What a fascinating Derby it is this year! For my money Awtaad has every chance of improving on better ground - Sire and Damsires best ones on the whole were good ground horses. If I were a connection (lol) I'd be watching the Epsom forecast carefully ...

hope you didn't back him for the derby lordnoise.  From a visual point of view yesterday there was no way it was ever going to stay 1m 4f yet alone supplemented for the derby.  he has now been confirmed to go straight to Ascot

Why do you hope you're proven wrong if you haven't backed him and think he won't act?  Odd thing to say.

If he bets as much as he posts I, for one, would certainly like to have a look at his Derby book.  Any chance of a c+p, GIG?

Because you're clogging up this forum with, what I suspect is, utter **** me old fruit.  Haven't quite made up my mind though so wondering if you're backing these very strong opinions and whether I should take you seriously like certain others I do on ante-post. Do tell! Silly

you can say i'm talking '**** my old fruit' which is fine, everyone's opinion is respected.   I too neither care for ppl's opinions but at the end of the day care for only ppl's results and strike rates.  If I get a success rate of 60-70% year on average on betting that's a success. anything under 50% is a failure.   As to the other comment I do not gamble thousands per race thankyou, the most I'll have on any race is 300 pounds liability.

The situation with The Gurkha was pretty obvious post the dismal performance of AFB in the Irish 2000g; Coolmore needs a crack miler for Royal Ascot eg St James's Palace Stakes who could take on the likes of Galileo Gold (GG) and Awtaad; Air Force Blue (2nd last again) will go sprinting, and possibly engage with Limato and Company in the Darley July Cup.

60-70% success rate - if you can achieve that backing antepost at double figure prices then I take it you are posting all this from your yacht anchored in Monaco harbour.Crazy

what irrated me was that apart from PP, all bookies had this as 3-1 fav for the derby without a run.  those uneducated about the situation stood no chance, just blatant cheating by the bookies

more like canoe on the thames mate.  don;t gamble massive amounts like most on here, otherwise wouldn't be able to sleep at night, just enough to pay the bills and cover some luxury items...

Harry, given Barzalona has ridden him in all starts to date I would assumer he'll keep the ride, but I guess it depends if Buick or Doyle have a particularly good strike-rate at Epsom>? Anyone...
By:

When: 22 May 16 19:43
doyle has a good strike rate at the track 15% 29% 2 year olds and buick is 13% but ok

ye i would of thought he would keep ride just wasn't sure he was a retained rider for them, just trying to clarify it really, although barzalona will almost certainly keep it just wanted to be sure tbh

ah just googled it, he is retained by them in europe so forget all that he will ride himGrin

I'm very pig headed (especially when the price is right) so notwithstanding his run style on saturday I've just had a little more at 200 on Awtaad for the Derby. The St James Palace Stakes is obviously preferred but nothing Angus Gold said today confirms he absolutely deffo runs at Ascot. Theres no rain to speak of in the forecast over the next 2 weeks and on that basis and with an eye on whos confirmed to run he'll be left in the Derby until the last minute imo.

i thought about ulysses at 33-1 and even though this year's derby is very open I thought no chance, and I still do - that unless the horse is pumped full of androstendione or something.  It's just a pity i missed out on the trade opp but clearly ppl are getting on stoute for his reputation as a trainer to train Derby winners rather than the horse itself?

His maiden win beating 3 unraced colts was impressiveLaugh
By:

When: 23 May 16 12:43
Ulysses would have to improve around 26lbs on RPR's  to win an average Derby a feat which has been achieved twice in the past 27 years. Shaamit improved an extraordinary 37 lbs in 1996 whilst Lammtara in 1995 almost did it when improving 23 lb.So, a big ask then for Ulysses. At 9/1 I wouldn't be a backer.

its a shame this thread has turned into dismissive and derogative comments in regards certain trails and certain horses running in the derby, it would of been nice to share views on certain races/trails and different horses running but it just hasn't been possible this year

i was quite interested in talking about that colt you dismiss with contempt geoff

Harry apologies it was a bit tongue in cheek highlighting the fact waltzing over 3 unraced colts doesnt justify being 4th fav in The Derby.
Yes the horse that beat him @ Leicester was impressive @ Newbury. That Leicester race has thrown up a placed horse in The Derby in the past as I think Terimon 2nd to Nashwan ran in the same maiden.
It seems nowdays the requirements to be @ the front of The Derby market you have to be a maiden as a 3 year old and get beat on your 3 year old debut and not even start fav(The Gurkha/US Army Ranger/Wings Of Desire/Ulysess et al)
Yes hes a fabulously bred colt open to any amount of improvement but i was brought up on Derbys with the likes of Mill Reef/Grundy/The Minstrel /Troy and probably still living in the past as i like battle hardened colts with form  in the book.
It seems he has become a genuine contender on the back of a stablemates injury.
All of the above doesnt mean to say he cant win The Derby as i said earlier open to improvement however in what is going to be  a max field and probably the most wide open Derby since Troy i am taking on the inexperienced colts with potential as the bais of my book.
@ 9/1 im a layer.

Some posters do grind my gears by making assertions without much or any reasoning.
However, one racing journalist could give weight away and beat them several lengths hard held in the "Bullsh1t & Cliche Stakes" Laugh

I am afraid I am fully dismissive of Ulysses’s chances in the Derby and would think come King Edward VII Stakes we will see a much more formidable colt. With Ulysses being a son of Galileo, out of Light Shift, an Oaks winner, it does make him a strong Epsom contender on breeding but you would have to admit on what we have going for us, only breaking his duck at the third attempt, albeit a Newbury maiden by eight lengths, it is only really the colts’ breeding (and trainer) that could legitimately be the basis for any notion that he is up to winning the Derby. I think it the case of how satisfying it must be for the Niarchos family to have a runner in an open year that comes from a family that for generations have raced successfully for them.
By:
lordnoise
When: 23 May 16 14:29
Looking at the last 20 years High-Rise ran 3 times before his Derby and improved his RPR by 16 to win it which is more than any other of the 6 horses that had had just 3 prior runs. Add a notional 16 to Ulysses existing 99 RPR and 115 would still leave him short of Sir Percys 118 (lowest rated winner in 20 years). Maybe doable given the trainer and enough in an open year but like others 9/1 isn't for me.

It is less than two weeks to the event: come on, nail your colour to the mast, what is going to win, and why?

I'm going for Us Army Ranger as he's a well bred/balanced horse, will handle Epsom, stays and opens to massive improvement.

Sir Percy was another of the battle hardened Derby winners who had to knuckle down and pull out all the stops.
I couldnt imagine Sir Pecy would have won his Derby without that seasoned conditioning.
