It wasn't anything to do with your ratings ffs. I would have said about Ouija Board or Snow Fairy had I been trying to contradict your silly opinion about the best Oaks winner in the last 30 years. What I wrote was about Dahlia, who never won the Oaks but did win the Irish Oaks and the King George and the fact that she beat the best horse I had SEEN win the Oaks and the quality of the opposition in her KG. A walk down memory lane.
Get over yourself for goodness sake. It certainly was not a contradiction or comment on what you thought about the last 30 years. |

I think if Enable runs on Saturday she will have an outstanding chance and I have backed her accordingly at some great prices but her form is not unbelievable and I was simply pointing that out.

I never said it was. I said "You came in with a contradictory post that she has a lot to prove, which you're entitled to do". If somebody says Enable has already proved herself a high class filly and somebody else says "her form at the moment isn't great" then that is a contradictory statement. Surely we don't have to go down the dictionary definitions again. As I said before, when your opinion is disagreed with or questioned you deliberately misrepresent it as saying you're not entitled to an opinion. |

What on earth are you on?
The truth is you contradict my posts continually. Then copy and paste lines to suit your point. Get over it. Move on ffs. If you don't want anyone to read or comment on your posts just say so. This is a forum ffs. To think everything I write has some sort of bearing on you is narcissism of the first order. This is supposed to a group of punters discussing forthcoming races. Putting forward their views, their bets and reasons and discussing individual points. No-one knows the answers until after the event that is the beauty of it. We lose some we win some. It is not an exam where you go around insulting others views and trying to downgrade the rest. |

As I pointed out, the qualities of the horses Enable has beaten, in my opinion, fall below what the qualities of the likely opposition on Saturday will bring to the table HOWEVER John Gosden, who is no-ones fool and considering he trains the horse I believe has the best chance of winning the race, excluding her, would not be running her unless he thought she had an outstanding chance. There is no need at all for Enable to run, as was reported after she won the Irish Oaks, with some saying the Arc and not the KG should be her target.

I've said I reckon Enable produced the best winning Oaks performance in more than 30 years but when put into context that's not really as bold a statement as it may seem. Possibly some Oaks winners were past their best by October but the truth is most of the winners just haven't been good enough to win an Arc. Ouija Board was one of only three winning ante post bets I've had in the race in 15 years and by far my favourite winner of the race, but I have Enable 7lbs higher than her winning performance. Even though I think Enable is the most likely winner if running there is a danger of her price becoming only little value. I'm sure she's a better filly than Taghrooda was but I'm also sure the horses I consider her main threats, Highland Reel and Ulysses, are better horses than Telescope. Regrettably I backed Telescope that day as I'd underrated Taghrooda going into the race.
If Ulysses can repeat his Eclipse form over 12f, and personally I think he can at least go close to it, then I'd have him only 3lbs behind Enable at the weights, with Highland Reel a further pound behind. The question is even if Ulysses has the stamina for 12f will he be able to do it on soft ground? Stoute is on record as saying the ground was too soft for him on debut, so I thought he might not run him in those circumstances but at the moment he seems to be running anyway. I'm not convinced by Stoute's excuse on debut as Ulysses didn't seem to have any problem when winning his maiden impressively on similar ground. He's by Galileo out of Light Shift, both horses who handled cut in the ground extremely well so if that counts for anything it shouldn't be an issue. As for Highland Reel, I think he should run very close to Ulysses on his best form. Doubts have also been raised about his ability to handle cut but while I'm not saying that's wrong I'm not absolutely convinced yet. More of a concern for me would be the two hard races he's just had. He's proved a very tough horse so far but all horses have a limit and it wouldn't be a total surprise if he runs a bit below his best. I don't rate Jack Hobbs in the same class as an older horse but I'll accept it if I'm proved wrong about that. So on my figures Enable has enough in hand to achieve a convincing win and there are some doubts about what I see as her chief rivals, but 3lbs only converts to about 1 and a half lengths on my scale over this trip so it's not something to get too carried away by. We've had the odd slowly run King George before, and 1 1/2 lengths can easily be negated by a disadvantaged position/trouble in running. At current prices I'd still back her on the day, hopefully she might drift out again, but if shortening much more I think any value would only be minimal. Even if winning, if either Ulysses or Highland Reel run to form I also think she'll probably have a taxing race. |
|
By:
Another factor is Enable only receives 14lbs compared to Taghrooda receiving 15lbs. 1lb extra obviously wouldn't have altered the Taghrooda result but for those of us who believe every pound counts it can make the difference between winning and losing if the race turns out to be harder fought than expected.

