speaking after a shocking 2-1 defeat to Greece -- England's first-ever loss to the Greeks -- at Wembley on Thursday, the 50-year-old appeared to play down his prospects.

"I was quite surprised after the last camp in terms of 'the job is mine' and 'it's mine to lose' and all the rest of it," Carsley told a news conference. "My remit has been clear from the start. I'm doing three camps. There are three games left and then hopefully I'll be going back to the Under-21s."

Now that's interesting and will probably be the outcome if that's how he feels.

Back to Frank Lampard?

I can't see them confirming him after that.

But if Betfair started another market today with the same rules he would win again with another 3 of these games to go.

So makes sense to open the next one after the Finland game.

I was on Lampard and a few others. Managed to green up across the board on Carsley. Nice little nick.

I'd rather have Thomas Tuchel with a toothbrush mustache, than this slippery looking, England hater... Plain

needs a top top manager like a Klopp

Tuchel can't handle big players apparently, his my way or the high way is out of touch with modern players, would not work, I'd keep Carsley til next summer then go for Ancelotti.

I think I'll reserve judgement on Carsley for the next few games. Don't want Tuchel, obviously would take Klopp, but still prefer an English manager if possible. Not everyone's favourite, but I'd consider Lampard and before anyone comments, don't forget, we took Allardyce.

Tuchel would be good for England. He is one of the best coaches in KO tournaments. He also seems to have a lot of love for English football, moreso than German. His problems at Dortmund and PSG were primarily with DOFs and their signing players for him that he didn't want or ask for. That obviously wouldn't apply for England.

What big name players was he not able to handle? He is stubborn and has a big ego but his problems at club level stem mainly from people seeking to undermine him doing his job. Once he gets the hump the wheels can come off pretty quickly but international football might actually suit him perfectly.

The tabloids have some interesting background on Tuchel, by all accounts. I'd be surprised if the FA would touch him with a bargepole.

I'd say the FA wouldn't want him, they'd see him as potential trouble.
A lot of talk re Pep who everyone would want but in a KO tournament I think Tuchel might be better.
Pep's system seems to take new players a long time to learn but with so many clone/similar managers in the PL now he'd have a lot of players with a good understanding of it.

'Tuchel would be good for England. He is one of the best coaches in KO tournaments' - The KO bit is the most important really. These tournaments are a bit of lottery and almost anyone can win. Not like a league where the quality shows with time.
Maybe the best league coaches don't make the best tournament coaches...

Would have preferred Pep if we're going with an overseas Manager. I can only assume him and Eddie Howe turned the FA down

Can't believe Tuchel. He looks like a manic depressive when ever I have seen him on the touchline. Has he ever smiled in his life?

How about Potter? I don't think he got a fair crack at Chelsea and Brighton played some really good stuff under him

He'll probably smile if Germany stuff us sage Devil As for Pep, he was never going to leave until the end of the season and it appears they didn't trust Carsley so they've gone for the next best... imo.

He's a massive step up from Gareth, like he was from Lampard at Chelsea. He did a great job there, didn't score many goals but didn't have a striker after Lukaku flopped and he had to work with Werner who was awful. The sanctions in his 2nd season didn't help but he still went close to knocking Real out.

United should have gone in for him, maybe they did in the summer?

England prob have the best manager in international football now. Great news for them with the WC coming up.

I always thought he looked like a junkie in post-match interviews at Chelsea, with his nike baseball cap and tracksuit.

Doubt he'll get as lucky with draws as Gareth did tho.

Lee Carsley, who the Football Association put in charge on an interim basis, will remain in place for England's final two Nations League matches against Greece and the Republic of Ireland in November, with Tuchel set to formally take over after that.

Why not put him straight in? Crazy

lets be honest , tutchell got an easy job, that most of us could do, qualify for world cuos, euros, , so easy these days, the test comes when he gets to the quarters and beyond  of these events

I think he's the right choice. I think he'll be good for England, and the players. He's far superior to Mr Southgate or Mr Carsley. Also, the England players know what they are in for with him.

Prima donnas please exit!

Decent enough appointment all be it slightly surprising in my view..

can see some discontent developing in the dynamics as time goes by (whether with players or FA) but wish him well and wish him success..

Tuchel did well to win the Champions League and the German Cup with Dortmund is good but his other honours don't really count for much.

A couple of league titles and a handful of domestic cups with PSG, but quite frankly it would be odd if PSG didn't win.

Bundesliga with Bayern, but then they had won it for previous 10 (ten) consecutive seasons.

UEFA Super Cup with Chelsea, against the mighty Villareal.

Club World Cup with Chelsea, somehow overcoming al-Hilal and Palmeiras.

He has a lot of medals but only two that are really worth anything.
