That is not the cause. That is a symptom of our systemic failure to produce decent footballers. If our youngsters were good enough to play in the Premiership, they would play. Football club chairmen are not stupid - they would rather produce a team of home-grown talent than pay millions for players. It is changing, but the current generation of technique-poor and fitness-rich players are the product of flawed thinking of many moons ago. Hodgson represents that generational ideology, the sub-Charles Taylor primitivism still admired in certain quarters but almost medieval in its methods.

By:
It is typical English laziness, should we bring on our own players? Nah fcuk that we can pay 10 million for Johnny Foreigner and have done with it.
By:
CC - Not that straightforward though is it. Clubs buy foreign not because they're lazy but because they get far more for their money due to inflated transfer fees.
Re hodgson - he messed up last night and could and should have done more at half time and up to the equaliser. However, in general terms the problem isnt his fault. Our players just aren't good enough. |

Didnt realise Stimac was the Croat coach.
The likes of He and Bilic were around in 1998 and It would be interesting to look at who has made the managers grade from the England side at that world cup. |
By:
Ince is the only one from 98 currently managing
Surprised Stimac actually got their job, he was sacked from his last job and hadn't managed anyone for 2 years before Croatia appointed him. A gamble that seems to be working though. |
By:
jed.davison, it's really very straightforward, very easy to sit on the sidelines and pronounce judgment on others' efforts, call someone "an idiot" while being unable to do - or even suggest how to do - any better oneself.
Our media-dominated society encourages us to be 'armchair pundits' but in a way, a mere critic is essentially irresponsible, no matter how rational, sensible, constructive, 'obvious' or articulate his criticisms might be, unless he can demonstrate he can do better himself. Millions of football fans and others will disagree, of course, but I think it's a perspective to keep in mind, to keep our self-important egos in check. |
By:
Billy, the only players in the england squad from that world cup who have managed in the top flight are Ince, for six months at Blackburn and 3 wins from 17, and Shearer, for that brief doomed spell at Newcastle. Amazingly, four of them are still playing and Tony Adams has had a little go. As well as Stimac and Bilic, Prosinecki has managed Red Star belgrade and in the Turkish Super League, and Suker is president of the Croatian Football Federation.

Why is this a surprise? The academies and educational systems of young players here are even further behind the likes of the Dutch than the players are technically. If you want a decent post match interview, with very few exceptions, don't stick a microphone in front of an English player. If there was a world cup quiz for all the players, I doubt we'd even make it through qualification.
By:
Hold on a minute, the England was superior to Montenegro. They went into half time with the lead and dominating as much as England can dominate.
They came out at half time in 2nd gear, wtf was that? The players obviously thought they could coax home, this is were the manager needs to get after his players and freshen things up. It was an important game, i just don`t understand why we are mentally slow to adapt and do the right thing. When will England put in a full performance? That`s all we ask. |
By:
Christy - So we've established you would play Cahill (Withdrawn from the squad due to injury) over Smalling, and any midfielder instead of Cleverly but you're struggling to pinpoint one by name. Thanks for your insight.
Jed - So you don't know what you'd do differently but you know what Hodgson is doing is wrong? You clearly take your football knowledge from talksport phone ins, which your Liverpool reference illustrates. Out of interest if you are ruling yourself out, who would you have as a manager? |
By:
clive, i don't listen to talksport and i don't play football computer games. And yes i do know what hodgson is doing is wrong. do you what hodgson is doing is right?
By:
do you think.....?
By:
Shawcross should have been in the squad and walk into the team but of course he doesn't play for manure so he's out, any other midfielder but cleverley, is that too difficult to understand for you?
By:
Not sure what your point is Clive. Hodgson is the England manager not jed or CC. It's his job to find the answers and he's accountable for results.

Why is this a surprise? The academies and educational systems of young players here are even further behind the likes of the Dutch than the players are technically The problem isn't anything to do with the academies we have here, the problem is the amount of English players coming through them. Our top sides can afford to go out and acquire the cream of Europe's up and coming youngsters, whereas most other European nations focus on their own nationals. Look at the U19 NextGen european tournament that features most of Europes top club sides. England have 3 of the semi finalists (Chelsea, Arsenal and Villa (yes Villa!!). The amazing dutch kids of Ajax were knocked out by Villa and PSV were knocked out by Spurs. The problem we have is that most of the kids in the Arsenal academy are foreign and at Chelsea they just go and buy 20-25m players instead of giving the kids a go. |

My point is it easy to criticise and call for change but harder to substantiate these inane posts.
They talk as if they know any better when clearly they don't, just like all the other armchair experts who constantly snipe and do the country down. |
By:
We've got a bloke calling for Cahill to play without even realising he was withdrawn from the squad injured!! Some expert.
And another tool trying to draw conclusions on a 30 yr career based on half a season at a club with delusions of grandeur in total decline. |
By:
Looks like Clive has it wrapped up, don't question anything Roy knows best, ffs.

