One excuse after another with Hodgson. Apparently now questioning an England manager about a performance that created only two shots on target is now  'F*cking b0llocks'. He doesn't want to talk about stats, unless it's the possession one when his team has the majority of it.

Nevermind, the clock is ticking and the sooner England get someone in that knows what they're doing the better.
Report 4thjulykid September 5, 2014 1:29 PM BST
Comparing club management to International management is just wrong. Hodgson has little/no choice to who he picks. And the quality and the expectations do not match.

Mourinho, Rodgers etc spend zillions buying the best available. A bit easier to have success when that is the scenario.

IF they lose to the swiss i think he's gone. FA will act once it starts to affect them in the pocket. His time is up should have gone after the world cup. Managers who had better campaigns resigned. England should not be giving long term contracts. It should be for one campaign at a time. Hodgson is on so much money he's going to hang on till the bitter end. The brand of football he's trying to play is horrible. The players are no world beaters but a manager should be able much more out of them. England don't play as a team. Sturridge being the prime example. Loads of times against norway he was trying to do it all on his own. A decent manager would be having a word in his ear. At liverpool rodgers would not put up with it.
Report Can't Catch Me September 5, 2014 1:37 PM BST
What has winning trophies got to do with it? Hodgson doesn't exactly have a cabinet laden with them does he? That's despite a career of about 90 years Managing. Surely playing progressive football and developing the youth is what we should be doing. Rodgers is excelling at just that. Of course the two I mention probably aren't interested, but I can't take anyone seriously who is suggesting Roy is doing as well as we could hope for, and that there isn't a better option out there.

Abject failure in the WC and absolutely no signs of improvement.

Brendan Rodgers? Weren't his team big odds on to win the league last year in the final few games? and won nothing.

It's a bit early to be calling him a good manager. No Suarez, no trophies IMO.
Report Can't Catch Me September 5, 2014 1:43 PM BST
But that's irrelevant. Different players, different opposition, different era. It's no excuse to accept mediocrity to say 'ah but we've always been poor'.

Hodgson is a dinosaur. And as bad as we have been in recent years, on the evidence I watched he's taking us even further backwards.

Get used to it. England hasn't produced a World class player since Gary Linekar. World record transfer was for a Welshman.

If you do not have the quality you cannot play adventurous football, you would get hammered, think how the media would deal with that. Argentina in thwe WC weren't that exhilarating were they? That is International football today, negative.

Would you really be happy to be 'good' as the USA, Algeria, just by chasing the ball around like a bee around a honey pot.

How many International friendlies over 3 goals this week? International football is incomparable to club football, so when you have got players who are at best average it must be an impossible task, a bigger one than pleasing the media, who are all England managers in their own heads.
Report themover September 5, 2014 2:14 PM BST
If it doesn't matter who manages England you might as well employ someone on £30k instead of the millions paid to Hodgson. But, as we all know, that is bollox! It needs a manager that can get the best out of the current crop of players, or as a minimum play them in a formation/positions that they will improve in. Boring Hodgson was never going to set the world alight with his style of football. I would rather have seen England lose to Norway but have been entertaining and at least look like they might set the Euros alight in 2016...the chance of that under Hodgson is nil.

Roy Hodgson’s f-word rant: where fact and fiction collide

Facts speak for themselves

What Roy said: “I am entitled to [be annoyed], aren’t I? When you have questions like: ‘You had only two shots on target …’ We can’t get rid of the baggage, we can’t change the fact we had a bad World Cup, we can’t play those games against Italy and Uruguay again, but I think you will have to give me the entitlement at least.”

The reality: Of course, Mr Hodgson is perfectly entitled to get annoyed about whatever he wants, be that journalists asking pesky questions, next door’s azaleas encroaching on his garden or the pedestrianisation of Norwich city centre. However, it is a little strange to get irked by facts. England did indeed have only two shots on target, one of which was a penalty, the other a toe poke from Danny Welbeck rather easily saved. There’s enough in this world to be irked by without getting upset at numbers.

Laying the blame

What Roy said: “If we had played badly, if a lot of players had had really poor performances, if the quality of our passing and our movement was nothing like I wanted to see and if our defending wasn’t as compact, aggressive and organised as it was for large periods, I would be the first to say so. But I am not going to say it’s not that, just because we had a bad World Cup.”

The reality: The idea of Hodgson fronting up and publicly giving his players what-for should England play badly would be slightly easier to believe if, well, he really ever did that. Observe his comments after the insipid 0-0 draw with Costa Rica at the World Cup, which was England’s only point of a tournament they departed at the first round stage, described by Daniel Taylor on these pages as capping the “bland ignominy” of the campaign:
“We showed today what a good team we can be. I’m disappointed not to finish with the victory, but I don’t think we could have asked for a much better performance. Apart from the first 10 or 12 minutes of the game, I thought we dominated totally, but we didn’t take our goal chances. If we had taken them, it would have been a comfortable victory. We created chances, that’s the important thing. Normally Daniel is so clinical, so I’m not that concerned, I know he’ll take the chances in the future. I thought we were unlucky not to win this game, but I’m pleased to have given the fans something to cheer.”

