Roy Hodgson says he will build a ‘better and stronger’ England
Saturday 21 June 2014 22.30 BST It would be harder to build a "worse and shitt1ier" England ![]() |

"England have fallen to 20th in the latest Fifa world rankings, their lowest position since May 1996."
Well done Woy! ![]() |

England are, at absolute very best, the 7th or 8th most talented team in the world. The void between them and the best teams is too big to be be bridged by any coach's selection and tactics.
Too much sheery son [ This image is no longer available. ] |

and now he's appointed Wayne Rooney as England captain

Anyone know how many English players started in the first match of the Premier League in 2014? Are the numbers still falling?

^ very impressive work mate. One question though...is your telly broke ?

By:
^I was watching a 1986 World Cup match, Denmark v Scotland, while I was working on that.
The "Danish Dynamite" team from 1980 to 1992 played some good football. I'm Irish, which makes my work to find out how many English play in the Premier League a bit odd. English football needs to get the finger out or they will be going down the plughole. You can't expect Roy Hodgson to change water into wine. I might even do a bit more digging to see if the 87 England players above have any potential. Baines, Ferdinand, Gerrard, Jagielka, Rooney, Terry in that 87 are not going to do it. |

another boring display from a boring manager that hasn't got a scooby doo

Boring is too kind a word mover, depressing that even in a firendly we try to play backwards, sideways and backwards against a pub team.

been horrible watching england for years....strangely though in hoddles and venables time we didnt look so far behind technically.
now teams like peru equador and chile look better with the ball....thats how times have changed. |
By:
they are better because they pass and move
usa and lots of similar teams looked better at the world cup until england play at a club pace for the international team we will always perofrm badly. i don't expect us to win a tournament we have no right to but the style of football is rubbish. |
By:
Woy putting his usual BS spin on yet another pile of dross.
Those apologists who supported Woys ridiculous appointment are AWOL it seems. Guy is a joke. |
By:
must be a chance momentum will become unstoppable to get rid of him if they lose to switzerland
By:
Two shots on target against Norway, no wonder the interest in the national team is probably at an all-time low and stadium half empty. Unfortunately it won't be getting any better under Hodgson.
By:
that's what will get him the sack. if they can't sell tickets to watch the sort of mediocre rubbish his teams always serve up. as always it comes down to money
By:
“They’re not the teams that normally attract full houses. But if the team works as hard as they did tonight, show the appetite and desire, and the aggression in the defending, show the exciting moves that were there for all to see, they’ll come back.”
good ol Woy |
By:
Did he really say that? Does he not realise he makes himself sound like a complete idiot? Just like when he claimed a 0-0 draw with Costa Rica had sent the fans home with a smile on their faces. What a moron.
By:
Manager Roy Hodgson said: "We'll find it hard to bring attendances back because the opponents we're playing won't excite the public."
Totally out of touch. Anyone would go and see an England game if the England team was exciting to watch, whoever they were playing. "We enjoyed some positive moments, some good movement and good play. All the things I wanted I thought I saw for large periods of the game." The movement was shocking, Woy must have been watching the Germany/Argentina match. |
By:
Defeat on Monday should see the end of him if the FA had any balls.
By:
All football fans disagree..... apart from this... Roy Hodgson is a ****g useless manager.
By:
That's very true Mike. Very rare fans of all clubs agree on something, and I dont think there are any that think Hidgson is anything but a complete buffoon.
By:
You have tried almost everyone else and are still very poor,Rooney hasn,t kicked a ball or anything else in over 2yrs yet he is made captain,Cahill hopeless,Jones rubbish.Henderson/Wilshire average, thar ye go.
By:
Numerous managers succeed in getting the best out of average players. There's no excuse for Hodgson, he has a full team of Premier League players and yet match after match he sends them out and they play like San Marino (sorry San Marino). Last night he refused to get involved with the shots on goal stat and mentioned how many were blocked etc (of which there were 6). It was a woeful performance, like the vast majority of his other matches as manager, and then bleats on about the quality in the team and how they do for their clubs. #sickofhearingit
By:
Cahill hopeless? Why do the Liverpool contingent look so good under BR and half as good under Woy. They definitely aren't world beaters but nobody can convince me Hodgson isn't completely inept and they another Manager wouldn't fare better.
By:
this debate was going on in the world cup
teams with players in lower leagues all over the world (including our country) were performing better than us. the tempo is wrong for starters, it's bull that our players cannot play at a tempo, they do it every week in the premier league. for england its lethargic rubbish. the defence is definitely weaker now than it has been in the past but from midfield up, there should be a great energy and an attempt at playing fast pass and move football. it just doesn't happen. when you can't do it against norway, it's far more than the players ability. rooney is an issue in itself, WTF is wrong with him, just got worse and worse, looks gone at the game at 28. |
By:
The real problem you've got with Hodgson, and why he's such a bad manager, is that he doesn't even know the qualities of his own players.
He really has no idea how good Sterling is or where he should be playing in the team and he obviously thinks Rooney is still the Rooney of 2004. There is no justification, and hasn't been since 2010 at least, for picking Wayne Rooney for England. It's almost criminal that having been relieved of two sacred cows in Lampard and Gerrard, we're going to have to watch another one lumbering around for another tournament cycle at least, especially when we have decent players we could play instead. Hopefully Welbeck will get some games at Arsenal to show Hodgson and a couple of other managers why he should no longer be playing second fiddle to a wasted talent. |
By:
For sure they could get a better manager than Roy Hodgson, but it wouldn't make a huge difference IMO. They celebrate these 100 cap players and call them World Class when really they are above average and no better.
Gerard, Cole, LAmpard, Rooney, Beckham had what 500 caps between them? Now ask yourself if those players had a French/Italian/German/Spanish/Brazilian/Argentinian parent and declared for one of those countries how many caps would they have? Gerard, Lampard, Rooney and Beckham would have got 15-20 for those nations before they were deemed not good enough, Cole maybe would get close to 100 because lb is a problem position for most teams and Nations |
By:
Cant agree Texas. Gerrard would have got many, many caps for any country. England have never, ever played him in his best position. He has never been any good as a central midfielder in a 4-4-2. Or even worse as a left midfielder in the same formation.
If you look at his performances in the Benitez era, in the hole behind Torres and freed of any defensive duties whatsoever, he was genuinely world class, and would have been good enough for most sides in the world. |
By:
problem with the pl's "higher tempo" is it involves risker passing.
british players havent the technique to carry off more intricate short passes so cant play a short passing high tempo game....hence why we have to always take a touch....i kno wi bang on about it but its a major flaw in our coaching in this country when you see far moreoften foreign players knowing where to pass before they have it. we will discount jose enrique in this as he really is more british than the british lol. 5 passes to advance 40 yards from a continental side is almost certainly going to be harder to close down than the same from a set of british players....more often than not. thats the issue. they are mor elikely to play a higher tempo if they see fit to than we are because if we play our high tempo it involves giving the ball back to them more.... a vicious circle. but your right striding....higher tempo would help just not the pl's version |
By:
what bothers me is the unprecedented support he gets from the football media in this country. even after "monkeygate" (still cant believe he got away with that) and an atrocious world cup. another atrocious performance v's norway where only 40k turned up at wembley, yet the media still give him an easy ride...it's incredible!
his england team play static one dimensional bog standard football that lacks imagination, flair, spark or creativity. no wonder ppl don't want to watch them. and no doubt if we get beat by the swiss the media will still back him up. it'll be the usual "give roy a chance .. we are building for the future...it's a young squad" bore off you mugs and get real. the best thing you can do for england's future is to sack him. it's jut not working...can't you see that? |
