Was leonardo Da Vinci originally trained by P.Walwyn ?seem to recall Eddery dotting up in the White Rose Stakes @ Ascot getting off & saying it was best horse hed ever ridden.

Sabrehill would have been a superstar, remember being at NMKT when he made his debut under Pat in the Sheik Mo 2nd colours as I believe J Gosden trained Lacotte who was fav that day, he drifted like a barge on course and won 1t 15/2 I think. Sabrehill made mincemeat of them that day. Did he then go straight to a pattern race, beat Bobzao but lost the race in the stewards room before the fateful injury in the Juddmonte behind Ezzound. looked like he had them beat that day. Well above is what I remember, it's been a few years now.

Gayane won first time beating a balding horse called something like chasing moonbeams, i was on, Gayane was speedy.
he also had a horse called something along?, i had a 5 grand double on that horse and dancing brave, no starting price was returned on dancing brave, so it became a single on the cecil horse, it won at 5/6. Cecil and Cauthen, they were the best. ![]() |

did he have a horse called cajun, in the late 70s early 80s

Yep Cajun was yellow with black striped sleeves from memory but cant recall who owned.
Really good 2 yr old but cant recall what he did @ 3 plus. |
|
By:
I recall his first winner at Ripon in the late sixties, Celestial Cloud. Other winners at that time at Yorkshire tracks that spring to mind are Sapsford, Trehayle, Orosio, Breach of Promise, Flash of Light, each of them big difters in the market. Nobody had yet cottoned on.

Yes Cajun won at Royal Ascot, he was forcast 4/1 cos all the tipsters had gone for something else. Opened 5/4, went 6/4 but only for about twenty seconds. Betting was different in those days, you could dodge around and usually beat the price but Ladbrokes were smashing it and I ended up taking 11/10 after most had finished betting, think it returned 10/11. It won ok but by the time of the Middle Park, Lester was trying to get off it to ride something else. Cecil made him ride it, and Lester made it win and it went off 20/1! But that was as good as he ever was. Brief candle.

I remember Henry having a horse called Wayne Lukas at the same time that D Wayne Lukas apparently had a horse called Henry Cecil. I think both may have raced in Ahmed Salman's Thoroughbred Corporation silks.

cheers for that guiness.
Frankel was given a super debut ride by Queally. |

Yep, will have learned plenty from that..

Great post pub reading this thread. Been a massive fan of the guy since I got into the game mid-80s and it's a disgrace he's not a Sir.
Glad someone mentioned Diminuendo's Yorkshire Oaks - annihilated a G1 winner in Sudden Love, and took a huge chunk off the York 12f course record (3 seconds ?) despite being eased right down in the final furlong. Think it was one of Henry's rare mistakes to run her in the Leger on softening ground afterwards, a Diesis filly who had started the season over less than half that distance in the Nell Gwyn was always gonna be pushed to stay. Henry's had loads of champions over the years, but arguably never quite had what you'd call an all-time great. Horses like Ardross, Kris, Oh So Sharp, Reference Point, Indian Skimmer, Old Vic and Bosra Sham came close, but I'd love to see him have a Nijinsky or even a Sea The Stars before he gives the game up. |
|
By:
well oh so sharp is still the last triple crown winner and i can see that standing for many years to come !

Fair point, she was brilliant against Triptych at Epsom

Quoted on the Cecil website
A delighted Cecil said: “That was very good and he has done it easy. I hope he can come on for it and go on to better things. “We shall stay at a mile with him and look at races such as the Royal Lodge and the Racing Post Trophy.” |

Remember HRAC master that he is/was had a period where his colts didnt winter too well this being one of them.
|
|
By:
Space Cruiser won on the Ascot heath card, don`t think he added up to much.
|
|
By:
High Estate and Be My Chief other colts who didnt fulfill their 2 yo promise.
Vacarme was a hilarious episode (Richmond Stakes?) where Wilenstein, possibly the most temperemental owner in history threw his toys out of the pram after a clever Piggott ride didnt work out. |
|
By:
Perpendicular, owned by Howard de Walden ,won on the last day of the season ridden by Steve Cauthen at Donny,100/30 coming out of the gloom.
. |
|
By:
Anyone mentioned Cluade Monet .. had a 100 quid as a student a lot for me then and took 2s antepost at a Joe's the Dante ... it won at around 6s with the great Cauthen up and so my antepost career could only get better even though he won!

|
By:
i remember space cruiser, was meaning to put him up. what else did he do ?
|
|

Can`t remember ,but what is clear is that this thread and the old jumpers thread has made me smile and feel much better during a rather bad time for me

Russian Bond
Salse Midyan.....The list seems endless |

By:
russian bond finished 2nd to zilzal
|
|
By:
Carmelite House and Samoan were others who didn't really train on about that time. Thorn Dance aswell, although he hustled up Kerrera at Haydock as a 3yo.
Salse was a super consistent colt, though he was found out by Warning in the QEII |
