Probably the worst appointment since Steve McLaren.

The bloke has won nothing and that is how it will remain.

36 years and he stacked up £11 million!!!!!!!

That was before the England job.......welcome to the gravy train Laugh

So what do you suggest?

England are, at absolute very best, the 7th or 8th most talented team in the world. The void between them and the best teams is too big to be be bridged by any coach's selection and tactics.

So who do you want or expect? The established top coaches know the weight of unrealistic expectation is going to eventually bring them down, so does the salary help them sleep easier and gloss over the blip on their CV?

Impossible to imagine a scenario by which anyone gets offered the job and the consensus is that they are either up to it, and/or not just doing it for the money. So you get a Hodgson - Slight journeyman type who most thought wasn't up to the miracle working in the first place, or a Capello, who had seen and done it all, but fancied one last pay day, or a Sven - cheque book club manager (Redknapp would have been even worse) or a McLaren - Number 2 who initially did ok as a manger and was fast tracked but it went badly wrong.

Complete poison chalice however you slice it. Stop blaming the man in the dugout - It's the limited shower of sh1t on the pitch that is the problem.

so in "club" world we are supposed to accept that the manager carries the responsibility for the teams performance but at international level the players can be blamed? Errrm no I dont buy that. England's team, even the one sent out tonight, is better than NMontenegro and should beat them. We're not even talking about an Italy, Germany, Spain etc. So how does it turn out they don't beat them? First half all looked rosy, 1 up in control. So what then happened? Second half was a shambles, Hodgson changed nothing even when it was blatantly obvious Montengro had taken control, in fact they should have won based on the 2nd half performance. Not only was it tactically inept he even stuck with it. Fair enough I dont expect England to beat Spain, Italy, Germany but I expect them to beat Montefookingnegro!

It's Football's cruellest conjunction, a bad team and a bad manager. If it were possible for this team to be improved, then Hodgson would not be the man to do it.

We have basically been held, and latterly dominated, by the Balkan equivalent of Wales. Two or three quality players, and a collection of committed professionals with palpable pride in their country.

Hodgson, unfortunately because he's a likeable individual, is a total idiot.

There is a very real possibility that this team will not qualify for the World Cup - I don't see them winning the group, and if they come second they could face France, one of Belgium or Croatia, or Portugal in the play-offs, and I don't see how they can beat any of those teams. I've just watched the Croatia game and they are in a totally different League to us.

It doesn't take a football brain to realise since the gazza, lineker era England have'nt had a team good enough to challenge for the major international trophies. It would save a lot of people a lot of money if England failed to qualify. Of course the people who make money from sponsoring / advertising will be devastated.Mischief

The players aren't good enough to get to the latter stages of a major tournament.

They are good enough to win when 0-1 up against a modest Montenegro team.  Roy sent them out asleep for the second half and failed to make any changes despite the fact everyone could see the equaliser was coming.  He deserves plenty of flack for this one I'm afraid.

Yes England are an average side, but that doesn't take away from the fact Hodgson is inept. A very poor Manager who should never have been given this job. One look a his CV tells you that.

It's been a perennial problem for England, they've paid exorbitant amounts to allegedly excellent coaches without any success, they now turn to a 'steady eddy' who will be just as unsuccessful, but, will not cost them a fortune. The bottom line is England don't now produce enough players who can compete at the very highest level, you could replace 'enough' with 'any'.

The main problem is the premier league monster, clubs are too interested in shelling out huge sums to bring in foreign players for example there was a story this morning about Arsenal and Man City wanting to compete for Jovetevic for 24 million. Wenker is probably mainly responsible for his policy of bringing in cheap european players at the expense of bringing on and playing English players, and he has only just begun to see the error of his ways.

.....................................................................................................

From Wiki:

Roy Hodgson (born 9 August 1947) is an English former footballer who is the manager of the England national football team.

Hodgson, who has managed sixteen different teams in eight countries, guided the Switzerland national team to the last 16 of the 1994 World Cup and qualification for Euro 1996; Switzerland had not qualified for a major tournament since the 1960s. From 2006 to 2007, he managed the Finland national team, guiding them to their highest ever FIFA ranking of 33rd place and coming close to qualifying for a major tournament for the first time in their history. He has managed two teams beaten in the finals of both the UEFA Cup and the Europa League. Hodgson has also coached many notable club sides, including Internazionale, Blackburn Rovers, Grasshoppers, FC Copenhagen, Udinese, Fulham, Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion. Hodgson served several times as a member of UEFA's technical study group at the European Championships[2] and was also a member of the FIFA technical study group at the 2006 World Cup.[3] Hodgson speaks five languages and has worked as a television pundit in several of the countries in which he has coached.[4]

So why don't Spain sack their coach after the result against Finland?

What a load of rubbish. The sides we've been outperformed by do not have better players. That is fact. Tunisia or morroco whoever it was should have beaten us at one of these tournaments..you going to sit there and say they had better players?!

