after running how come he wasn't dismounted and getting assistance straight away as a precaution? They seemed more interested in preparing the Oli Bell jockey interview. Ed said the horse got help as soon as it crossed the line but that's the usual welfare propaganda.

grey shark where do you get a link between this and the BBC pushing minorities? some people here have got minorities on the brain and think about little else...

Whether they do or whether they don't we have no option but to pay for it - that's the shame of it all. The tv licence should of been binned long, long ago.

what have minorities and a horse dying got in common.

As for the BBC it is the UK Government's tv channel.

Some people are batshit crazy.

So the BBC are scum because they have mentioned the fact that a courageous and former Grand National winner has lost its lifeConfused

Found it weird how ITV4 handled the initial reports after the horse collapsed. They treated it as if it was nothing and everything would soon be fine. They totally misread a very serious situation. Or was it that they wanted to convince any new and naive viewers that there was nothing to worry about, and that this is just pretty normal.

Very strange at cheltenham today without the winner in the paddock, Ollie will be distraught.

RIP Many Clouds

Only just watched the race , a sensational race , Smad Place , Many Clouds and Thistlecrack put on the type of quality race that few other sports ever get close to.

A very sad ending , but we all know it happens sometimes unfortunately.

I think ITV handled it well, it's not the first time the horse had issues after a race, you shouldn't assume the worst

it's so hard to take like this, it's bad enough when they fall and get put down, but to have won the race in such spectacular style and then die is just awful

the horses are really just tools for making people money

A_T with the most stupid statement I have ever read on the internet.

If you want a tool for making money, I can't think of a worse investment in the world than a gelded racehorse.

I thought ITV handled it very well too.

The after-the-line mic interviewer was kept out of it.
Initial reports were that it was a 'drenching the horse in buckets of cold water' situation, like after the National.
and they ran with it like that.

The RIP notification was quick, clear and dignified by Ed Chamberlain.
Ch-4 used to ignore it occasionally, hoping it would go away.

A real top horse, and a brave one at that.

Still feel really sad about this , can't quite understand why they continued to race him given his previous distress at the end of some of his races. Surely that was a big red flag. Though i do appreciate they thought the wind op would sort this.

That breathing op thing is a red herring in my book. Very sad but imo he shouldn't have been racing.

Synchronised is another who didn't need to die , hadn't he done enough that year .

The racing world bang on about welfare but bad decisions by connections trump that.

Or may I say greed.

Sad as it is lads, time to move on imo. Red Rum finished in the first two in five Grand Nationals. Nobody could have forseen this happening.
By:

When: 28 Jan 17 20:36
I don't think it's necessarily greed they just think the horse has more to offer. IMO on this occasion the authorities perhaps should have got involved. If a horse wobbles like this maybe a vet should have to officially declare the horse is under no more risk than other runners before it can run again,,,
By:

When: 28 Jan 17 20:38
To be fair Sherwood said they though the wobble problem at Aintree and Kelso might have been a breathing problem causing lack of oxygen and thought the breathing op had fixed that. It does amaze me that horses can complete until the end of the race and then collapse after the race when walking around.  The only time I remember it happening in a race was Browns Gazette.

It was there for all to see Many Clouds had a medical issue which could and did lead to this day.

Sprinter Sacre had something along the same lines and thankfully has been retired.

we live in a blame culture, it just has to be someones fault. much rather remember him for what he was. a very brave and very good horse, who did what he was bred to do, race.
By:

When: 28 Jan 17 20:39
As I said above I think the breathing op is a red herring. He probably needed a wind op regardless of the wobble issue. They threw water on him at Aintree - does that sound like a breathing issue?
