yes i agree and 5 goals this morning and i am not saying his not a talent and surely one of worlds best.

i just think he should step it up and prove it another league.

he is nothing special when playing for his nation? you have to consider having mids like inesta / xavi makes everyones life so much easier..

Someone rated possibly the best player ever isn't that likely to end up in an average team.

lets compare to someone like ronaldo not saying his better because i personally think you cant really compare...

he started at Man utd played all his career as a winger and he scored 20+ goals easily. and to compare carrick/fletcher to xavi/inesta is crazy.

now he comes to madrid and still scores 30+ and yes now more a more central role...

international stage fair enough he hasnt really done anything special but if your going to compare he has actually done more then messi has for his nation especially in euro 2004 at such a young age.

Maradona played in an unsuccessful Argentina world cup campaign in 1982 at the age of 22, as did messi who was the same age in 2010.  So at a comparable stage of their career, messi is well ahead imo.  People can't judge him on a world cup (s) that havent even been played.

Remember also that messi had the choice to play for Spain but chose Argentina.  Had he chosen Spain and won the euros and world cup, this debate would be over.

LEARNING TO  ACHIEVE  70 % OF  Keeping that round thing they play with is the best simple answer . No other side comes close to  ,,real  holding ball and not  GIVING IT TO THE  OFTEN POOR OPPOSITION ..... keep the  advantage    .....................don't loose the  BALL ........ROCKET SCIENCE  ?

maradona won the seria a for napoli all alone. they had never won anything. barca without xavi / inesta but with the greatest cant even beat osasuna ? same deal vs getafe no inesta 1-0 loss?

i just belive inesta / xavi is alot more important to barca then messi

NO QUESTION HE NEEDS SUPPORT HE ENJOYS FROM HIS  FELLOW PROFESSIONALS  , BUT THAT IS WHAT IS ACHIEVED WITH TEAM WORK  ....L eaves.. 3   ..4  ..5 ..men standing , walks away  finds his  man ,always very much in control  ,  a joy to  watch   ,,seldom watch  sh.t  games for much more than half an hour or so ...?his  awareness of whats  happening  around him  is  far better than i've   ever seen  before ,  and  I am  heading for  70  years  of age .Great to see what can be achieved ,...and  he  looks a  small man in  comparison to  some  others .

I'm sure there were another couple of reasonable players in the Napoli side that one their league. Having said that, if you put Maradona and Messi in Bradford's side this year they'd probably just about manage the league 2 playoffs.

yes agree napoli would have had resonable players but they were not expected to win the league.

barca winning the la liga is just expected with or without messi?

most   naturally  talented   players , usually run the game at their pace  ,never without knowing the capabillity they really have  .

One  jim baxter was a very good , player hated training  ,was snail pace slow  ,but the ball was always  at his feet,  he told a story one time , about pre season training , where he was a lap and a half  behind all the rest   ,when challenged by the boss  ,he said you know  I DONT GO ANYWHERE FAST BOSS   ,cant  cope  with this running game  .....by the way now I'M  here can I ASK YOU FOR A RAISE IN WAGES  AS STRUGGLING A BIT  ,  it cost a  extra tenner a week  ,to  give a pep talk to  J .B ,    REAL  GENTLEMAN  IN THE GAME AT THAT TIME ?

Whilst Maradona was undeniably brilliant at Napoli, i think people seem to think he went there and they won the league at a canter in his first season, but far from it. He went there in 1984. In his first season they finished 8th in a 15 team league and didn't even qualify for europe.
In his 2nd season there they improved to 3rd and it wasn't until his 3rd season there that they won Serie A. This qualified them into the following seasons European Cup where Napoli went out in the first round!! And that year they came 2nd in the league.

And to those who are claiming that Napoli side was a one man show, their squad also had Careca (60 caps for Brazil), Alemao (39 caps for Brazil), de Napoli (54 caps for Italy), Ferrara (49 caps for Italy), Bagni (41 caps for Italy) and another italian international Andrea Carnevale. This wasn't a team of no hopers.

What Messi is probably the best of all time at  and is a quality that has become important in the modern game is making space in and close to the box to get shots in.

