elisjohn - where did you see Maradona week in week out?

Messi scored more european goals tonight than Maradona did in his whole career at Napoli.

I've seen Van Basten, Messi,Cruyff and Pele, and Maradona isn't in their class at all.

its been messi for some time, maradona had periods leading up to '86 when he was poor, just look at him in '82, non existent

Maradona had a phenomenal tournament in 1986 and the chances are Messi will never have a WC to match that.

But some people need to get real with this 'one man team' cliche about Maradona.

From 1987 - 1994 Argentina won four international touraments in which Maradona played in one. Hardly a generation of idiots that he was playing alongside at international level as some would like to believe.

messi is a great player but also playing in a great team his whole career..

For me this is the common mistake people make. Obviously Barca have always been a big side but it wasn't until Messi got in the side that they embarked on this period of dominance.
Xavi played for Barca for 7 years before Messi came along and won only 2 trophies. Iniesta had only won 1 league title before Messi appeared.
Then suddenly they start to win everything. So yes, Messi is playing in a great side, but he is largely the reason they are a great side.

elisjohn, you think the standard of defending in '86 wc was of a higher standard than the champions league, which messi dominates each year?

champions league football has taken over from international football in terms of standard, if you hadnt noticed

And he's only 24 - let's see what he's achieved by 30.

Maradona the best for me ATM.

the only thing that i would say maradona had over messi is the fact that players kicked the f u ck outa him

did you ever see chopper harris try and break george best legs in that league cup match , messi never has to put up with that kind of tackling.
By:

When: 07 Mar 12 22:04
Defending has got better beacuse of the like of Chopper Harris being out of the game. Not worse.

best ever without a doubt. It is a priviledge to watch his skill week in and week out.Like most things we may not truly appreciate it fully until he stops playing.

i've heard it all now, you judge a player by watching them play, Messi's talent is way in excess of Maradona.

In fact it is mystifying as to how Maradona is even mentioned in the same breath, seems to be based on 1 goal in a world cup and f all else.

didnt liverpool concede something like only 14 goals in the league one season, not bad defending, anyway im not saying messi not a great player but for me maradona was better
By:

Yes and wasnt that Liverpool defence built on Alana Hansen - far more similar to the ball playing intelligent defenders we have now than the Chopper Harris types of the past.

Difficult debate to conclude, as rules have changed so much due to the game being driven towards a non-contact sport.

I remember Pele,Best,Cruyf and Maradona having lumps kicked out of them and half the time stayed on their feet.

Some poster hinted earlier that defences are better now, dont agree, but in fairness todays defenders have a job to stay on the pitch, hence the amount of space available.

Messi has been a delight to watch for a few years, but dont see how a comparison can be made now the game has developed more space, better pitches, and fussier rules to suit tv.

I wonder how many people with an opinion on this actually saw, even on TV, maradona play 10 or more club games.

the big difference is, with a sky sub now you could probably see messi play more times in 6 weeks than maradona was televised live in britain at club level in his whole career.

I think the game has improved in England and Spain no end - so it has to be Messi for me
The Champions league is also obviously of a far,far higher quality than the European cup in Madonnas day  , still not sure why Messi finds it tricky in the W/C though.

didnt he only play one world cup? i must say u have to be lucky as well in world cup.I think  most of the famous players who were also lucky enough to win a world cup may have been part of decent team. For instance zidan which i was old enough to watch him play n WC was a part of a well organized team.

And the current World and European Champions Spain were nothing until a few years ago either. Spain/Barca/Xavi/Iniesta adapted their own unique playing style which wasn't really perfected until 4 or 5 years ago. Therefore to suggest Barca are only great because of Messi is completely wrong. Barca wouldn't be as good without Messi, but they'd still be bloody good as their national team proves.

ps telling you something else george best really wasnt far behind messi if at all, bestie scoring around 20 a season for an average man utd team , wonderful goals and getting lumps kicked out of him, bogmires of pitches, and usually half drunk, Grin, wonderful player.

messi may be worlds best. but in my eyes he must prove him self around an average team. around xavi / inesta makes him alot better player. if he was to score 30+ goals in the epl then he would be proven in my eyes

he really needs to challenge him self in another league! dont see him doing much at argentina?

multiking - to be fair I've seen Messi make goals out of nothing so many times, so not sure that criticism is really fair, but see the point.

agree with multiking, the worlds top 3 players are at barcelona. spain is world champion and defending european champion, because of inesta and xavi.