The reality: Not exactly a Jeremy Kyle-esque “telling it like it is” now, is it?

Are Norway any good?

What Roy said: “You have seen an England team dominate for 45 minutes against a good opponent.”

The reality: Norway are ranked 53 in the world. They started with Joshua King up front, who only sporadically gets into the Blackburn team, and either side of him were Cardiff’s Mats Daehli and Tarik Elyounoussi, who has scored once for Hoffenheim since joining them in 2013. Of course, “good” is a subjective word, but this Norway side were not really crammed with world-beaters, one must admit.

Master of exaggeration

What Roy said: “You have seen us work very hard to create chances, you have seen players get in behind defenders in wide areas and miss crosses and, yes, I am not terribly happy about that. I would have liked the crosses to be a little bit better. I would have liked two of three of those shots to get past the blocking player and whizz past the goal. I would have liked Daniel Sturridge’s magnificent effort, from that wonderful [Raheem Sterling] pass, not to land on the roof of the net.

“I saw a 10-to-15-minute period in the second half when I thought we were nowhere near what I wanted to see. I thought we lost the aggression in our defending and we didn’t attack anywhere near as well. Joe had to make a good save from a corner, and Norway almost scored again from a Gary Cahill back-pass. But we saw a different system then. We changed it around and I saw some very positive moments.

“John Stones, who has played hardly any games recently for Everton, stepped out at right-back and gave a very strong performance and when Chambers came on he did well, too.”

The reality: Stones has indeed played only one game this term, but since he played a full part in pre-season and, perhaps more to the point, everyone else has played only three games, it isn’t as if this is a man clambering back from a lengthy spell on the sidelines while everyone else is well in the swing of things. Encouraging a promising youngster is grand, but exaggerating things doesn’t really help anyone.

Was he watching the same game?

What Roy said: “Henderson and Wilshere, in my book, were excellent. Delph came in to play his first game and showed some very good things going forward and, of course, Sturridge was excellent throughout. All I’m saying is I want to judge every game as it is.”

The reality: “Excellent” is quite a strong word, particularly as neither man created any chances or scored a goal, but that’s Hodgson’s own judgment. Perhaps more pertinent is the whether it’s worth at this point considering if Hodgson is of the right sensibility for a job of such scrutiny as this. In the wider scheme of things, he has received remarkably little criticism for England’s World Cup campaign, which (and forgive the repetition here) was a shambles, the side departing at the first round stage while gaining only a single point. One point. Being England manager is often described as the impossible job, because of the attention on it and the expectations placed upon both side and coach, but expecting a slightly better showing at an international tournament and more than a couple of shots on goal in a friendly is not asking for the moon on a stick.

Some will no doubt overreact, and a few very much have done, but Hodgson seemed to be bristling from the very start of his post-match press conference on Wednesday, entering his appointment with the media in an almost confrontational manner, so it therefore probably wasn’t a huge surprise that he reacted in such a way to a series of relatively innocuous questions/journalists pointing out facts. Nobody has grafted Hodgson’s face on to a root vegetable, nobody has come up with an amusing rhyming nickname about his rain-absorption prevention preferences, nobody has called into question his commitment to the cause. If Hodgson reacts like that to such a comparatively harmless inquisition, what’s going to happen if things get really bad?

Crowds don’t lie

What Roy said: “Welbeck came on and showed his potential, so there were a lot of good things but the bottom line is this: before the World Cup, with all the euphoria, we were getting 75,000 people to see us play Peru. Now we have 40,000 to see us play against a much more difficult opponent.”

The reality: With apologies for falling back on the ol’ rankings again, Peru are 52nd, Norway are 53rd.

Oh Roy

What Roy said: “I can’t put that right because I can’t turn the clock back, but what I can do is analyse what I have seen and judge that through my eyes and not because someone is telling me: ‘Well, you had only two shots at goal’ because, for me, that is absolute ****g bollocks, I’m sorry.”

The reality: Actually, we could falsely moralise all day about the appropriateness of a man in Hodgson’s position using such post-9pm language, or wonder about his professionalism or temper, but we’ll give you this one. After all, everyone likes a good swear.

A manager needs to be judged on two things.  The state of improvement of the team from when they take over, and performance in tournaments.

