Replies: 804 14 Aug 10 17:27 Ida's Delight consistent northern chaser often sent down south to pick up place money in valuable handicaps. Ida's Delight won a good few races at Ascot & Wetherby mainly because he had a good turn of foot for a chaser. |

Good reading, recognise all the names, amazing how a picture comes into your mind when a horses name is mentioned, mostly for financial reasons on my part, be them good or bad.

Yes Approaching was also placed with Mac Vidi in that 1980 gold cup , following the disqualification of the luckless Tied Cottage several weeks after the race

or was it Stratford or both tracks ..,. Jimmy Miff , regular at Uttoxeter won the Midlands national when it used to be run on a Saturday evening in early May was still running there when he was 15 . |

True Hayden, had a keen interest in racing since I was a boy, both parents were fanatics, the National always appealed to me as it was the one thing they both agreed on, said it was for once a year mugs who didn't know anything...!
Think I saw that as a challenge and but for Red Marauder's year,have managed a place at least each year starting with my first, Black Secret, to prove them wrong. |

Glad to see No Bombs in your list TB. He was a very good hurdler on his day. Won the big end of season handicap hurdle at Haydock in 1980. Bloody good field that day included Monksfield, Secret Ballot and Prayukta who had earlier won the Imperial Cup.

The crazy quilt colours ...... Professor Plum consistent chaser trainend by Capt.T Forster must 30 years ago . Charcoal Wally raced against another grey in Desert Orchid they had a fight to the line in a race think it was at Ascot , not quite Panto Prince style but it still got sir Peter excicted . |

Professor Plum was a fair chaser trained by Forster. Do you remember another Forster trained horse around the same time called Colonel Mustard?. He was a bold front runner and was often ridden by John Francome.

No Pauli don't recall CM ,
Straight Jocelyn , Tiepolino , Strombolus , Fairy King , Bueche Giorod , Bobjob , The Engineer , I'm a Driver are some other decent chasers i can recall from around 30 years ago. |

The Queen mothers Tammuz??, When the race consisted of around 30-40 runners, on the same day The aptly named Shock Result beat both Bula and Pendil
Maybe we are spoilt now with 24 hour sport, or its our age, but the sport having blanket coverage, like life, seems somewhat less special |

anyone remember Gay George -he was owned by the Duke of Devonshire, trained by Fulke Walwyn and used to be ridden by Bill Smith _a real favourite of mine .
Another favourite was Stalbridge Colonist _he beat Arkle on one occsion (albeit in receipt of bags of weight) . |

Hayden, my recollection of that three horse race was an SP of 4/11, 5/2 and 66/1, and it was the computer straight forecast which paid out a vast amount when a punter could have backed all combinations for 60p. As you say, the formula was changed shortly after, I think during Royal Ascot. I remember this well as I knew two of those whose task it was to rewrite the formula and design the computer program.

Professor Plum was a good friend to punters because more than once he won at a decent price at Wincanton on Boxing Day, a track and a day he seemed to like.

Yes I remember Gay George. He was a very good juvenile hurdler. Stalbridge Colonist raced before I started betting (I was still at school when he beat Arkle). Arkle gave him 35 lb and was only beaten half a length in the 1966 Hennessey (I believe Arkle picked up an injury in that race). To put that in perspective, Stalbridge Colonist was only beaten 3/4 of a length by Woodland Venture in the 1967 Gold Cup and was 3rd beaten a neck and 1 length by Fort Leney and The Laird in the 1968 renewal. So if anyone tells you that Arkle isn't the greatest - don't listen to a word they say.

Good stuff Xerophyte , awful long time ago and have never seen anything documented since tbh , the mention of Little owl just triggered the memory
Remember Gay George quite well and seem to recall it was a very difficult horse to place , top weight in any big handicaps as the cream generally missed those race but frustratingly around 7/10lb off the best so never a serious Champion contender. |
