I doubt Shamkala will come over Bairn. She is favourite for the Prix de Diane.

"She is a filly who is extremely easy to position in a race, she can go in front or behind," said Royer-Dupre. "She is among our very biggest hopes. It was a piece of work but a race nonetheless. She will go straight to the Prix de Diane from here."

not so good brandy, 6's with koral and 7's with laddies, it did cross my mind that it was too big on here. thanks for the update though. cheers.

Hopefully all this wet weather will dry up in time for Epsom.
Would not want to see the Big meeting run on soft ground myself Plain.
The Ire 1000gns winner won well on Sunday & looks like a filly in need of a step up in trip imo (run off her feet for most of the race) her stamina won the day in the end on that ground. She did get a tough race on heavy ground tho, with that in mind, the Oaks is under 2wks away for her (if she runs) that short gap after such a tough race in a Classic would concern me. We shall see.

Yes, the bairn, noone is talking about her because connections have stated she wont come over, but she was left in at the latest stage and has slowly shortened on here. I doubt she would run myself, but stranger things have happened!

Apparently AOB may run 5. Draw is going to be crucial here. Cry

Main messages to take out of today? 1) It was surprising to hear Aidan O'Brien fail to mention Marvellous at the top of his pecking order for the Irish Oaks. 2) We're shaping up to have pretty big fields in both the Derby and the Oaks this year - a lot of the big-priced horses do seem likely to line up. 3) Hamdan Al Maktoum is happy to run both Taghrooda and Tarfasha in the Oaks, if going conditions suit them both - it sounds like neither would appreciate anything worse than good to soft. 4) David Simcock presented a good case for backing Madame Chiang in the Oaks, especially if conditions remain testing. Indeed, if at least one of the Hamdan Al Maktoum pair came out, it could make her a very interesting bet. 5) If the apocryphal gallop in which Geoffrey Chaucer beat Australia really did happen, then Aidan O'Brien wasn't there at the time.

Dermot Weld on Tarfasha: "If the going was good to yielding, I think we'd run, but if it was softer than that I think we'd wait for either Royal Ascot or the Irish Oaks. She's a very balanced filly but a good mover and I don't think she'd want soft ground. At the moment, Sheikh Hamdan is happy for us to run both (ie her and Taghrooda) but that's subject to the ground being suitable."

Clerk of the course Andrew Cooper up next. No rest for the wicked. Or the still-hungry. I can see them taking away the sausages.

Cooper: "I've just had an update from the Met Office and we're looking at it being unsettled without necessarily seeing heavy volumes of rain. It sounds like we'll see some rain, but hopefully it won't be heavy stuff. Sandown is quite a quick-draining course but it's nothing compared to here - if you get a dry, warm day with some wind you can easily move a whole point in the going range and go from good to soft to good. At the moment, the softest-ground Derby I have taken care of was High Chaparral's in 2002 when it was good to soft, soft in places, when there was rain around throughout the week, but you learn that every Derby is different and, as I say, a dry day or two can make a lot of difference.

A Fascinating field for the Oaks, I cant think of any mid-distance 3yo filly missing, they are all there, loads of improvers and now Marvellous is a standout on form, from her classic win.

Like every 12F classic, it pays to look at middle-distance breeding to point the way in the last stamina sapping 2F, and to have the stayers on your side.  Look forward to dissecting the form and breeding this week, to see if my 25/1 bet on Taghrooda and saver on Marvellous at 7/1 are the full play or not.

I cannot think of a Classic, at least in the 10 years I have been betting, where 4 horses have been supplemented for it. Probably tells you how open it is, on paper.

Loads! Valyra won the Prix Diane after being supplemented.

The King George is not a Classic but Nathaniel won that after being supplemented.

I think Great Heavens was supplemented for the Irish Oaks a couple of years ago too. Basically, if connections are paying out supplementary fees, then their runners should be payed close attention.

had an e/w bet on Momentus @66s and win
on here (@120/140s).Thought she ran a cracker
at Lingfield on only her 2nd start. The winner
has been supplemented(Honour Bound),I think.
Was doing all her best work at the end in that
trial and should act around Epsom after that.
With normall improvement can see her outrunning
those odds.

