yup, record breaker.
just hearing the things his fellow players have said about him tells u hes special! |
|

JAM please look I did go overboard what I was trying to say is that Barca have a world class side and will smash the Champions League.
|
|
By:
madrid will give them a game in the final perhaps. they are something else tho, a joy to behold and the reason i love football so much!
i wish every team would try to play like them. |
|
By:
Torres is a far superior player than Carlton Cole and struggles for Spain with the Barcelona players. Its not just a case of anyone would score playing with them.
|
|
By:
how many goals has messi scored in really big matches, world cups, champs league semi finals/ final, i would definetly say avg of around 1 in 3 games.
|
|
By:
Messi is NOT the greatest player of all time.
|
|
By:
elis john - Messi has scored in three of the four finals he has played for Barcelona.
I dont think Maradona scored in a final in his whole career. |
|
By:
may have been said but surely a players greatness is based on trophies won by teams they,ve played for and on that note barc and the arggies are great sides sooooo has he won the most trophies
![]() |
|
By:
messi is prolific, he is consistantly the best player year in year out, destroys ronaldo everytime they play real when he bottles it as usual!
elis u sould like the type that will come on this thread if real actually managed to beat barca and claim ronaldo is better on that back of that one performance. where are u getting this info from that messi doesnt perform in big matches? hes RENOWENED for steeping up everytime hes asked. his team almost went out of the CL a couple season ago in russia and he score 2 goals in the last 3 minutes to feckin win the match. everytime he reaches the final in the CL he excels, he was even voted one of the players of the tourni in the last world cup irregardless of how argentina did, he is a phenomenon! tar! |

When you look at the players who have won 3 ballon d'or trophies -- Cruyff, Platini, Van Basten -- and you recognise how sh*t and over-rated these players were, you begin to realise how dump Messi actually is, having won the last 3 ballon d'or awards in a row.
I'd go as far to say that if he wins a 4th in a row, he's about the worst and most over-rated player to have ever played at any level. I could only see him in a worse light if he were to happen to do well at a World Cup. As for dominating the Champions League, don't make me laugh. It's not exactly on a par with scoring 6 against Northampton is it? I've seen enough highlight clips of Maradona to know that Messi won't ever touch him. And there are people on this forum who saw all of his games for Napoli and they will tell you, Diego cannot be touched. And as for those goals that Pele nearly scored, do you honestly think Messi could nearly score goals as good as that? Mugs. Wake me up when he's actually achieved something. |

Maradona is the greatest player ever.
A higher % of people who have seen both Maradona and Messi whilst adults would go for Maradona. Most people who go for Messi are 20-30. Like most things they think the best are around in their era. I'll take the opinions of people who are in a position to judge ie seen both at their best. |
|
By:
Maradona better than Messi, not best player ever*
|
|
By:
What does it matter if people in their 20-30's prefer Messi?
I doubt 99% of those older than that saw Maradona in more than ten games his whole career. I dont think it is all that clear cut that the older age group prefer Maradona anyway. Certainly by the comments that those who played with and against Maradona are coming out with on a dailly basis it looks like Messi is prefered by a lot of them and its increasing all the time. |
|
By:
it doesn't matter if they are 20-30 but human nature is usually to say the best around is in their era.
people who have seen both players at their best are in the best position to judge imo if rose tinted specs can be avoided. we'll have to disagree about who is regarded as the best ever. is there a reliable poll you can point me to? |
|
By:
Ardiles said Messi is better than Maradona, i heard that the other night.
Who else is there? |
|
By:
'I doubt 99% of those older than that saw Maradona in more than ten games his whole career.'
yes because we could only afford a radio in the old days l0l, you GOTTA be in your twenties ![]() |
|
By:
John where did you watch Maradona week in week out?
What are you looking for a list of people that have said Messi is best ever? There are far more than just Ardilles from that era that have said Messi is better. I doubt there is a poll on such a thing but I wouldnt bank on Maradona being voted above Messi by those over 30. |
|
By:
Anybody here that reckons they watched Maradona week in/week out is a Walter Mitty fantasist.
|
|
By:
There is not a player in the history off football who could control a ball moving at the speed messi does , it defies belief and the laws off physics
Its hard enough running past people at that pace without having a football to control its like its glued to his feet And to achieve what he has and do what he has does in this era off super fitness and high performance athletic footballer makes it even more of an achievment And you can understand maradonna sticking out at napoli as he was class no question , but for messi to stick out amongst the greatest team the planet has ever seen leaves no question in my mind he is the best ever |
|
By:
players are no doubt fitter and stronger these days but tackling was so much better back then than now
|

