VECTIS , yes remember Flatterer running a great race against a See You Then that was probably just showed the signs his reign was over despite winning , another old favourite jumped the last almost upsides the winner at the last but you'll need to watch the clip to find out

Barnbrook Again ! fantastic horse, back then P O`Sullivan use to abbreviate horses when commentating,Dessie,Barnie,Cavvies etc,really use to tick me off .

Yes PO is one of Ireland's finest produce for me , who can forget Attivo & Be Friendly and wouldn't this have been a weird commentary to listen to or indeed commentate on....
Another popular horse he owned was Attivo, whose victory in the 1974 Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival was described by O'Sullevan as the most difficult race to call. After passing the line, O'Sullevan uttered “And it’s first Attivo ... trained by Cyril Mitchell ... ridden by Robert Hughes ... owned by Peter O'Sullevan”.  |

For some reason Celtic Ryde has come to mind. He was a hurdler of potential until his untimely death in 1981.

Halkopous in the early 90's a fav for me. Hosed up one day in the Bula. I ssem to remember he was pretty decent on the flat too.
Coulton got a mention earlier - he followed up at aintree after the cathcart. Remember Osborne on board just getting him up on the line. My binoculars spun around me neck nearly knocking me out shouting it home. Memories. |

I'm not sure if Willie Wumpkins has had a mention yet but he certainly deserves one. A real mudlark, he won 3 consective Coral Golden Hurdle Finals (as it was known then) from 1979-81. Willie Wumpkins was not the best hurdler to grace the Festival but he was a great favourite ridden on each occasion by the talented amateur Mr Jim Wilson, who also won the Gold Cup in 1981 on Little Owl. Incidentally, for anyone who hasn't seen it, Little Owl's Gold Cup is well worth a look. He held off the renewed challenge of Night Nurse and had Silver Buck, Spartan Missile and Jack of Trumps well behind (a very strong field indeed). Willie Wumpkins actually beat Little Owl in the 1979 Final (carrying 3 lb overweight).

pauli , just watched that gold cup again and agree a quality field , the mention of Little Owl reminded me of something other than winning a race , does anyone remember a 3 horse race consisting of Little Owl , Venture To cognac and Great Dean and any significance ?

Willie Wumpkins also won the Sun Alliance Hurdle (then run under its original name, the Aldsworth Hurdle) at the Cheltenham festival, as a 5yo. His treble of hcap hurdle wins were gained at ages 11,12 and 13.

Yes wasn't that the three horse race where Little Owl was a very short price but he cocked his jaw and was pulled up. Venture To Cognac won and Great Dean a massive price finished second. The tote dual (was it called that?) return was huge and didn't bookies cry foul and Jim Wilson was accused of somehow orchestrating the situation? |

spot on storm , this is all memory but sure the facts are near enough , the odds looked something like....
1/3 Little owl 9/4 Venture To Cognac 150/1 Great Dean In those days there was a f/cast chart stuck on bookmakers walls and the simple calculation was to add a pt to the runner up and multiply , so 4/1 & 4/1 would pay £20 for example , in this case the f/cast paid something like £340 which was effectively 339/1 for Little Owl not completing the course , so when Little Owl left the race under a cloud the investigation began and the outcome went a long way to re-structuring the method of calculating a f/cast dividend. Imagine a novice chase these days effectively receiving £340 for the fav to fall in a 3 horse race , you'd be lucky to get £20 |

ekbalko , would normally agree tbh but the thread has turned out to be more about remembering the forgotten horses , not sure it was designed to turn out that way but probably just proves what affection there is for the jumps game with horses staying in training for several years which is not always the case on the flat.

I agree with you HAYDEN. Istabraq was not a deliberate omission. No one would doubt that he was a brilliant hurdler. To win at 4 consective Festivals was a fantastic achievement. It was so sad to see him pulling-up in his last race at the 2002 Festival. He will never be forgotten.

I was there that day and it tipped down all day, the ground wa s like a quagmire. I backed him to small stakes because of his price , he was up against Remittance Man a short priced favourite who needed good ground. It was Katabatics first run for Josh Gifford and he wo easiliy. |

Funnily enough I can't recollect Katabatic doing much after that race. Despite winning easily maybe the race took more out of him than was realised at the time.

Those would be the 2 i'd remember best punchestown , but do remember Regal Ambition winning the Sun Alliance for the Pipe team.
What about a couple of characters from the Fitzgerald team in Sybillin & Comeragh King , they used to carry their heads that low it was like they were grazing on the way around |

Berlin useful 2 miler ran in several novice chasers against Dessie. Ida's Delight consistent northern chaser often sent down south to pick up place money in valuable handicaps. Rock Saint and Mac Vidi both Lingfield regulars MV finished 3rd in a gold cup aged 15. Royal Judgement and Kilbritain Castle decent chasers trainend by Fulke Walwyn , i think ?? |

Royal Judgement was a Josh Gifford horse I seem to remember , have a vivid memory of him attempting to concede Burrough Hill Lad around 19lb in the Welsh Grand National before finishing a brilliant 2nd , in hindsight that was one of the most difficult tasks in NH history and even challenges the Crisp weight concession to Red Rum I would think.

Sondrio and Sayfars Lad won the big novice hurdles at Cheltenham.
Sondrios previous run was at Hereford where he knocked every hurdle out of the ground. Not sure if he ever ran again IIRC. |
