The value of racecourse gallops
On Saturday I watched Imperial Commander in company with stablemate Sybarite complete little more than a circuit of Kempton part at a steady pace. He wasn't put under any pressure during the exercise or asked any questions. Following the gallop he was happy, relaxed and his recovery time was minimal. He was on his way home before an obstacle was jumped in earnest.

In our own little niave bubble we were happy. The purpose of the exercise was to assess his progress, to provide mental stimulus and variety in his training regime, and to give him the opportunity to gallop on turf rather than the all weather gallops at home. Our jockey was more than happy and content that we were at a similar level as last year, and that he got the same feel from the horse. With all of our objectives met we retired to enjoy the balance of our weekend.

To the throng of experts the exercise then took on a new life, reports proclaimed that he was impressive, powerful and cruised with ease. Similarly he was laboured, lack lustre and showed little sparkle.

So which is true ?

Not being an expert I am not sure that I can provide an answer. But the good news is that I know a man that can answer the question, and I know exactly when he will be able to tell you. The man is Paddy Brennan and he will know at the bottom of the hill on the second circuit (if we get that far - please God !).
