Eddie Howe has opened the door to a potential approach from the Football Association regarding the England manager’s vacancy by warning Newcastle’s revamped hierarchy that he could reconsider his future there if they fail to offer him sufficient autonomy.

Speaking at Newcastle’s pre-season training camp in southern Germany, Howe insisted he had a “burning desire” to lead the north-east club to a trophy, but he also flexed his muscles sufficiently to suggest that, if the right “boundaries” are not established in regards to a role he has held at St James’ Park since November 2021, he could be receptive to overtures from the FA should it deem him the right man to replace Gareth Southgate.

Howe suggested that the departure of Newcastle’s former co-owner Amanda Staveley, allied to the arrival of a new sporting director and performance director, has made for an unsettling summer on Tyneside. “For me being very, very proud to be Newcastle manager, this is all about Newcastle,” said the 46-year-old. “It’s not about England. So, as long as I am happy, feel supported, feel free to work in the way that I want to work, I have not thought of anything else other than Newcastle. I absolutely love the club. I love the supporters. I love where I am at in my career.”

Nonetheless, when asked if he would reject an approach from England, Howe became equivocal. “That is absolutely someone else’s conversation, not mine,” he said. “To speak about something else while manager of Newcastle is wrong.” There was a similar subtext to his reply to an inquiry as to whether he would still be in charge at St James’ Park come the start of the new season. “As long as I feel supported by the football club and free to work in the way that I want to work,” he said. “That’s the crucial thing.”

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe says he is "committed" to the club as long as he is "happy and feels supported", after being linked with replacing Gareth Southgate as England manager.

Southgate, who was appointed in 2016, resigned on Tuesday in the wake of England's 2-1 defeat by Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

Howe has emerged as a leading contender for the job, although Newcastle chief executive Darren Eales has said the club are determined to keep him.

"It is an unbelievable football club. I’m very, very proud to be the manager," said Howe, who was speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle from the Magpies' training camp in Germany.

"I love the supporters, I love the players, I love the staff. So really, there has been no thought in my mind on anything else and I have been very committed to the job here.

"For me, as long as I am happy and feel supported and feel free to do the work that I love to do at Newcastle, I’ll be very happy - and I am very happy."

if Lampard had no chance he wouldn't be 16/1

the FA want someone who will not cause controversy, will be media friendly and uncomplicated. That's why they went with Hodgson over Redknapp, and gave Clough a wide berth.

Howe and Potter are true FA appointments, Lampard roasting past may put off the big wigs, it's why they quickly moved on Pearce in his caretaker role when the racism story with Ince resurfaced.

Poch fits the mould but is a) not English which I imagine they'd prefer and b)is Argentinian, would Poch even want it, could be made to be a pariah back in his home country wearing the England colours and badge.

Don't know much about Carsley, it just a big risk, the Spanish coach coming through the ranks may have worked for them but Spanish coaches are better than English coaches, last time an England manager even won a top domestic league title was Howard Wilkinson over 30 years ago. Carsley would be an extremely safe and boring appointment, already been down that route with Southgate. You need a proven tactician.

I'd give it to Howe personally but they'd have to crowbar him out of Newcastle, think they wont have enough confidence to push Carsley through as he'd be a hard sell so I imagine they'll settle on Potter, which imo is a bad move because as said, he can't get teams to score, a lot of talent at Brighton and Chelsea and they play pretty passes but lack penetration. Also saw him conveniently come out of the woodwork by putting himself in the shop window in his Harry Potter outfit this week in some interview. Justified fav, a real FA type appointment, vanilla.
