popped in to watch a race this afternoon whilst out at work.
no-one watching the racing but 3 of the 4 machines being used.

3 generations of the same family were playing on 1 machine. a young lad who didnt have any money on him, a mother who had got a few notes on her and an elderly lady, probably about 80 who sat with her purse open all the time on her lap.

i watched as they put in 80 quid and lost. the mother then put in 20 from her purse and lost. the grandmother then got out 80 from her purse. they lost this.

the grandmother then gave the mother her bank card and she went to the counter to get 80 put in the machine and 20 cashback.

they were taking it in turns to play the game. this 80 quid went quicker than the rest had and the mother pocketed the other 20 cashback.

they then put in their change and left.

i would like to say there was a happy ending to this but they seemed to know the cashiers very well so i can only assume they are regular losers in there.

You can safely bet your balls that these stinking bookies, acting like drug-pushers, won't have any self-exclusion facilities for these poor imbeciles Sad

I went into Hills to read the post today and I have to walk past the FOBTs and the screens. 4 FOBTs all being played, All 12 screens and not one showing prices for todays racing. The  members of the BHA should pay visits to these shops.

quite simply legalised theft.

I'm ecstatic to tell you guys I've never put even 10p in a fruit machine since I lost £18 when I was about 18 in the early 80's.

It hurt desperately at the time, and there was no enjoyment or judgement involved whatsoever - I felt pick-pocketed & headfcuked, so I decided I'd never put a bean in those fcukers again!

For that reason, I feel for these people who are getting bum-raped by these vile predators, and as someone mentioned, they should be illegal!

As everyone knows...LIFE is corrupt and somewhere down the line, large backhanders must have been involved, to pass these laws through Sad

acey - if people want to blow their money on these things then it is their choice. my issue is that its because of these machines that the bookies wont take bets on horseracing anymore. they dont need to take any risks on the gee gees as the machines are guaranteed income.
By:

acey. thats a difficult one...
some gamblers have a problem, no matter how they blow their money.

but surely the big difference is that although the odds are in the bookies favour to win at the horses at the end of a week. they are not 100% guaranteed.

with these machine the bookies are absolutely guaranteed by the people who own he machines, ie themselves..

thats called a fix in my book and surely that shouldnt be legal.

They are addicted to these machines, just as much as a drug user to heroin or an alcoholic to booze. Therefore they dont have a choice. Its a compulsion and they cant help themselves.

Whilst I agree with the general thrust of this thread -

It should also be pointed out that -

There is NO LIMIT to the number of Lottery tickets that, dreamers such as the above mentioned, can buy - and worse still ...

Those sodding equally addictive SCRATCHCARDS - available in practically every newsagents and Supermarkets.Cry

you know what makes me laugh? you tell people you gamble or trade on betfair and they are all over you like a rash, telling you no good will come of it and its a mugs game etc etc...later the same people can be found in casinos, in the bingo, buying lottery tickets or buying scratch cards

They are not bookmakers anymore. They just nudge and nurdle around betfairs show.

My brother owned a small independent shop back in the 80`s. The only shop in a small town. No screens just the blower, the sheets and a marker pen. Maximum payout was 4K Grin..He still laid bigger bets than they turn away these days.

They are no longer turf accountants.

Chisholms have exactly 50 shops, thats because of Gambling Commission criteria, any more then our friend Howard would need to dip in to his pocket and we can't have that.

johnny - i can assure u there is nothing made up about this story. if u live anywhere near milton keynes u can meet me and i will show u it on my phone. i recorded bits of it to show my missus. some videoed, some photos.
i see this sort of thing most days but this was the most galling thing i have seen on the machines, thats why i put it on here.

as for ther scratchcards and the lottery etc etc, the point is that the bookies wont take bets on racing anymore because of these machines. buying a scratchcard doesnt then mean u aren't allowed to buy a lottery ticket.

Christ, there are some unenlightened (?) individuals on this forum but i believe we've found a champ....so those born with low IQs should be left to suffer the consequences through their entire lives, no doubt eventually ending up in clink when you can moan that they are a drain on your taxes...did you used to post under username piltdownman?

ironically , he'd need a fairly low IQ to take that opinion in the first place.

I can be a compulsive gambler at times but I wouldn't go anywhere near these machines. I like to think there is at least a chance of me winning. I know a couple of being addicted to these. Me trying to get them to stop playing was a tough task. Luckily they managed to get into a small profit to take out or all their money would have went.

Are you actually bothered about people doing their conkers on FOBTs, aside from the fact it affects your ability to get your Pricewise bets on?
By:

gonzo - of course, thats why i was so shocked yesterday. it took it to a different level. normally just 1 person each time doing their conkers, this was 3 generations. the fact that the mother took all the cash from her mum and then used her bank card and pocketed the 20 cashback was disgusting.
i would like to think her mum knew the daughter withdrew 100 and not 80 but seeing what i did, i am not convinced.

I love the way people on here excuse themselves for being in a betting shop,'just to watch a race'or 'to read the racing post'.
As if they were caught by their peers in a sex shop.

Like most on here i bet mainly on line, but do go in bookies regularily cause i like to do multiples and cash bets.
I swore i would never play the fobt machines, but due to boredem i lost about 10 pounds and have not been on since.

As i was about to enter the other day a young man came sprinting down the street and bustled his way past me into the shop, and flung himself at an empty machine.

For a moment i was puzzled by this until i realized that the direction he'd been running from a bank cash machine was situated.

So it looked like he'd been playing this particular machine, done his conkers and was running back, replenished from his bank account, before anyone could win on his machine.
