It was my best subject, funnily enough.

I'm just asking.

Mmm. Impressive.

As a matter of interest, have you had more on SNA than you had on Hurricane Fly for this year's Champion Hurdle? It's just that you seemed to "forget" the HF bet for a time come November. My view is that people don't forget backing a horse but might forget that they've said they've backed a horse that they haven't actually backed.

I backed several horses last April when I decided the Champion Hurdle form was below averageas the prices were good having decided this. Hurricane Run was one of those. You will ALWAYS have wastage in antepost betting, the rest of your positions need to compensate for that .. and mine do.
Now back to discussing the horses eh.

When was Hurricane Run being targeted at the Champion Hurdle? That's a new one.

..Fly. I had the other in the Arc 7/1 :)

Kirk - I take it 'four figures' = £10.00 ;)

Seta has probably been backed after a Daily Telegraph article in which Keiran Fallon said that she was a very exciting prospect and to ignore the Doncaster run completely.

If Kirk looks hard enough in a couple of years time he might see his wonder horse Steinbeck coming up the Cheltenham hill,on the way to being 2nd in the champion hurdle.

OK, back to discussing the horses. I'll do it over on the Zaynar Champion Hurdle thread to avoid knocking this Guineas one off course.

I don't think any of the ante-post market 'moves' in the last few days are in any way significant. It happens every year, the bookmakers are simply reviewing their books and realise that there isn't a great deal of strength in depth among the contenders. The 1000 Guineas looks particularly uncompetitive this year (assuming that the likes of Rosanara, Termagant etc don't turn up), so it's hardly surprising that the bookmakers have decided to start taking evasive action by trimming the odds of some of the main contenders. The recent price cuts by the sponsors (SJ) are not necessarily a result of horses being backed. Same with Power. I'd take more notice if there was a real plunge on a horse, but it's too early in the year for that kind of thing. But my advice is to take a price now if you fancy something and haven't backed it yet. The odds of likely fancied runners will continue to be trimmed between now and the trials in April.

You should be on already however if not they will start shortening up the weekend after Cheltenham.

I've got a few quid on Canford Cliffs for the 2000 Guineas. Was very impressed with it last season and when Richard Hughes said it was the most exciting horse he had had the priveledge to ride, I started putting a couple of quid on from time to time. Has anybody heard anything on how the horse has been throughout the winter and is expectations still as high. Is the fav expected to run, seen a few posts that it might be pulled out for other targets.
1st time poster.
Cheers.

Kirk St Moritz

Thanks for that, excellent reading and very interesting. I don't profess to know to much about horses breeding etc but from what I've read there are serious doubts as to if Canford Cliff's will get the mile. It's also mentioned on here that the odds of the more fancied runners should tumble in price after the Cheltenham Festival. If they tumble, should I be laying Canfor Cliffs to guarantee a profit either way or bite the bullet and keep putting on a few quid here and there.

Classic markets move for St Nicholas stablemates

PPWRhas reported interest in two stablemates of last season's champion two-year-old St Nicholas Abbey for both the Classics for which he is ante-post favourite, the Stan James 2,000 Guineas and Investec Derby.

In the Guineas, for which St Nicholas Abbey remained Power's 3-1 favourite, his Aidan O'Brien-trained stablemate Steinbeck was trimmed to 9-1 (from 10), along with another of last season's leading two-year-olds, Canford Cliffs.

St Nicholas Abbey also remains Power's 9-4 market leader for the Derby, but the Group 1-winning stablemate Jan Vermeer, runaway winner of the Criterium International at Saint-Cloud in November, was cut to 9-1 (from 12) on Tuesday.

A spokesman for Paddy Power said on Tuesday evening: "We have laid good money on Jan Vermeer in the Derby. In fact he has been the subject of a number of bets in the last week.

"The moves in the Guineas are not so significant but we have seen interest in Steinbeck."

Jan Vermeer is now Paddy Power's clear second-favourite behind St Nicholas Abbey, winner of last season's Racing Post Trophy.