1) Has the England team improved since Hodgson took over?  No evidence to suggest so.
2) How did they perform at the World Cup?  LaughLaughLaughLaughLaugh

In his defence, it's an impossible job.  Despite all the usual search for answers, the most obvious problem is that our leading teams do not pick English players, therefore the available selections are playing at a lower level, or are occasional rotational squad players.  There is no light on the horizon that this will ever change as long as the Premier League and the FA act independently.  The FA need to taken ownership, so that (like in rugby) the national team is the pinnacle and everything else serves that.  Understandably, Abramovich, the Abu Dhabi lot, Fenway Sports etc, couldn't give a flying fck about the England team.

The fans are to blame.  They can't have the PL in it's current form and expect a great England team too.

Part of the problem (and it's only a part) is that we have "friendlies".  Insofar as we call them friendlies, so the fans, media and players treat them as friendlies.  ie, not a serious international match.

In cricket, or rugby, or in fact any other sport do you have the concept of "friendlies".   They are called test matches or internationals.  They are taken seriously by everyone and as such you tend to see a better product.  Can you imagine a rugby match between England and New Zealand being called a friendly, and then played in the manner in which England footballers do, with almost everyone looking half-arsed and as if they would rather be anywhere else.

It all comes down to attitude, and everyone (management, players, press, fans) need to demand that a non-tournament match is played at the same intensity and with the same preparation as a world cup final, with rewards for success and penalties (ie not getting picked again) for failure.  In that way you develop a winning habit which should become second nature when it comes to the tournaments.  I remember a few years ago when Spain went for about 3-4 years unbeaten through tournaments and "friendly" international matches.  It became hard for anyone who wasn't top notch to get a look in because they had a winning side that took every match seriously.

Why can't anyone else see this???

Danno, most of what you say is down to the manager

I also don't believe most of the players are totally useless. Many international teams have over-achieved (rankings wise) in tournaments..Denmark, Greece, USA to mention a few. These players all play in the Premier League, which in itself means they aren't useless otherwise their clubs would disgard them. What is wrong is the attitude, motivation, tactics..and they are, the responsibility of the manager. If the manager thinks after a match that a player, or players, under-perform through attitude or motivation they should be dropped. Most of the team that played against Ireland shouldn't play against Slovenia, of course they will because the manager is soft as sh1t and that flows through the whole set-up.

No takers. Thought someone was bound to take the bait regarding Rooney who will obviously go as well. So 21 of these go plus Wilshere and Rooney. The most under threat maybe Dier/Drinkwater, Walcott and possibly a right back (so walker)given that Stones can cover central and right back.
Report mafeking March 17, 2016 1:28 PM GMT
the obsession with wilshere is very odd. just 14 league appearances in the last 2 seasons and as many prem goals in 8 years as dele alli has in 6 months

tbh his most prominent appearences in the last 2 years have both been pished up ones on the bus
Report asparagus March 17, 2016 1:58 PM GMT
He scored two cracking goals on one of his most recent England appearances and that will still be in Hodgson's mind particularly as we haven't really got anyone demanding a place in that position. (apart from Ali)
Report JC1326 March 17, 2016 2:05 PM GMT
Walcott, what is the point? I'd rather we took somebody like Deeney, at least he may surprise, whereas you know what you'll get with Feo. Why is Sterling in, if he can't get in City's team?

Hodgson is terrified of taking risks, but a team with people like Drinkwater and Vardy, SUPPLEMENTED with quality players that derserve their place, like Dier, Alli and Kane, would do the job. Nobody's asking this idiot to take a shadow side, but just use a little imagination, ffs
Report asparagus March 17, 2016 2:10 PM GMT
Totally disagree. Think is squad is totally correct. Deeney isn't good enough. Drinkwater who deserves a chance will get one.

Hodgson displaying his mastery of diplomacy today.....

Asked why Gary Neville is struggling as a manager , Roy explained that he's spoken to Gary and the problem is the  Valencia players are no good/not trying and the whole club has an unrealistic expectation of being top half.

Spanish media will batter Neville with that.

Report tobermory June 12, 2016 1:19 AM BST
Hodgson said after the Portugal game that Kane's job in the team is 'to defend the wide areas' .

So while he is stuck out there he is nearest to the corner i guess

Wow…you all loved the guy in qualifying and NOW he's useless?  Where was this thread during the great qualifying miracle? If he'd won you'd all be calling him a genius! Pick an opinion and stick with it. Gutless performance by mediocre players. No passion. No fire. Always the same with England. Why so shocked? Great odds on Iceland thanks to the arrogant and delusional shaping the markets. Thanks Roy!
Report charwell. June 29, 2016 6:25 PM BST
My opposition to Hodgson began before he was the England manager. The qualifying group was full of utter shyte sides we would breeze past without a manager.

People say he won toss all during a long career.

However, he has managed the double of being Liverpool and Englands worst manager ever.