Captain Christy 27 Mar 13 14:44
Shawcross should have been in the squad and walk into the team but of course he doesn't play for manure so he's out I think his embarrassing display against Sweden had a lot more to do with his exclusion than the club he plays for. |
By:
Oh right, because very early in his international career he's up against Ibrahimovic let's just judge him on that, obviously not good enough to play against feckin Montenegro
By:
You're a Stoke fan, obviously you're going to disagree.
Shawcross was a shambles and didn't look up to it. He should (and will) get another chance, but an important world cup qualifier away from home is not that time. |
By:
Unfortunately he won't get another chance while Woy is the gaffer, he couldn't wait to get Smalling back in again.
By:
So clive, to be clear, you think Roy is doing a good job, and England couldnt get anyone better?
By:
Couldn't wait is probably stretching it.
At best Smalling is 5-6th choice in his plans. When fit, Hodgson would've had the likes of Rio, Cahill, Jagielka, Dawson and possibly Lescott ahead of Smalling. |
By:
None of them are International-quality defenders though, except Rio. And Smalling is no worse than any of them.
By:
One problem that is (and always has been) unique to English football, is that almost always the entire squad is made up of players who play, and have only ever, played in one league in England.
Every other country has players with experience of different styles of football from around the world. Premier League football is all about pace & aggression. It's no wonder then that when England come up against the flair of Spain, the discipline of Germany, the catenaccio of Italy, or the technical footie of Easter Europe, they just cannot string together more than three passes, and resort to long balls into the box. Interesting stat on SSN earlier, that in all of last night's qualifiers, England were 20th in number of completed passes at about 325 (78% successful), behind the likes of Northern Ireland and Moldova. Germany were top with 933 (90% successful). That pretty much sums it up. |

those who want to stick up for the manager are the ones who have the questions to answer.
when he saw the difference in the first 10 minutes of the second half why didn't he do something about it instead of giving a passable impersonation of a rabbit in full beam of the headlights? when he saw rooney dropping deeper and deeper, thus denying us an out ball, why didn't he either take rooney off or drop him into midfield and bring another forward on. why was the team allowed to go out in the second half not knowing whether to "stick or twist"? if he wanted to try and hold on to what we had why didn't he bring on defensive type players to play in midfield [baines in front of cole, and walker in front of johnson maybe]? why was the team who were so dominant in the first half chasing shadows in the early part of the second half when montenegro had made one substitution and why didn't he react to it rather than stand on the touchline wringing his hands? and finally;why did he allow a team who were so much better man for man [as demonstrated in the first half] to be reduced to the spectacle of throwing two points awy agains far inferior opposition? |
By:
....so have we been knocked out then ?
By:
So clive, to be clear, you think Roy is doing a good job, and England couldnt get anyone better?
Yes, I think he is the best available English manager at present. And I think he is doing well enough not to pillored by Ryan Shawcross's dad or someone who thinks the Liverpool debacle is reflective of his overall career. |
By:
If the team had been picked purely on premier league ratings for each position this season , it would have been....
Foster Johnson Williamson Jagielka Baines Walcott Gerrard Osman Downing Rooney Carroll Don't think it would of made any difference who he played .His format is pretty similar for every game (unless you are playing proper minnows)......get in front and try and hold on . Thought Montenegro were there for the taking and any decent side should have taken them apart even allowing for the hideous pitch.... |

Dont suppose there is much point having a debate then clive. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course.
But it genuinely surprises me that anyone thinks we couldnt do better. His forte is boring, uninspiring football, where draws are the first priority. I think anyone with a modicum of football knowledge has long since accepted that our players are average, so there isnt much point belabouring this. But everywhere he has been, he has set up in a similar fashion, and played negative football, where not losing is the priority over winning. Wouldnt it be better if we had a Manager who could motivate his team and whose main aim was to win games? Of course there would be a few low points a long the way, but I would take this over the current dross any day of the week. Our best chance of doing well is by taking a few risks imo...not setting up to get draws. I cant see why his Liverpool tenure is suddenly dismissed as a debacle and considered irrelevant to his overall career either. He has no one to blame but himself for how it turned out. Its arguably the best job he has had, and contrary to popular opinion about him never being given a chance, the fans were behind him until it was clear he wasnt up to the job. Which unfortunately for him, was very early on. |
