Only 16 years ago but the '94 grand national is a fav race.
Minnehoma ,leading home Just So , Moorcroft Boy , Ebony Jane (Irish Grand National winner) & Fiddlers Pike with Rosemary Henderson. But look at the ones that didn't finish 3 Gold Cup winners - Master Oats , Garrison Savannah , The Fellow Dual Whitebread winner - Topsham Bay Foxhunter winner - Double Silk |

I remember Jimmy Miff wumpkins. Bit of a dodgy jumper if I remember correctly. He came a cropper at Becher's in the National one year - not sure what year it was. Trained by Wardle wasn't he?

The ground conditions were so bad that no other race meeting would have gone ahead that day.I was hoping for heavy ground as I had bet Moorcroft Boy to win £11K,but the ground turned the race into a farce,maybe even more so than Red Marauder's day. |

Yes that is correct regarding Proud Tarquin in the Whitbread. Before that he raced in Ireland trained by Tom Dreaper, think he won a Troytown at Navan and a race or two at the Cheltenham festival

Spot on mrcombustible. Proud Tarquin won the Sun Alliance in 1970 at 100-7. Trained by Dreaper and ridden by Pat Taaffe.

I think one of the things that made it so good yesteryear was that we didn't have SIS, RUK and ATR. We had Saturday racing on the Beeb and ITV and the tanoy in the bookies to follow our favourites around the gaffs. Somehow for me that was better; I have very fond memories of things like Yangste Kiang and Allied Newcastle and many more like them....I've even formed pictures of them in my mind but I probably never actually saw them race, just listened over the tanoy. A bit like the footy for me, I used to sit in the house on FA Cup final day watching the team bus on route to the stadium etc and loved the whole occasion. Now, there is so much coverage I barely bat an eyelid.
Anyway, some others that bring back fond memories for me were: Runover....won from the most tailed off position ever Last Deal....won loads of races for me Burrough Hill Lad....still think when it was fit it was as good a horse as I've ever seen Cats Eyes...won a seller and in doing so got my 10p yankee up! Townley Stone....I got all excited about this one and convinced myself it was the 2nd coming Nohalmdun, Humberside Lady and many many more. |

Yes Browne hard to disagree and maybe it's like anything else in life when the TV racing was covered it was like xmas day but now we can watch every race both live and recorded as many times as we like , that expectation will never quite be the same I guess , have never followed soccer so can't relate to that comparison.
By the way that Run Over race was extraordinary to say the least and agree Burrough Hill Lad was a machine when right , disappointing day for me when Brown Chamberlain veered to the right in that gold cup or it may have been close but not taking any credit away from the winner , if the race was run at Newbury then sure it would have been a different story. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulCB4Afd1ZA |

You're right BG. I used to get my Sporting Chronicle everyday. You had time to study every race in those days, no chance of doing that now. Somehow listening on the tannoy was more exciting because you were never sure how your horse was going. It could be scary especially if you had backed a dodgy jumper.

Another old favourite of mine was a giant hunter chaser called Further Thought. It had a quite potent turn of foot after the last. Between that and Flying Ace I fairly cleaned up in the hunter chases those days.

another favorite of mine was "scot lane" trained by the shrewd martin tate,had him at nice odds in the big staying chase at the festival.it was worth making the effort to go racing in them days,as with no worthwhile tv coverage you could get a major edge!

You've just reminded me knot in wood. Tate had a horse called Bawnogues who I could never get right. He won the 1978 Mackeson and a few other races besides. He used to run at the big meetings and was useful on his day.

Used to like the early season jumpers when the jumps started begining of August .....
Carrigeen Hill won 9 novice chases in a row in 1978 and was still running aged 16. Grey Dolphin , prolific winning fast ground chasers of 30 years ago . Yangtze Kiang , Mouldy old Dough , Low Profile , Allied Newcastle , Shoot the Lights , etc John Jenkins used to be the leading trainer for the early part of the jumps season in them days with Francome riding many of them . |

Another one with Tate, which used to be a regular in decent races was St Alezan. Ran well for a long way in 86 National.

Do you remember a Kennard horse called Yes Yes Yes?. He could drive himself to Devon and Exeter. They were like old friends coming back to greet you every August.

pauli,dont think manny people knew what martin tate was up to,would not fancy playing poker with him. think yangtze kiang was/or became a 5f sprinter for milton bradley,you jogged my memory with that one grey shark.

Yangtze Kiang, Blue Dolphin and Kyoto were three who ran up sequences for Milton Bradley back in the day - he wasn't at all bad with a 2-mile chaser!

Rogers Princess was another for Martin Tate - won the Joe Coral Golden Hurdle under Shaun Keightley, possibly from the gallant Henry Mann.

A quick look suggests that Tom Kemp was the trainer of My Dominion - think Dave Nevison had a horse or two with Tom in the early days.

Anyone remember Grand Canyon? Trained by Derek Kent. Great chaser

Will never forget Grand Canyon. Won the Colonial Cup twice. Free going front runner. He was neck and neck with Silver Buck when falling in the King George in 1979. One of Kent's New Zealand breds. He also trained another called Narribinni at one time.