Sounds good F and though I disagree with the placed horses I expect Enable to prevail. Maverick Wave will make it a strong pace accompanied by Permian for the first mile followed by Highland Reel, because he lies handy and because he may try his usual mid race sprint, and Idaho who cannot be ridden for a finish. Behind these will be Jack Hobbs and Enable. Just before the home straight I guess Highland Reel would have made his break for home but and Jack Hobbs will be right behind him. Enable will go to the front approaching the home turn followed by Highland Reel, Idaho and Jack Hobbs in any order. Ulysses will be trying to get close and Permian will be beaten off. Highland Reel will drop away half way up the home straight and could be beaten by Idaho and Ulysses but Jack Hobbs and Enable will pull clear and finish first and second probably in that order. Hopefully in the other order. (Attention dual forecast backers).
Ulysses will sit behind this main group but will never be able to get in a serious challenge. If patiently ridden he may be able to run past the weakening Highland Reel. |

By:
*Enable and Jack Hobbs will be right behind him.

By:
From a punting perspective I'm still hoping Enable doesn't run. I'd have more confidence backing her than any other runner but even a hefty wager doesn't light my fire at this price in this instance and there will be other days for her. I would prefer to be backing Ulysses who, even though I have niggling doubts about him, I see as a far better value bet in the event of Enable not running.

Does the Arc still even carry the prestige it used to? Plus you have to worry about so much more over there, like the ground, travelling over, the draw (yes it's not as big a deal as it is made out but it has still cost horses the race, including Orvefre), size of the field, probably have better horses to beat etc.
The King George will most likely be a relatively small field and other than herself, in my opinion Enable would have one horse to beat (Jack Hobbs as I think he could improve for the trip and ground) to land a huge pot and be a King George winner. 5-6 weeks break then run in the Arc - seems pragmatic to me. I do not think Jack Hobbs is fully exposed as of yet and with horses like that I think it's pragmatic to take into account their previous odds in the market for potential future performance(s). It's not an exhaustive rule but he has hammered Highland Reel twice in the past so on the face of it, did the latter deserve to be 11/8 and Jack Hobbs 7/1? I haven't had a bet in the race just making the point that every horse has it's price in each race under different conditions. E.g. Ulysses was 9/2 in the Prince of Wales then 8/1 in a weak looking Eclipse. For the record, I think he is at his best over a strongly run 10 furlongs which is why I don't fancy him for the King George should he run. Figgis - I think you stated that you rated Jack Hobbs as an 8/1 chance for the KG, was that without Enable? |
|
By:
Of the worries that have one is Coolmore jumping Idaho off in the lead then dropping the anchor.
Buick is already jocked up on Jack Hobbs so I guess that puts Frontiersman out of the picture? Crowley on Ulysses and Frankie on Enable. |
|
By:
Swagger, yes that was without Enable. I just don't believe he's gone on from 3 to 4 to 5. Obviously I can't rule out that he'll come good but I'd say 8/1 covers that and his chance of winning. I was against Found for the same reason until unexpectedly to me she showed improved form on her seventh start as a 4yo, so after only two starts this year of course JH could progress. I had posted against Found a few times on here until the Irish Champion Stakes result when I changed my tune. If JH proves me wrong on Saturday I'll gladly concede the point. I have no interest in stupidly defending past opinions if I'm wrong or things change as I'm just concerned with getting it right in future. I'm sure if JH can win or even go close on Saturday I'd be interested in him next time.

