The race was unkindly called "The obscurity" for quite a few years until it started to throw up some decent three year olds

I remember Apalachee winning the then Observer Gold cup by 8l fron Mississipian in 73 and being odds on for the 2000 where he was turned over

Some fantastic horses named on this thread.  Given all the top horses he has trained and all the top races he has won, surely the time has come for Henry to become Sir Henry Cecil.

Eddery tracked him into the straight and the thing didnt even give EGS a proper tow

That's right Zilzal1,Claude Monet died a death 2 out leaving EGS in front.
Never seen a horse travelling so easily in a derby.

Great guineas winner and although he never ran over 1m 1/4 i'd imagine he would have been pretty much unbeatable.

Yes topfarrier interesting thought , although Robert Sangster had an embarrassment of riches that year and won the Eclipse anyway with non other than Sadler's Wells.

I'll add four that never quite made it but had massive reputations:
Running Bull - appeared mid-season in the late 70's and was supposed to be his best 2-y-r-o and a long term prospect.

Borzoi - Had a massive reputation right from the go and although he was useful ( think he ran in Dickens Hill's Eclipse) was an ultimate let down.

Saison - Wildenstein filly who won her maiden in early 1980 was was considered by the rumour boys to be definitely up to winning a G1.She then lined up in the 1,000 on her next outing where her lack of top class ability was exposed.

Brigata - A Brigadier gered filly who at one time headed the market for the 1,000 Gn, in the mid-70's before stepping onto a racecourse. Turned out to useless.

I think that Sadlers Wells beat Secreto in the irish guineas.
Here's another interesting thought HAYDEN,IF David'Brian[Charle's talented brother] hadn't retired so soon would Aiden be in ballydoyle now?

Verbo, i remember that Guineas, Saison was backed down from 33/1 Ante Post then won at Newbury prior to the 1000, think she went off fav??

He also ran the Nell Gwyn winner Evita, but both flopped behind Quick as Lightning and i cant remember any of them winning again, in fact the best oss in the Race may have been Mrs Penny who won the Diane and was runner up to Ela Mana Mou in the King George after looking all over the winner a furlong out when Lester was sitting motionless

i remember when i was a teenager i always read the newmarket gallop reports, for months on end they raved about sabrehill until the week before his debut when he must have put in a poor gallop. he then proceeded to win his debutn at newmarket at the inflated odds of 15/2,i had him in a 3x wi 2 other cecil horses, lyphards delta won at 7/1 and a short price fav let me down for the treble Cry

All At Sea was the best horse I've seen in the flesh. I was at Longchamps the day she won the Prix du Moulin from a field that included the legendary Arazi.

Love the comment when asked whether he's the best horse he owned

"He's the best anyone has ever owned"

Visually the best two year old performance personally ive seen, reminded me of National Velvet or a Hollywood film, but was for real

Don't think Arazi ran in the Moulin.

Didn't he have some sort of operation at the end of his 2 year old career? Might have been the reason he flopped so badly at 3.

If I remember right (and it was a very log time ago), Arazi was entered in the race, but didn't run for some reason. So, All At Sea is the best I've witnessed close up.

Ardross my favourite , what a horse , so near to winning the Arc.

I have a drawing of him framed in the hall , bought it at Doncaster on Leger day when Oh So Sharp completed the last (possibly forever) fillies Triple Crown for the maestro.

Ardross really showed his class in the 1982 Arc.  Beaten a head by Akiyda.

i was on all at sea ante post after she won at nottinghan i think , she went for muisidora again i think, anyway she was around 10/11 for oaks, and cantered up to user friendly 3 out,  would have netted me 3000 a lot then , she would have toched 1.3 at that stage if we had this then

Still recovering from my losses on Scimitarra in the Oaks.

When: 06 Aug 10 21:34
Poor Scimitarra - not sure how well she was catually going (cruising according to commentary) but at least they managed to save her.

Peter Davies might not have been the type to train on, but I wished I owned him. He was gorgeous in the flesh, if a little flashy for some.

I remember Adonijah well and saw Chalon winning when I was very young - possibly beating one called Mirabeau - anyone remember that name?

I too remember Scimitarra breaking down in the Oaks won by Stoute's Unite,Captain Gerrard's 2nd dam is none other than Scimitarra.
