Fastbearform - I walked every yard of the course, the ground was genuine good to soft ground, soft in places. It was soft on the far side of the top bend with surface water lying to make it sloppy, there were some softer patches on the far straight, and there was one heavier patch on the bottom corner where the surface went over the toes of my wellies. It is an interesting project though, not only trying to calculate the going from time, but then trying to calculate the fitness of an individual horse on that basis - is it necessary as I think you already want to know the result you want to get to. I said on this thread last season that IC was hugely underated - I say to now he still is.

Nice to meet you on Thursday Bobby. I also enjoyed a good Sunderland related natter with one of the owners of The Cockney Mackem. His horse hosed up didn't it.
I'll send you my email address so I can get a bit more info. on syndicates if you don't mind. |

I had the pleasure of being Bobby's guest at Perth on Wednesday - his enthusiasm and knowledge shines through, even more than it does on this forum - and that's saying something.
A couple of personal observations about Perth: rain at the track seems to me to make more unexpected difference (as compared with Chepstow or Towcester for example, where everyone knows that soft ground makes the courses very taxing) than at any other track in the UK. I have no statistical evidence for this, only the general impressions I have formed over the years. There is nothing about the track layout that suggests it should suddenly become a severe test of stamina after rain. But the number of pulled up horses and those beaten an awful long way suggest to me that something about the turf itself makes it very holding comparatively quickly. Many other tracks can withstand considerably more rain than Perth before becoming as testing. I'd be very interested in the views of the 'professionals' on here. |

sofiakenny - as ever I will try to give an honest assessment. The dramatic drift in the market in both his bumper and the hurdle are of concern, it would appear that there were sources prepared to oppose the horse at all costs. On both occasions I expected a better performance than that which resulted. He is very buzzy, pulled hard and didn't jump with his usual fluency. He had been at Perth for two days and may have been unsettled by the change of environment. In my opinion he showed nothing in the prelimaries which would precipitate such a drift. Having watched the race again I suspect he not only needs to settle, but needs further and would appreciate much better ground. Given he had only had one run in a bumper there is no way that such an assessment could be made from the form. So the position the layers took must have been based on alternaative sources, or guesswork. As I have stated I expected a better show - so you can take it I was not the source. Going forward I suspect we may look at 2 more runs over 2 miles for a mark, and in an attempt to take some of the fizz out of him.

I suppose it was hectic Bobby, but you're a natural at dealing with a large number of people eager to hear your opinion, and sending them home happy. I have to say I went to the track intending to back Nigel through the card but I was that engrossed talking to you I missed two of his winners. I did notice your better half does a great job keeping on top of the bets though and there's a lesson there for all of us.
My email is gwr7@btinternet.com. Cheers, Graeme |

Red & White - great to meet up have sent you an e-mail. As you spotted Mrs Dazzler is the shrewd one of the family, as a result of her greater attention my daughter who has just gone off to university got a sat nav, television, hi fi and fridge out of the two days - rather like you I talked my way through a number of the better opportunities.

did the daughter lay Max?

Bobby, enjoyed our chat on chelt forum, just as a matter of interest, have you ever thought about breeding your own, so to speak?
|
|
By:
In a word yes, I have actually persuaded Mrs Dazzler to relocate to a farm if we can find a suitable one, then I will be looking to find some suitable NH mares. Will also be buying foals and yearlings

Brilliant, then all hope is not lost! What an exciting prospect and adventure that will be for you. If you need a decent PA or office dogsbody let me know!!

|
By:
Quvega - to be clear this is a lifestyle choice and I am not expecting to be successful in the breeding game. I have always believed it is a lottery as outlined on;

Understood, still a marvellous lifestyle to be involved in, be it successful and profitable or otherwise, and hugely engrossing.
|
|
By:
Sorry, wasn't meaning to be crass by the way, I was only joking about the PA. I hope this comes off for you and you get much enjoyment from it.
|
|
By:
No problem - if it ever gets that big I will give you a shout. Got to find the right property first and its not proving easy
|
|
By:
Aah, you will, no rush, something will come up in time.

Bobby - i do not expect you to answer this, as it is probably not a fair question or any of my (or anyone else's) business but I wonder what some of your favourite races and horses have been - perhaps not including any of the horses you have been involved with. Just curious.
|
|
By:
There are many races, off the top of my head - Sea Pigeon beating Monksfield in 81 after being beaten the two previous years - horse and Francombe were exceptional. Garrison Savannah beating The Fellow by a whisker with Dessie in third in 91, Dessies win in 89 and his Irish National win in 90, Badsworth Boy winning his third QM in 85? One Man winning the QM in 98, Tied Cottage being disqualified in 1980 GC, Crisp jumping around Aintree in 73.
Horses - Comedy Of Errors, West Tip, Viking Flagship,Wayward Lad,Flagship Uberalles, Baracouda, Dato Star, Monsignor, Native Upmanship, Jodami, Ollie Magern |

Cheers Bobby, very interesting memories. Dessie was fantastic and One Man's QMCC was the most emotional moment for me at the festival. After disbelief, it was just pure joy! Jodami too, a stayer chaser with gears, and Ollie's jumping round Wetherby - all live long in the memory. Cheers, RC.

Echo that Bobby and R carver re One Man in the QMCC - pure redemption. His jumping that day and the sight of him pouring it on at the top of the hill with them all under the gun behind will live long in the menmory.

Ah, Dato Star, such a big hearted horse. I don't think the incredible Istabraq could have beaten him on heavy. After his Cheltenham bumper win they upgraded the drainage and the course hasn't been as testing since.
|
|
By:
I remember backing Dato Star in his first NH flat race at haydock, nice when you can watch a horse progress to the top rank...
Oneman was a true legend always gave 100% even in conditions that did not suit a beautiful animal... i cried the day he died... Top of my list was the enigmatic Viking flagship loved the horse battled like a lion, backed him two days running in ireland when he won the mitsubishi novices and in the main two miler a day later... I fell in love with racing through a horse called Remittance Man an absolute jumping machine who never fulfilled his true potential in my opinion... Wish you all the best this jumps season Bobby your insights are priceless, lets all hope Imperial can go on to be a true legend... |

i think BZ would reaponde, DT achieved little on the track. A haydock mince that would never achieve the heights of my most favourite, horses.
etc,,,, Hi lights make the heart founder. I will never forget that october with my non at schol nephew.... He even pointed out to me how well that jumped... X |

Hi Bobby. I was just wondering how FD is and is he taking up either of his engagements at Chelters? Do you think he can progress enough to take part in the Jewson at all. Thanks again.

I hope not - a decent handicap mark would seem the most sensible option until he settles.