Does the Arc still even carry the prestige it used to?
I've argued in the past that even though the Arc is favourably looked upon compared to the KG these days the winning performance often hasn't been better. Sure, there have been some great horses that won but the race comes at the end of the season, sometimes on soft ground, when many horses have had busy or hard campaigns in Britain and Ireland and are already past their best and/or unsuited to conditions. Also a few have been run at a less than satisfactory pace and trouble in running has occurred more often than in the KG. That said, looking at the list of recent winners I'd say it carries as much prestige as it ever has and UK/Ire runners look to have been better targeted at the race. |
|
By:
Without question Enable looked impressive in the Epsom and Irish Oaks but I have put my money where my mouth is ie backed JH and HR at big odds here, but laid Enable for small money as the last named is still not a certain runner. Even if Enable is a runner, at 2/1 she is no value given her form beating mediocre horses eg Alluringly and Rain Goddess, both only won maidens (one each) and no Group race.
However, if using her run behind Shutter Speed - herself had her limitations exposed in France - Enable would need to improve on her Irish Oaks run to match HR, JH and Ulysses. I'm certain if Enable had not beaten Rhododendron - 1st attempt at 12f - in the Epsom Oaks she'd not be fav for this race. Let's hope all the above mentioned horses turn up for this race; the winner will help to enlighten backers of the Arc which is a bit of a minefield given the absence of Almanzor on a racecourse yet. |
|
By:
The Arc is still the race. It´s the KG that has really suffered in recent years. Compare the last 3-4 runnings to previous years. It is not pretty, cause GB&IRE breeders don´t care about middle-distance races anymore. The French and Japanese stick to the Arc and the Germans only come with their elite talent, which they only produce sporadically.

When was Highland Reel big odds for this race?
|
|
By:
only been following the arc, since treve was winning it easily, don't really know much about the king George, no doubt the arc
has most of the top middle distance horses from all over the world and has the most prestige. would of preferred enable going for an easier target before a tilt at the arc, sounds like enable is a banker for this race, judging by peoples views on the race, has the makings of a vintage renewal this year. goodluck, will be watching with interest |

I think Ulysses wants fast ground. Would consider him a doubtful stayer IF it is slow ground and IF they go a decent gallop.

The wfa is the biggest factor surely- it amuses me that they've adjusted it so that whereas Taghrooda got 15lbs from the older colts, Enable now gets only 14lbs
- I assume that adjustment was data driven but it's surely unlikely to make any material difference. Everything looks in Enable's favour to me (assuming she shows up!) - if the ground is on the softer side the weight allowance becomes even more of a factor plus she's more likely to still be improving than the older horses.I would n't be using Shutter Speed's run in France to knock her form either, Gosden has dropped plenty of hints that events conspired against her that day (whilst being careful not to mention her jockey's inability to give her full assistance). |
|
By:
ReaseHeath, would you say the 1lb made no difference if Enable is beaten by, say, Highland Reel by a head?
![]() |
|
By:
No, of course not, but from memory Taghrooda won by 3 lengths +?
I just think the wfa scale generally favours the 3yos (the really good ones anyway!) - I've no evidence to prove that and I'm sure the change was data driven as I say.But how much data is there in terms of 3yos taking on their elders in Group Ones over 12 furlongs? |
|
By:
I think some of the decline in the King George is down to Coolmore. Now there's a surprise you may say and it may sound a bit crass but there are a few facts to back this comment up.
At the moment Coolmore have 4 entries for this race and I know they had several more than that a few weeks ago. Added to that Capri is a notable non runner as he was never entered. I suggest had the existing 4 entries been trained by someone else they could be runners along with a supplemented Capri. This is where a trainer like AOB can have a negative effect on British racing. He may have any number of horses in his yard capable of running but he will only run one or two. Had Douglas McArthur been trained by someone else would they run him here just as Permian may run? Coolmore have so many stamina horses suited to this race, as you can see from his big race and Derby entries, but they will not be running. If someone else trained Cliffs of Moher would he be running? I know some will say why run horses which are unlikely to win but that is what racing is all about and horses like Permian, well behind Capri and Douglas McArthur at Epsom, as a probable runner is evidence of that. |
|
By:

I agree. |
|
By:
Another thing to consider is that if there is a slow early pace then Enable's weight advantage will count for less than it would in a fast run event. Therefore it's in Gosden's interests to try to ensure a good gallop. If the Coolmore outfit use their heads then they'll want to minimise her weight advantage by aiming for the opposite. Of course she might still have the advantage of them in a sprint finish and win anyway but it would give them their best chance of upsetting her. The downside to a fast run race for Enable's connections is how much it will take out of her for the future.

By:
Apart from HR and Idaho one other AOB's charge that could play a significant role in this race would be Seventh Heaven but she's injured; Capri was gifted the Irish Derby courtesy of the imprudence of the other jocks - the Voltigeur will testify to that, I firmly believe, if he runs there. And as far as the 3 yr old colts are concerned they are much of a muchness.

