Freight Forwarder was trainend by Arthur Pitt and ridden by claimer Ian Cox , and yes i recall now FF beating the very good Connaught Ranger . some amusing race names no longer with us ...... The Hairy Mary novice hurdle , used to be run on the Friday of a 2 day meeting at Ascot in January . The Soapey Sponge hunter chase , was run on the Friday of a 2 day meeting at Newbury in March . The Scunthorpe Slag handicap chase , run at Market Rasen until recently . |

storm alert , did something similar with the Brown Chamberlain bet but can't honestly remember at what price , also did a remarkably similar thing with Playschool as I fancied him strongly to beat the hotly fancied Kildimo , did get 14/1 for that one and went off around 11/2 going from memory

When Brown Chamberlain won the Sun Alliance I remember thinking he looked like he was being pulled up , in fact he was going so very awesomely well that he was being held up.

That's true Madhatter, it was Navigation that made people sit up and take notice of Derek Kent/Peter Haynes after it ran a great debut race at Ascot, Grand Canyon followed and proved to be a great purchase for all concerned

Yahoo was owned at one stage by Jack Hanson who employed a number of trainers but also trained for a while himself. |

did Badsworth Boy win the Champion Chase by a distance 1year?
Seem to recall he ran in the schweppes gold trophy that was won by Donegal Prince with Ekbalco 2nd giving lumps of weight away(very similar effort to Rooster Booster a few yrs back) right out the back & sliced thro em like a knife thro butter with "gypsy "Dave Goulding sitting motionless but the effort& weight concession proved to much. Back in 6th or 7th that day was an Irish hoss For Auction receivng about 20 lb & a mullering from Ekbalco. Still cant believe to this day how he came out 4 weeks later & won the champion hurdle. |

Loving Words finished 4th in the National after being remounted.He made up so much ground that he would clearly have won but for falling.Seen to recall that I had £40 at 14/1.

Jambo....what an unlucky horse, he actually finished 3rd, just beating Delmoss. Grittar was a popular winner, but I'm sure Loving Words would have won. That must have been a sore one to take.

Incorrect The incomparable Badsworth Boy won his first Champion Chase by a distance , not his last when Bobsline fell coming down the hill. That must be one of the greatest races we never saw , as they were both tanking at the time. |

Yes lovely character Little bay , used to run with a low head carriage I seem to remember , a bit like the Fitzgerald pair Sybillin & Comeragh King although not as low as those two " grazers "

Sorry Tribal Dancer, I'm afraid that I cannot recollect Paemako Prince. No iamajambo they didn't. But Rambling Artist did win the Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby in the late 70's.

Jambo, I remember Rambling Jack being well fancied for Grittars national, but fell at the first with his stablemate Three To One. Twin Oaks was a cracking horse round Haydock, 5th in Party Politics national, where Neale Doughty was given a bit of stick for giving him too much to do. Great old stayer!

Geoff m you mentioned the Schweppes Gold Trophy and it reminded me of Bootlaces who won the race in 1980. Bootlaces had run a great race when 3rd behind Golden Cygnet and Western Rose in the 1978 Supreme Novices Hurdle at the Festival. However, the horse had not reproduced anywhere near that form since. Carrying 10-9 Baron's thought he was very well handicapped and he did not go unbacked when winning easily at 20-1.
