from the james willoughby article  "But this isn’t the only part of the problem. It seems to me that the steady increase in the number of Pattern races has provided too many options for the connections of top horses. Top golfers and tennis players can’t avoid each other in the majors of their particular sport, but racehorses can."

Absolutely agree with Brig in this case. The handling of horses by Coolmore is verging on the embarrassing. Is it because they have so many good un's it hardly matters? Would you ever have seen Sir Henry give Tapestry the sort of campaign AOB has?

one the subject of Coolmore the AP lists for next year are impossible to have a bet in with any certainty as they dominate the top 5 in the derby and 4/6 at the top of the market in the Guineas. I know they have the best horses but its extremely frustrating, at least with the Hannon horse you know he will at least be aimed at the guineas.

Agreed FA. It is not great for the sport is it? Not much we can do about it though.

It's strange how my own views on the American model of racing does change,I could not understand the beauty in qualifying races when younger, now the idea makes perfect sense, they can avoid but then if they want the main prize they must meet.

The politics of the international arena of racing is another matter, dark ,confusing, and with many private companys  trying to sell their own interests,I am not sure this is for the good of racing or if it works in expanding a new fan base? I think the Bloodstock, Breeding industries would be better served with outlined internation main events, with qualifying factors, winners of Group1 races at that distance?(not brazilian)etc, the argument for where these main events(end prizes) should be run would be a problem, but a moving from one country to another or sharing is one idea.

Excuse my poor use of languageCry

Basically racing Worlwide could do with a end of season Olympic style event(one big end meeting),be shared and moved on a yearly basis,Group and listed winners at the distance qualify to run, some movement of one or more meetings from the months of october would be desirable, these could be run at an earlie date. Then the World watches the best against the best at the distance(it may be pie in the sky but I can dream)

Good morning MJ. Too many seperate vested interests to gain a consensus. If some sort of European Cup type structure could be organised then the flat season could end a bit like Cheltenham and Aintree but the nature of the weather and going at theend of the flat season would play to significant a part. It would need to be run in September so Champions day, Irish Champions day and Longchamp would be against it so what we have is likely to be the best there is.
The Pattern commitee is reviewing the current system and although I don't see the number of Group 1 races being brought in line with the number horses with Group 1 ability they may at least put a cap on it for a while. We will have to wait and see.
I have heard it mooted that the current Group 1 races should be graded into Premiership and Championship type grades but I'm sure the racecourses or breeders will stand for that one.

Good morning brigust, I understand the problems of race dates, but this could be easily be organied with plenty of thought and debate,For me this is want the true racing fan wants(not all may agree?),at the minute we have the Breeders ,the Arc ,and  Ascot, surely these could get together and start talks on the possible benefits? The season may have to start a little earlier(but most have all weather tracks)

The idea makes so much appeal too me, a two or three day event? Tourism ,TV, no losers ,no watering down of our great sport.

I'm not particularly against the current calender. I wonder why Ireland didn't think it would be better to have a mid July festival with big prize money rather than a September one which was always going to struggle to attract the best horses from the UK due to the St Leger, Arc and Champions day etc. I really like the Arc meeting and Champions day has been a broad success. There is likely to be 50,000 on the 18th up from 30,000 ish the inaugural day. It is steadily growing in popularity. The breeders cup for me is a bit of a side show being so late at night and with a few of our best staying at home because of the travelling distance etc. I would much rather an Arc winner than a BC Mile or Turf if i was lucky enough to have the choice!

----------------

Do they? Dylan Thomas was in 2007. Duke of Marmelade was in 2008. After that we already talking about SNA and Cape Blanco. When was the last time AOB has done anything in the Arc, KG, Champion Stakes, Dubai World Cup, Japan Cup, Melbourne Cup. Pick any of the truly prestigous international races with the biggest purses. The only race outside the UK they have done well in recently is the BC Turf. Australia ducked the KG, the Arc, probably the Champions Stakes, too. That´s according to RPR the 2nd best horse in the world in 2014. Three Gr.1 wins, in one race he ran against two horses. In another he ran against four.

Hello Fallen Angel,

The sport is being watered down by the unreal growth expectancy, racing not being governed at all, todays racing worldwide is just a mirror of the Banking disaster that we have witnessed.

With regards to the champion stakes theres certainly value to be had .How Free Eagle can be 2/1  9/4 beggars belief.
What has he actually achieved?
Was his comeback win in Ireland a better performance than Cirrus Des Aigles beating of dual Arc winner Treve in the Ganay(plus many other performances) or Australia obvious doubt about running hence price.
Or the The Grey Gatsbys Irish Champion defeat of Australia
Or Kingston Hills 2nd in Derby Leger win or Arc 4th?
A 7l beating of Elleval who was beaten by 2/3 rds of the field in his previous 5 races doesnt warrant favouritism in this race despite how impressive.
An ante post lay of around 2s is a must.

Agree with what your saying geoff form wise, but he is full of potential, and has a great turn of foot. The time of the race compared to the Australia Great Gatsaby race. I have backed him at a nice price and would back against him for a saver, if I could work out whos going to turn up on the day.

I thought I read Ryan earlier in the week quoted as saying TGG won't go if it's soft? (will try to find link).

Well done to those who have CDA at 4/1 or better, he looks a tough nut to crack and his chances keep getting enhanced by potential rivals dropping out.

It definitely looks like being soft but I could n't find any recent examples of Ascot racing on heavy so hopefully it will be no worse than soft, still very much interested in Western Hymn on the day if that's the case.

here we go, from Wednesday's Racing Post (dug out paper copy).

Ryan: 'We'll have to look at the ground and it's too early to say.It looks like being soft and we'll see what we'll do early next week. We're not going to run him on soft. If he does n't run he's finished for the season.'

The going at Ascot was on Sunday soft, good to soft in places, and there is little likelihood of it drying out significantly before Saturday.

Clerk of the course Chris Stickels said on Sunday: "We had another 2.5mm of rain on Saturday and it's due to remain unsettled. We've got a band of rain coming in this evening and there are possible sharp showers most days. I don't see it drying up much."

agree, just to clarify when I stated I could n't find recent examples of Ascot racing on heavy, I meant on the flat.

Just checked and they raced on Heavy in February over the sticks but changed the going description to Soft (Heavy in places) after the first race. I'm pretty sure that was around the time of the infamous floods when people were getting evacuated from their homes a few miles up the road.

Would n't pretend to be an expert but I thought the common consensus is that it drains very well these days. Based on the forecast (which as you pointed out can change) I'd say they'll be calling if soft by the off time.

CONDITIONS at Ascot for Champions Day on Saturday look set to be pretty testing after 25mm of rain on Sunday night turned the going to heavy, soft in places (from soft, good to soft in places).

Clerk of the course Chris Stickels warned on Sunday the forecast for the week gave little hope of the ground drying out significantly, but it looks like one of Britain's biggest racedays will be run on ground softer than many would want.