The current betting on here: Enable 2.78, Highland Reel 3.8, Jack Hobbs 6.6, Idaho 7.4, Ulysses 15.5, Frontiersman 20, Permian 34.

yep, I guess if she has a really tough race they could skip the Yorkshire Oaks and go straight to Arc or prep in Prix Vermeille - getting ahead of myself a bit.
Anyway ,just had a quick look at the data - 2 3yo winners and 3 placed from 13 runners in the last 10 KG6 and QE2 renewals - the stats for 4yo+ I can find say 8W 7P 62R (looks wrong as the number of placed runners looks too low). The two 3yo winners were Taghrooda and Enable's daddy Nathaniel - both trained by Gosden. I can remember the Taghrooda race but I had to remind myself that Nathaniel beat animals as decent as Workforce and St Nicholas Abbey by 2.75 lengths and 4 lengths respectively in receipt of 12lbs. His task was made easier by the accident which befell poor Rewilding (I remember Gosden being absolutely brilliant in his comments to the media after the race that day). Before the race Nathaniel had won the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot having previously been beaten a head by Treasure Beach in the Chester Vase. I suppose you could argue about the level of the form but Enable has achieved more than Nathaniel had going into the race. |

It will also be interesting to see what the ground is like on Friday. Supposed to be dry tomorrow, some rain Wed and Thu but dry the rest of the week. The ground is currently described as soft but that could easily change at this time of year. In the last 5 years the ground has been described as good to soft twice on KG day, yet on both occasions the ground was certainly no worse than good.

I think the betting market ought to be 3/1 co fav between Enable, HR and JH.

really struggled to rate jack hobbs personally i've got his dubai run very inclusive ratings wise and have struggled to handicap him properly. i have also struggled with last years champion stakes where inflated ratings were rewarded to all runners but were in my opinion way above what they should of been...
i have to say i have jack hobbs pegged at a very low level group 1 wise and really he is a disappointing type considering the potential he showed as a 3 year old but for me he never really improved much from the dante, i know the ratings say he has but for me he isn't much better than that if this race were to be run on fast ground i certainly think highland reel would race the filly but the ground how it is rates his chances far less, i realise the soft ground will favour jack hobbs but have a feeling he will fail to please those that rate him so high have a feeling this years addition of the hardwicke stakes was a lot poorer than in recent times and although the winner did well to win especially the way he played up beforehand, his price however makes little appeal but he may improve on what he has shown so far in his career, he certainly never ducked the issue in the hardwiche i have struggled with ulysees as a horse...he has taken an age to learn to settle in his races but he looks to finally be learning how to drop the bit...the eclipse was a poor edition in my book however and was run at a horrible stop start gallop and i actually fancied the third a tad before the race, this shows what i thought of the horses running that day... anyway he was a game winner against the slightly quirky barney roy who carries his head slightly awkwardly and is still learning his trade anyway i get the feeling he might need the type of ride he got there and is stretching out here, although there does look like being pace on here, this is going to be run on different ground and although i have always liked him and his price is appealing, i didn't rate the eclipse that highly i still think this is tricky betting heat bar the filly but if she didn't run i will be looking outside the top of the market especially on soft ground...if the ground is ok i think highland reel would take a lot of beating but lets hope we get it soft so it opens up a can of worms ![]() |

By eliminating almost every horse from winning this race, one way or another, I think all you have done Harry is to realise that this is not a great bunch of top class 12f Group 1 horses.
It is true that Jack Hobb's credentials may not be outstanding in the grand scheme of things but given Highland Reel may struggle in a strongly run 12f Group 1 race on good ground, and given Ulysses has no 12f form good enough to prove he can win a strongly run 12f Group 1 race on good ground and given that the Idaho form through the horses he has beaten and been beaten by does not appear good enough to win a strongly run 12f Group 1 race on good ground then it becomes very clear that Jack Hobbs is the only horse remaining with the certain credentials to win a strongly contested 12f Group 1 race on good ground. I don't think I have ever stated that Jack Hobbs is an outstanding Group 1 horse only that given the likely going, the course details, the pace angle and the guaranteed ability to stay the trip in a strongly run 12f Group 1 race that he has better credentials than the alternatives no matter how many ways you reorganise their deck chairs. Excluding Enable of course who we don't yet know enough about. |