GAVT I would wait now you are on him to see how the Greenham goes it will let you know how likely he is to stay the extra furlong.
By:
ben10
When: 02 Feb 10 22:37
If you want to trade maybe do so after the Greenham which most will argue he should get trip wise. An impressive performance there (every chance as Hannon gets them ready and the experience of winning at that trip is important to his Guineas chances) and he should be much shorter. The worry would be they turn round and decide not to go to the Guineas if he barely stays that trip. Up to you how you play it but you must think him a Guineas horse you must think stamina isn't an issue so I'd wait until after the Greenham.

money for any horse at this time of year means very little. lets wait till the end of march and see where the money is going, that will give you a better idea of what we can expect.

Thanks for that mate, much appreciated. Last time I put a few ante post bets on like this was when we got a bit of info on Katie Nowaite to win the Camridgeshire I think it was.Think most of Scotland cleaned up that day when Katie romped home. Long time ago now but the same source also got us a tip for a horse called Vollata which if memory serves me correctly won on its debut at 25s. Only reason I'm backing Canford Cliffs though is that it impressed me so much last season on it's 2 runs in the uk. Don't think the French track suited it, so prepared to forgive it that run. It wasn't beat by much though and with Richard Hannon reportedly more than happy with it's progress over the Winter then that'll do for me.
By:
zilzal1
When: 02 Feb 10 23:08
CC has had a very light preparation for a Hannon two year old, he's hardly shy of running them six or more times in their juvenile career, so it may be wise not to judge the trainers usual methods when summing up his prospects for a three year old.

Dont try to suppress others freedom to discuss antepost on here. You may want to stay away until March yourself and let everyone else who wants to discuss it discuss it.

Katy Nowaitee - now that brings back good memories. I had a share in a rubbish horse (Marjeune) at Peter Harris's at the same time and it was stabled in the box next door to Katy.

The whole stabl had lumped on Katy for that seasons Lincoln at 20/1-25/1 and she went and missed the cut by one :(
She ran in the consolation race and hosed up off top weight - but was only around 6/1 best price.

She then went straight to the Cambridgeshire and made all the running up the far rail all on her own - happy days :D

Steinbeck HAS NOT shown a turn of foot required to win a guineas so for me will be an excellent lay at 10 or less. And may not even run in the race...Kirk, do yourself a favour and choose another.

Does a horse have to show a turn of foot to win the Guineas ?
Entrepreneur, Island Sands, Kings Best,**ney Rebel, Golan, did they show a turn of foot as 2yos ?

Only Spbet left going 12-1 Steinbeck , and they wont let you have much on, everyone else 10-1.

Skybet only 14-1 about Fencing Master, they were the shortest 16-1 about STS this time last year.

one horse has shown a real classy turn of foot and also over the guineas trip,I think also you know who,Steinbeck if he does run will be left well behind, you can say what you like he is the one to beat.............and you all know it!And as for Canford Cliffs if he trains on and runs to the top of his form he will get a minor place.
By:

When: 03 Feb 10 18:33
Zilzal , what is on this years list that earned the tag quickened ?
By:
push
When: 03 Feb 10 18:43
It is an interesting theory the word QUICKENED as Zilzal pointed out the above Guineas winners did earn the quote Quickened as 2yos. Two horses that did not earn that quote as 2yos were last years Guineas 1st and 2nd. Still it looks to be a fair pointer.
By:

Does this theory apply to fillies as well? Doubt Natagora quickened away

On that basis Awzaan never officially quickened in any of his races.

Sure as hell looked like he was quickening to me :^0
By:

When: 03 Feb 10 18:53
Zilzal is correct with the 3 he selected ( thanks) . Xtension at Goodwood , Beeethoven Dewhurst and Awzaan at Newbury , did not earn the quote QUICKENED.
By:
TIROL1982

has a horse got to be mentioned by so called expert race readers as quickened? Poppycock. Most guineas winners have to show speed just to get into contention, BUT the best quicken twice to put the race to bed.
Last year STS and the runner up quickened , with STS quickening again to win the prize.
My namesake Tirol went to the front on the rise to the post and showed an excellent 2nd burst of speed. When has Steinbeck shown he can quicken? In Kirks Dreams!

Tirol, imo its not a pre requisite , merely a guide, and a informative one imo, by its description it shows a animal that possesses a attribute that can get a horse out of a unpromising position, Kings Best being the most glaringly obvious in the last ten years.

btw, you were fortunate to be born a year after Zilzal :-)