The argument seems to be that one can't have seen Maradona as often as Messi, ie week in week out. Therefore although Maradona was spellbinding in the matches we did see (usually in world cups against the best where Messi has thus far made little impression) and is what his reputation is built on, we must however assume he wasn't very good in the matches unseen by most, instead of the logical assumption that he pretty much was brilliant in most like Messi. A spurious argument imo verging on nonsensical.
We'll have to disagree about who would poll highest with people aged over 20 Jamdav. I've seen a 'who was the greatest' poll on here a few months back and w/o counting up, Maradona's name arose the most by quite a way iirc. |
|
By:
I don't really care who people think is the greatest, it's the people who say things like "Messi isn't in so and so's class" that need correcting. It is obvious to anybody with eyes and half a brain that Messi belongs in the same bracket of player as the other all-time greats.
But don't take my word for it, ask Johan Cruyff, Maradona, Ardilles or Jimmy Greaves -- players who were either great themselves or played against/alongside other greats. Even Pele, who would seemingly say that he is greater due to his world cup wins, acknoweldges that Messi is "practically the same level, technically" as him, which is quite a concession from an ego-maniac like Pele. Arguments about who is definitively the best ever player can't ever be won, as it is almost impossible to compare the best from different eras. |
|
By:
Don't listen to JamDav, he's a clueless Barcelona obsessed mug, who masturbates to the Messi posters pinned to his ceiling every night. His sycophantic defence of Messi is truly vomit inducing.
Everyone knows Messi is a flat-track-bully, we see it in every major competition with Argentina and we saw it again against Milan the other day. He only plays well when everything is in his favour, as soon as it becomes anything like hard work he downs tools and doesn't want to know. |

^^ fishing
|
|
By:
Not fishing, just giving my honest opinion. Anyone who disputes that Messi has problems at international level is definitely fishing. His form dips to the extent that he is unrecognisable as the same player who excels against inferior opposition in La Liga and against lower class CL opposition. What happened in Milan, where was he? A useless performance just the same as his usual for Argentina.
Looks fantastic against Atletico blah blah and some random Scandinavian side in the CL ![]() |
|
By:
Zzz, blatant fishing -- either that or brain damage.

the dza you're a clueless mug and a useless fisherman, so kindly stfu you clown.

Definitely brain damage. |

Both are fantastic players but Maradona to me had the wow factor.
Messi is brilliant but there is just something not there that Diego had. It's possible that because I'm older and more world-weary that I don't get as excited about football like I used to. |
|
By:
Exactly what problems does Messi have at international level?
How many times have you seen Messi play an international ? Be honest, now.. |
|
By:
wow great comeback
![]() |
|
By:
????? Messi doesn't have the WOW factor ???
Dear oh dear. |
|
By:
John -- I think World Cups used to be more exciting as, for most people in those days, their only exposure to some of the world's best players would be in a few games, every four years or so. Maybe a handful more in big European games at club level. So players who were special and made an impression at those tournaments became the stuff of legend.
Nowadays, there is no mystique -- we see the top players all the time. |
|
By:
No not to me.
Does Messi beat people? I see him get it on his left foot and veer more and more left until he gets space to pass or shoot. Rarely actually beats a player one one one. Lots of 1-2s and shuffling along to his left but nothing that makes one go wow. |
|
By:
I agree there DZA, totally
|
|
By:
I suggest that you give up watching football, John.

High Lander thinks Messi can't do it against good opposition, yet he has dominated against Man Utd and Real Madrid, and on more than one occasion -- two sides currently top of (arguably) the two best leagues in world football.
Hopefully, I am just being fished -- as opposed to Highlander having 'brain trouble'. |