By:
i have also struggled with last years champion stakes where inflated ratings were rewarded to all runners but were in my opinion way above what they should of been...
I agree with that harry. The race was slowly run early on and as often is the case in slowly run events it leads to a problem with form ratings. The front two had showed superior form previously but because of the slow pace the form ended up more compressed than it otherwise would have been. The form ratings compilers are left with the choice of downgrading the winner, which they are usually reluctant to do, so end up rating the winner correctly but giving inflated ratings to those behind, such as My Dream Boat. i have to say i have jack hobbs pegged at a very low level group 1 wise and really he is a disappointing type considering the potential he showed as a 3 year old but for me he never really improved much from the dante, i know the ratings say he has but for me he isn't much better than that I also agree with that. Even though I'm rating his races using different methods to you I came to pretty much the same conclusion. After the Dante I have him improving only 1lb on that in his subsequent races as a 3yo and older. |

By:
I am not rating's or a time person but I would have thought that judging a horse on his 10f form when running in a 12f race could be a waste of time but that is probably why I am not a rating's person. Hopefully, we will find out about that on Saturday.
Similarly, assessing Highland Reel's ability using time as a model based partly on a strongly run mid section of the race when the way he runs his races, we allowed to, is that he puts in a strongly run mid section of a race, unlike in almost all other races, so using that as a model could be misleading. We may find out a little more about that on Saturday as well. I am a theories person. I try to work out what the optimum requirements are for a horse and take it from there. Sadly often these theories are never put to the test because the optimum requirements never materialise. But then sometimes everything clicks. Highland Reel's optimum requirements, I believe, are fast ground, 12f and an uncontested lead. Ulysses optimum requirements I believe are 10f, fast ground and a strong pace to run at. The only opinion I have about Idaho is that the trip and ground and pace will be fine but is his form good enough? So my theories about Saturday are as follows. I don't think Highland Reel can win a good 12f Gr1 run at a strong pace. I don't think Ulysses can win a strongly run 12 Gr1 run at a strong pace. I don't think Idaho (Harzand) form is strong 12f Gr1 form. It is beginning to look like the 3 year old colts form is not up to scratch. I do think Jack Hobbs requires a strongly run 12f Gr1 race to show his best. So the question is who will the race be run to suit? All too often, like in the July Cup, you go into a race hoping for certain requirements to achieve the result you hope for but they do not materialise. Saturday I hope and expect my theories to be put fully to the test. Warts and all and may the best horse win. |
|
By:
I think if HR is allowed to set a steady and not searching pace HR could quicken at the 2f or 1f pole and nick the race whilst the other principals could be involved with scrummaging at the crucial moment similar to the Irish Derby. Neither will HR want a slow pace as that would play into the hands of JH and Ulysses; Enable is the unknown as she has only beaten maiden and not Group winners at this distance excluding Rhododendron who clearly did not stay in the Epsom Oaks - she was cruising 2f out - according to Moore and AOB.
I hope all the principal runners turn up to give the racegoers a proper spectacle. I might even lay Enable again if she goes off shorter in the race. |
|
By:
Judging Jack Hobbs strictly on his 12f form and times he's been equal at both. There's no doubt he stays 12f very well but his Irish Derby form just won't cut it here unless he can improve on that with age like the wfa scale allows for. His Meydan form is equal to his Irish Derby form, he didn't have to improve a jot in real terms on his Irish Derby form to win it. It was a weak race in the end with Postponed and Highland Reel not showing their best. Highland Reel ran the race just like the other races he's dictated from the front, the published sectionals show that. So the pace couldn't be blamed for his showing that day. You either have to blame the ground, or like me just put it down to an off day. He's never won first time out and usually shows his best form in the summer.
The fact is that wherever Highland Reel, or more likely his jockey, prefers to inject the pace he has won a 12f race run in a fast overall time as an older horse, which is something Jack Hobbs is yet to do. If anything wants to go faster early than Moore thinks is ideal for HR then it's almost sure he'll allow them to give him a lead. There's no reason HR can't be ridden to go the same pace behind the leader as when he has been ridden to lead, unless people think he's going to get in a silly pace battle up front but he hasn't shown those tendencies before so there's no reason why he would now. Jack Hobbs most definitely has the stamina, but that's not enough, he also needs to have the speed to win a proper all age Gp1 race and up to now he hasn't shown he has that speed. |
|
By:
Jack Hobbs has run 4 times at 12f winning 3 easily and finishing 2nd in the Derby to Golden Horn. On the other hand Highland Reel has run 11 times over 12f and has been beaten 6 times. May I suggest that judging Jack Hobbs on the evidence available from those four runs can only be guessing whereas with 11 runs a pretty firm idea of what suits Highland Reel can be made. I know JH ran over 12f at Newmarket but he fractured his hip at some stage during the race and was pulled so naturally that cannot be included.
