Which leads me on to the SGN winner Ryalux Also remembering from my youth Young Ash Leaf, Simian, Richdee, Pendil, Moidore's Token, Winter Rain, Glanford Brigg, Traite de Paix, Lesley Ann + one that doesn't fall into a category is Go Ballistic as I could bore for England (and often do) about my winning Trifecta in SMB's Gold Cup |

The mention of Corporal Clinger brings back memories. Can’t remember the race but I went into my local Ladbrokes and had £5 ew on at 10/1. I wrote the price on the bet about 10.30am. Later found out it had won at 11/2 and pleased for once I’d beat the bookie. When I went to collect they paid me at 11/2 stating that the person taking the bet had not initialled it. I asked them to check the price at 10.30am but they refused. Never had another bet with Ladbrokes and it has cost them a fortune.

Foyles reference to older horses reminded me of Mac Vidi,raced into mid teens I think,also Peaty Sandy though not sure how old.My maternal grandfather gave us a horse for hunting and showing,an unraced son of Vulgan.would his progeny still be around in the 70s or would he be the grandsire by then?
Just seem to remember jumpers with Vulgan in their name. |

Most of the traditional jumping yards still had a Vulgan or two in the 70's. Fulke Walwyn with The Dikler and also with Exhibit B who ran in one of the Embassy Finals.

Vulgan died in 1968 at the age of 25. His last offspring were foaled the following year.
He was champion NH sire 10 times, the last time in 73/74. His son Fort Vulgan, then aged 9, ran in the 1977 Grand National (brought down at the 4th) for Ken Oliver, and I'm sure he was represented by offspring a few times after that. Vulgan is one of only 2 horses to have sired winners of the Champion Hurdle, Gold Cup, and Grand National. He was a decent stayer on the flat (he won the Queen Alexandra at Ascot as a 5yo having been 2nd in the Gold Vase 3 days earlier), whereas the other one once got beat in a selling hurdle at Bournemouth. |

Collins won the Foxhunters at Cheltenham, and the Pardubicka, and rode third in the Grand National. I recall he was quite a big lad too but not sure - what am I saying, lad!! - he is 10 years older than me.

Mac Vidi was 15! dambuster, the oldest horse placed in a Gold Cup. Re Sonny Somers, I think he won his last race aged 18; he certainly raced at 18.

Sonny Somers won twice during a February, aged 18, Southwell and Lingfield, over 3 miles. Sprinted away from his rivals on the last occasion and won by 5.

Remember Osbaldeston also trained by Fred Winter i think , ran as an old timer but not sure he was anywhere near Sonny Somers age.

Yes dambuster Mac Vidi promoted to runner up behind Master Smudge due to the Tied Cottage disqualification , remember it well ( i think ) as Border Incident unshipped Francome when cantering around 3 out , Francome quoted after the race he'd have won by a minute

Another good chaser that Winter trained was Observe. Never quite top class but had his big day when winning the Foxhunters at 33/1 under Charlie Brooks. I could not believe the price on the day. Only a memory post so please check my facts! A few years earlier I was at Exeter when a horse I part owned called Meister won his first novice hurdle and we then backed Flurry Knox (also Jim Old trained) without Observe who was odds on in a conditions chase. He was around 5/1 without and the right result ensued until Mr. Ed Whettam forgot to weigh in! Meister won the Bristol Novice at Cheltenham next time out-my only ever Cheltenham win as an owner. Flurry Knox and Meister were both useful chasers.