Looks like a bucket load of rain tomorrow which is frustrating as I quite fancy Flintshire at a price for the Coronation. Surely Marsh Daisy will be shorter by Thursday

17 runners now.

Marvellous in stall 2. That has made her task a whole lot harder.

Can't see it being a disadvantage for Madame Chiang. She will surely be dropped out the back and held up wherever she is drawn. It's obviously a risky strategy but there should hopefully be a decent pace on with at least Volume and Dazzling in the field and then she will need luck. If she is beaten it won't be because of the draw. It might be more of an issue for Marvellous.

I posted this table on the horseracing forum and was asked to replicate it here, basically it shows number of winners from each stall position over Epsoms 1m4f trip in double figure fields since the turn of the century.  I posted it to highlight the poor draw that Marvellous has been given:-

    stall        expected        actual        runs
    1        6.7        0        90

None from stall 1 is quite significant I would say and only 2 from stall 2.

There have been a few hard luck stories down the years, most recently The Fugue who was in stall 2 and got chopped up in-running. That's the difficulty.

What does expected and actual stand for in the table?

Do you think if Talent had been drawn 2 yards to the other side, she would not have won last year?

This is from Ralph Beckett's blog after he won the Oaks last season.

A fortnight ago I wrote that I hoped this article would 'write itself', and in many ways it does, but where to start? As some of you know, we won The Oaks last Friday with Talent, but we also trained the second, the better fancied Secret Gesture.

Going into the race I was certain that we would win with Secret Gesture. She was thriving at home, and had been easily the most impressive trial winner. Of her rivals at the head of the market, Moth had been campaigned as though Ballydoyle had thought she was a miler,Liber Nauticus looked one paced in the Musidora, and the unexposed Banoffee had shown signs of temperament in the first quarter of her easy Cheshire Oaks win.

Our problem was that Secret Gesture drew stall one. Normally you wouldn't think that would be a problem in a twelve furlong race, However the statistics say that in 162 races run over course and distance since 2000 ,only two winners were drawn one! Furthermore the last Oaks winner drawn one was Bireme, 33 years previously.

This presented a tactical problem, should Jim Crowley ride her positively from the stalls and get into a good position...or should he drop her out and ride her for luck? We walked the course Beforehand, and decided to be positive. In the race itself it went partly to plan, she sat just in behind the pace, except that Jim didn't want to be on the rail, but she travelled really well and when the gap came over two furlongs out he pushed her through. At this point I thought we would win, but she had used up a deal of energy getting into position , and it told, though I was flabbergasted to see Talent flying down the outside and pull away to win easily. Whenever we have had two runners in a race I have found it impossible to watch both , so I had stopped watching Talent when she got into a barging match at the back of the field, at the top of the hill!

Exactly that Brandy, expected and actual (result)

It's bit flippant to say 2 yards either way, as that does not consider the fact you have another rider and horses on your outside/inside. Anyway, evidence is there if you want to use it. Basically it's a tactical and traffic issue.

Do you think Secret Gesture was beaten by her draw last year?

I'm pretty sure Talent could have been drawn anywhere and won last year's renewal.

I can understand why the figures put people off but people say the same thing about Chester every year.

Track position is vital at Chester, as it is at Epsom, and it is easier to get a good position from a lower draw. However that doesn't necessarily mean a horse from a higher stall can't get good track position and win.

Sorry that post sounds confrontational. It's not meant to be. Good luck with whoever you back. Personally think there are lots of reasons to oppose Marvellous and the draw hasn't done her any favours.

expected is how many winners you'd expect when you add up the s.p. percentages which are normalised to 100% for each race
By:
grendel
When: 04 Jun 14 15:11
the 2 winners from stall 2 were Aiken 25/4/12 10/3 in a 10 rnr race and Eswarah in 2005 Oaks (12 rnrs)
By:
thornton reed
When: 04 Jun 14 15:11
Grendel, do you know what the statistics would be for 'percentage of horses beaten' rather than just win?
