Grey Shark, yeah, Kilbrittain Castle, pretty sure it was trained by Walwyn. Remember him coming from an almost impossile position to win at Sandown in late 80's, think The Dragon Master was the unlucky second. Been a great read this thread, so I'll throw in a few more old names from the past. This gets better and better.
Sacred Path/Crusiing Altitude ran in the same colours as The West Awake who hasn't had a mention I think and also another talented performer called Latent Talent. Kilbrittain Castle was a Sandown specialist and always used to fly up the Esher hill. I was once lucky enough to be sat next to Kath Walwyn at a lunch and told her he was one of my favourite Walwyn horses, along with Everett. She plumped for Taxidermist I believe! Von Trappe was Dunwoody's first Festival winner - does anyone remember him finishing second in a televised novice chase under Woody at Cheltenham (in January I think) when he made one horrible error but the rider managed to nurse him round and nearly win. First time I'd seen him and was convinced he'd become champion. |

400 Nocte was owned by a group of directors of the pharmaceutical firm Smith Kline & French. The company made a fortune from the anti ulcer drug Tagamet (the fore runner of Zantac). The horse's name came from the dossage instructions, I'm guessing 400 mg to be given at night. It was trained by Nicky Hendrson, and as far as I can remember only won once. I have only looked at this thread occasionally so don't know if anyone has mentioned Yangtse Kiang. The spelling may be wrong(I'm sure Freebooter could correct me.) I remember Yangtse running in the west country about 20 or more years ago. |

noidea...thanks, I was convinced he fell in Cheltenham 4m chase at new year when Solihull Sport won (another blast from the past), but was starting to think I had dreamt the name up. punch...yeah, there's s a subtle difference in style. Ha! Was always a good horse over hurdles, but my lasting memory was of him travelling well in the Irish National, when he fell. |

The mention of Gay George reminds me of a supposedly true tale of the day when he won at the formerly staged mixed Newbury meeting on the Friday. Gay George ran in the conditions hurdle following the Horris Hill, which Montekin had just won. As the race began, John Dunlop turned to Henry Cecil( or vice versa) and said, ' I forgot how boring this jump game is, lets go and watch a replay of the Horris Hill'.

Canny Danny - a decent Jimmy Fitz chaser who beat Bregawn one day at Haydock, though was getting a chunk of weight. Well named - had the perfect pedigree - by Le Coq D'Or out of Sweet F&nny.

fidway, sure i remember his colours being simlar to that of Favourites Racing owners'.
Remember Door Latch, decent horse. Well fancied for 86 national, but fell at first. Hamner called him as being brought down by Port Askaig, but he definitely fell of his own accord. Was good to see Jim Joel getting compensation with Maori Venture the next year. |

Don't think Bannow Rambler has been mentioned yet. When he won the Harold Clarke at Leopardstown, Timeform rated it as the best by a chaser during the 76/77 season. Started favourite for the Gold Cup and was brought down by Lanzarote's fatal fall. Another form that Gold Cup was the Bob turnell/Jum Joel Summerville who looked to have the race run before breaking down.

This thread is like a fine wine - it's getting better with age. Remember Tragus ok. Won a few quid on him in his first season over fences when he won 5 times. He liked racing up with the pace. Trained by David Morley.

Just watched that Team Spirit National HAYDEN. Pretty strong renewal that. Kilmore and Ayala (winners in 1962 and 1963) were in the field. Noticed Kilmore and Fred Winter coming to grief. Commentator said the fences were modified. Jesus, they didn't look modified to me - Becher's looked awesome.

remember being at chepstow for the welsh champion chase run on the easter tuesday,were "summerville" took on bula in a match.summerville the outsider came out victories as i think bula fell.used to enjoy the two day easter meetings at chepstow,with the welsh champion hurdle on the monday!

Here's Summerville leading over the 2nd last in the Davy Lad gold cup of 1977 , this clip is yet another reminder of how unfortunate Tied Cottage was not to be in the record books as a winner of the race , what on earth did he have to do to win the race and keep it

Yes peterhiggins he was a champion alright. My favourite racehorse of all time. Everytime the Ebor approaches I think of that day 31 years ago. To carry 10-0 to victory in any handicap is an achievement but to do so in the Ebor, one of the top handicaps in Europe, is a truly remarkable feat. No horse has done it since and it will take a special one to do it again. Who could forget Francome's ride in 1981. A cooler ride in a Grade 1 race you will never see. Sea Pigeon's record on the flat and over hurdles speaks for itself.

Number Engaged , chaser trainend by Fulke Walwyn in the late 70's , think there was/is a race named after him at Folkstone.
Otter Way and Ottery News both trainend by O J Carter . Floyd trained by David Elsworth very useful hurdler from the 80's . Freight Forwarder won 5 hurdles in a row on fast ground in 1979 . Brown Chamberlain good chaser who won many times at Newbury. |

Another couple that bring back memories are Lucky Vane and The Refrigerator. Old Lucky Vane needed at least 4 miles and a bog before getting going but I really fancied him for The Eider one year, unfortunately the conditions were so much in his favour they cancelled the meeting! The Refrigerator won a fair few low grade chases around the gaffs.

Loved Brown Chamberlain and was at Newbury for his Hennessy win , had that one chance to win a gold cup but the combination of veering to the right hand rail and meeting a top notch chaser in Burrough Hill Lad was just too much for him , won many times at Newbury as you say grey shark and there was a chase named in his honour

Burrough Hill Lad was pure quality. If it had stayed sound it won have won a lot more than the 1 Gold Cup. I think it was 1/2 for the Gold Cup in 85 when pulled out a couple of days before the race. I remember it's warm up for the Gold Cup when it came in a distant 4th to Earls Brig when odds on. Jenny Pitman was interviewed by the Beeb and expressed herself well satisfied with the run as it was just out for exercise really. Can't imagine them saying something like that these days!
Another old favourite of mine was Combs Ditch. It got injured and had a fair old while off, when it came back it did so in a run of the mill hurdle race and actually won at 25-1! |

Red Rum will always be my favourite horse
Lanzarote will always be my second favourite - I cried my eyes out when he was killed in the Gold Cup. I can't believe that Viking Flagship isn't mentioned as far as i can see!! Also, no-one has mentioned Brantridge Farmer. You should also look up a horse called Catsgore.....had a remarkable habit of falling at the last when in front! |

best hurdler perfomence in the history of the game NIGHT NURSES dead heat over MONKSFIELD giving that horse 6lbs in the old templegate hurdle on national day, champion hurdler beating a champion hurdler, dosnt come any better

After that won the Sun Alliance in 82 so impressively Brown Chamberlin was an amzing price for the 83 Hennessey especially with connections Fred Winter & John Francome. 16/1 the Tuesday before the race I remember nipping out at lunchtime to get that price. He was 7/1 early prices on the day and I remember getting that price at lunchtime. Those were the days prices don't last like that any more. |