Even the sides that do there is an acceptable way to lose...losing to germany and getting mauled with such basic schoolboy defending is unacceptable. Parking the bus and losing to an average Italian team in that manner is unacceptable.

All I've ever wanted is for a manager to go in and pick a TEAM, define a style of play and get something greater than the sum of its parts like all the best managers do.

Do you honestly think if Mourinho took over tomorrow he would not turn this set of players into an efficient winning side?! I'm not saying we'd win the world cup but qualifying in dross groups like this would never be in doubt and we'd be legitimate dark horses in every tournament with  luck as opposed to the joke we are at the mo.

The England managers job is always going to be a nightmare. The press insist on picking the team, then destroy it when we lose.

Last night in the 2nd half, the players all left it to each other to clear any danger. They were lazy and RH should have made changes long before Montenegro scored.
Why cant the players put in 100% commitment to the cause when they pull on a white shirt?

I would suggest they need a really strong character like Mouriniho to gain any success, although you could argue we had that with Capello. I don't know why but the players seem a lot less likeable and show less passion. Do you really think the 3 lions song would have been as successful if it mentioned the players who play today?

He is a dinosaur, stuck in the mindset that substitutions can only be made at certain points in the match. An hour hasn't passed, so no subs can come on. The top managers shape events that happen on the pitch, and react when events go against them. Ferguson cost United similarly the other week against Real - Mourinho reacted immediately to the sending off, Ferguson waited. Ferguson was arguably more culpable that night than Hodgson yesterday because he would have had decent options on the bench had he chosen to use them, whereas Hodgson was only ever going to be able to bring on another second-rater.

Our entire game needs a radical shake up similar to what the Germans did after Euro 2000.

Forget blaming Hodgson or whoever, the fact is we're just not good enough. None of the recent managers before him succeeded and the managers after him won't either.

This won't change for as long as the premier league is money obsessed and almost every top side fields a predominantly foreign XI every saturday. Chelsea, 'our' european champions haven't had an English first team regular come through their youth team since John Terry. He made his debut in 1998!!

Jed perhaps illuminate us with how you would have approached the game differently in terms of selection, tactics, preparation, media management etc...

Your football management experience clearly dwarfs Hodgson's given your posts (I suspect it is based mainly on playing computer games). But perhaps rather then simply criticise Roy with the benefit of hindsight you can explain what you would do.

Otherwise, you risk just looking like a shouty armchair bore!

cri**** - Simple, because they don't really care.

This is your answer right here!

Last yr ahead of Euros, article abt Oxlade-Chamberlain sneaking into a pub to watch England at WC................then u have Carrick, dont pick me unless im playing - Richards, dont put me on standby cuz i want to sit on the beach instead.

Oxlade-Chamberlain is an England fan first and footballer 2nd..........find 10 more like him that want to play for England and not have England Team on their CV so they get a bigger paycheque.

Wasn't it Terry and Lampard complaining about wearing England Suits and Ties on the bus instead of tracksuits and tshirts..(5 minute bus ride and they couldnt cope)...i woulda told them, "i don't want you stressing about your attire.......best you phuck off home and we'll manage without you. "

More important to "look kool" and less importance about who they are representing. It's all about "me", they aren't fans, they are there for their CV.

The fact of the matter is that I am not paid to make those selections, plans and judgments, Hodgson is. Whatever I would do is frankly irrelevant, it might work it might not but you will never get the opportunity to sit in judgment of it after the event. With Hodgson though, we can. And he comes up short, just as his long-term record in football management suggested he might. OK, he has achieved some decent outcomes in lower-grade football, but when asked to test his skills against the top managers, he has come up short. That is not conjecture clive, it's a fact.

What I would do doesn't matter, it's what a progressive modern coach might do that matters. I don't know if you bothered to catch up with some coverage of the Wales-Croatia game, you would have seen such a man. Stimac's team played some delightful stuff, and then he spoke to the media afterwards with perfect idiomatic English.

The really worrying thing is not how bad we are, but how bad we are going to get as other teams like Belgium, Croatia, Holland move their game to compete with the Spanish football paradigm. We are going the other way, to cautious percentage football. Hodgson is not just making us bad now, he is digging our grave.

The so called spine of that team that was supposedly the generation about 4-6 years ago, when if it was ever all going to come together at a major finals, that was it, is now still there or there abouts because those coming through simply aren't good enough to have replaced them. Only Hart, Ashley Cole and Gerrard out of the current first choice team are guaranteed week in, week out starters for their club sides.

I disagree about the coaching thing. Put Mourinho in charge and they could win the World Cup. Could of won it back in 2002 if Beckham and Owen had been fit.

Perfectly reasonable when he was in his prime as a man, and had achieved some success in Scandinavia, for European clubs to take a punt on him. Eriksson, similar. But the English FA have seen him since and his limitations have been exposed. He blew the biggest job of his life in half a season because his style was archaic and steeped in caution. The days of old men are dying. It's all about players being coached by young men with ideas, who the players know to be versed in the new football, not some old duffer still trying to to recreate the Wingless Wonders.