Messi
Maradona needed drugs to get on the pitch and admits being addicted from '91 however

Maradona first became addicted to cocaine in the mid 1980′s and by the time of his retirement in 1997, after 17 years as a top player, Maradona’s health was poor. He suffered a cocaine related heart attack in 2000, did some rehab in Cuba, and suffered a further cocaine related heart attack in 2004.

All through his peak years. Undoubtedly an exceptional footballer but also a cheat.

Everybody knows that Maradona scored a hat-trick in every game he played -- all goals being solo-runs, finished by flopping his nob out and tapping the ball over the line. Yes, he was THAT good.

And let's face it, when it comes to the European Cup, Maradona can teach Messi a thing or two. Outstanding record.

I for one am sick of Messi not scoring in every game. He is even playing badly sometimes, wtf? Supposedly the best ever, ridiculous. I don't think I ever saw Georgie Best have a bad game -- ok, I never saw him play, but that's not the point. By not seeing him play, he never FAILED to impress me, and for me, that is the hallmark of a great player.

Look, when Messi can have a World Cup as good as Georgie Best or a European Cup as good as Maradona back in the day, then we can talk. Til then, he can just f**k off with his "important" goals against mugs like Real Madrid and Man Utd.

PierreLaRogue. I've never read such a load of tosh in my life. Name ten players in history better than Messi, and as you say that he's not even close to top ten, I demand that you name twenty. Mug.

i know some mug fishermen would come on spouting utter bilige after the matchLaugh

for all intensive purposes, he played no worse than most of the players on the feckin pitch and was absolutely sublime again at times!

the bloke doesnt score a hatrick and u mugs are out in force, what u think maradona didnt have off days?Laugh not to mention the fact messi NEVER gets injured no matter how hard they hit him!

I'm sick of all this tosh, messi in an average team in the premiership like everton would hit around 20 goals per season,

If you put Carlton Cole in the current Barca team he would hit 30+ per season

He is the best in the world but his team mates get little cr

So Carlton Cole would get more goals for Barcelona than the likes of Villa, Ibrahimovic, Sanchez, Bojan etc have?

What a complete load of rubbish.

There have been plenty of great players like the ones named above and Ronaldinho, Henry, Etoo. None of them got anywhere near the goals Messi has.

Give it a break - Carlton Cole.
By:
cherrypicker
When: 30 Mar 12 00:47
OK how many would Carlton Cole get playing in the current Barca team ??

He would hit 25-30 per season if not more, look at the team they have now Bojan is pants, Ibrahimovic is not a prolific striker
By:
JamDav1982
When: 30 Mar 12 00:52
Ibrahimovic not prolific? He has virtually a goal a game this season and had a very good record the seasons before he joined Barca at Inter.

Fact is Ibrahimovic is in a completely different league to Carlton Cole and he struggled to hit twenty goals. Even Etoo had his best ever goalscoring season away from Barca.

What a clueless thing to say 'Carlton Cole would get 20 - 30 for Barca.

The mind boggles.

exactly, nobody has gotten the amount he has no matter how good they were PERCEIVED to be. youre reference of carlton cole is fooking farcical. u may aswell throw messi on a par with andy carroll if youre gonna talk like that. every exceptional player needs a good team and everyone praises iniesta and xavi to high heaven week in week out, everfyone knows how exceptional they are, they just happen to play alongside a player who has taken the game to new heights the likes of which has never been seen.

even when he has a 'bad' game hes still the best player on the pitch. remarkable given that his fellow players, from all teams regard him as one of the greatest ever. if someone cant see that messi is absolutely exceptional, then they are blind. this is not my opinion, this is a fact of life, the guy is a freak of nature, his game has absolutely no weaknesses, dribbling, passing, speed, strength, and most importantly consistancy, he practically always comes up with the good, something u cant say very often about footballers. to top it off hes a team player, he plays for his teammates!

no weaknesses!

All I'm saying is that in  the current Barca set up the average Premiership Striker would hit 20+

Perhaps I was going overboard by saying Carlton Cole 30 Goals

cherrypicker I think you may just be the most clueless person I have ever come across on this forum.

The fact is Etoo, Ibrahimovic, Villa, Sanchez etc have not nearly matched Messi's scoring yet you think Carlton Cole would get 20-30.

Wow.
