Approval was his first top level horse I think. (Wolver Hollow he'd only just taken over from Boyd-Rochfort). My dad did his nuts on him one Saturday afternoon (don't know what race; horse won RP trophy as 2yo, and Dante as 3yo) and came home early from the betting shop as he was skint. Then sat down to watch the late afternoon results come in, and 2 of his favourite horses - Red House (HR Price) and Saratoga Skiddy (F Armstrong) both won at about 100/8).
Relay Race - good middle distance horse, but got beat in John Porter by a brilliant ride by Piggott on Wragg's Freefoot. Starkey rode Relay Race, and Piggott held him in a crucial point of the race. I think Starkey got the sack from Cecil as a result. Mystificateur - a beautiful tall almost black horse with a long narrow blaze - won a Sandown maiden by about 6 lengths despite veering across the track. Don't think he won much else though. Masked Marvel - impressively won a division a division of the Spring Maiden at Newbury over about 1m3f on Spring Cup day - Cecil seemed to win at least one division of that every year around then. His filly Volcanic won the last race on the card. I can't remembr any of those last 3 winning much else, even though they were all impressive on the day. and came home early f |

Certainly remember the Diesis V Gorytus Dewhurst. Worked tne lbos @ that time & had the Friday off to go to that Dewhurst. Gorytus had been a most impressive debut(Acomb beating Salieri of Cecils/St George) & subsequent champagne winner(beating Harwoods proclaim)having the likes of Alex Bird drooling. Looked a superb beast in the paddock b4 Dewhurst. But infamously left one huge "dump" behind & was subsequently found to have been doped. The event was a major anti climax with Diesis winning readily & Gorytus never returning to the level of form /promise shown previously. |

Sabrehill was my fav Cecil horse. Seemed to be always mentioned in the gallop reports in the Racing Post so I eagerly took the 3-1 morning price in his maiden.
Drifted to 15-2 so I assumed he must've been playing up going down, but he still hosed up. Pretty sure he went lame when looking the winner in the Juddmonte. Never raced again, such a shame. One of those horses that cruised and instantly quickened. So exciting to watch. Imo, could have been an alltime great. |

By:
had forgotten about salieri, more of this kind of threads, i really enjoyed my racing then
|
|
By:
brodie i wrote exactly the same thing about sabrehill and hill gallop reports.remember him getting disqualified at newbury too. a travesty but them were the days when a jockey could do what he wanted and still keep the race

i started gambling seriously around 1999/2000.
ive always followed his yard for some reason. some of his horses from around then - protectress. won a very good listed race on debut. i waited on her running again all winter. beaten on her only start at 3. half glance. won a group race at doncaster which i think is cecils last uk 2yo group winner. didnt train on. ended up narrowly winning a conditions race at odds on. revealing. won a newmarket maiden but never raced again. java. i believe she was around the top of the oaks market one year when unraced but couldnt win a maiden. vacamonte. got beaten at short odds on his 2nd start. didnt run as a 3yo. succinct. won a listed race at newbury then was near last in the ribblesdale. sayadaw. won a leicester maiden, was still in the leger until the 5 day stage i think. didnt run until the john porter as a 4yo. only raced 3 times. i hoped one of these horses might win good races for him, thats what i expected at that time. although he was about to have a very lean spell. |

April Run was the 4th A

A couple more that have I think yet to be mentioned:
Owen Jones - A full brother to Royal Palace. Won the Cecil Frail H'cap ( now the Tote Dual Forecast or whatever)at Haydock in the mid 70's under Australian lightweight Mal Johnston who was a butcher with the stick. Just held on to beat the high class Elsey topweight,Don. Many Moons - One of the Wildenstein horses in the yard in the late 70's. A progressive backend 2 year old who won the Zetland Stakes.Failed to train on. |
|
By:
Brush Aside was a 4 year old who looked like being a world beater - beautiful son of Alleged with a wonderful action - but broke down at Newmarket races on firm ground and never raced again.

By:
absolutely dotted up in the John porter @ Newbury.

Enjoying this thread
No one has mentioned Mark of Esteem who was nurtured in the early stages of his career by the master. If I remember correctly he was the horse at the centre of the spat between HRAC and Sheikh Mo. Just think how good he would have been in his 3yo career if he had stayed with Henry ![]() |

By:
interesting to see cecils only entry in the dewhurst is running in a maiden at newmarket on friday night.its name is frankel and he is a galileo colt out of a danehill mare and owned by khaled abdullah. when it makes its debut and wins by 6 lengths then wins the guineas and derby next year remember where you heard it 1st
|
|
By:
remember mark of esteem making his debut and finishing 2nd to alhaarth who looked a world beater but didnt really do much as a 3yo.not doing to bad a stud though
|
|
By:
The horse Frankel was mentioned on a good thread on the ante-post forum
"Some interesting unraced two year olds" Presumably named after the late Bobby Frankel who passed away last year, and who trained for K Abdullah in the States. Will be watching his introduction with interest although it is rare for HRAC to wind his 2yo up first time out these days. Although in saying that some of his better ones have made winning debuts at HQ in the last few years such as Twice Over and Wingwalker. You would think that if they were going to name an animal after a great trainer they would want that horse to be pretty decent. |
|
By:
hard to believe henry hasnt had a 2yo group race winner in uk for 9 years.changed days
|
|
By:
Two of Henry's lesser lights from the early 1980's.
Abordage - won a maiden at Yarmouth. Video Tape - won a maiden at Newmarket at 25-1. |
|
By:
I remember a horse called Piaffer with fondness
He won the 1 mile Crocker & Bulteel Handicap at Ascot on Diamond day 2 years on the trot |
|
By:
I remember a horse that won at yarmouth one day called Tahitian king J.MERCER odds on and a horse who won on king george day called Evita.
|
|
By:
I fondly remember Clan Ben winning at Sandown on Eclipse day,Fallon brought him with a lovely late run on the outside to win cosily, later in the day fooked it up totally on Bosra Sham, although she may have struggled to win anyway because Pilsudki looked mustard that day.

Leo De Vinci def won Wood Ditton, my grandad, who was well known in Newmarket was told they thought it was the second coming, went rather wonky after its second race, it wouldnt go on the gallops, ive got a signed picture of Lester in Ardross silks, for my 40th birthday, from Mrs St George, I clean it every day

Primitive Rising in the Stavros Niarchos colours was one of my faves. Remember him winning first time out as a 3-y-o at Newbury in a h'cap, then was told he would not be beat at R.Ascot in the 12f h'cap.
It tipped it down and he won by 6 lengths or some such. Think that may have been the year Henry had about 6 R.Ascot winners including Paean in the Gold Cup. And don't forget Henry's h'cap good thing that won the Ebor - Knoosh was he called - in the C. St George colours...? |

By:
Owen Dudley rings a bell with me , seem to remember it running in the Wood Ditton but not 100& sure it was trained by Cecil ?
