Only need to get within 190, right? Silly

It's almost impossible to criticize Root and unthinkable to leave him out however bad the run in my view , class is permanent and tbh form can turn in a heartbeat so ride it out and wait for the rebound.

Greenidge and Fredericks had plenty of low runs like Root but they were a million to be considered leaving out , you just have to ride out these spells for proven players and not over react by chopping and changing when there's no need.

Nice bit of trading Whispering   Happy

Against another team perhaps Root can recover form but Bumrah has him on toast.

Middle order not resolute enough today. Would like to see Stokes bat at 4 and break the right handers up.

Good test all the same.

Sometimes you just have to give it to the player. Bumrah was special today. England did pretty well imho. 30/3, 40/4…. Remember those days?

indeed...a rare failure in context and would have typically made less playing differently..

Root is properly out of form but nowhere close to the chop such is his class...see Smith and Labuschagne both having struggles of late against what would have been considered less than top class attacks (Smithy obvs played a hand 2nd inns WI but even so)

Very different situation to last week's 1st innings deficit, tough to plot a path to England victory.

Even with that peach from Jimmy!

Jeeeeeeez, not sure about that DRS overturn!

Panic over, thinnest nick before pad.

tough to plot a path to England victory

Reverse hex strongly in-play so far Cool

Boy-oh-boy.

Gill using a lot of DRS lives up here today. Millimetres.

Jimmy on fire.

(Not a fan of umpire's call, but that's for another day.)

Well, what might have been in the first hour...

Two wickets then Gill given LBW and reviews, not knowing he's nicked it.

Not given LBW and umpire's call by 1mm on review.

Then edges through keeper and first slip.

Made the most of his early good fortune, fair play.

This has been a turgid four hours, nothing happening unless/until we're 40/0...

Morning all. On the pith last night so just tuning in. Did Gill play well eventually?
By:

Morning, fella.

He did, to an extent. Played some lovely shots, as per his easy-on-the-eye talents, but still not convinced.

Could be a tad of bias, due to us essentially having him out three times for next-to-nothing, but it was no Jaiswal knock, for me.

Yeah both he and Iyer have talent. I think he is a special case, more than Iyer but doubts linger. India have so much talent it is tough.

Commentators talking up England’s chances, maybe it’s a ratings thing.

Well done to England gif putting up such a spirited performance and unearthing these players with the right attitude. Rehan, Hartley and Bashir have taken 8 wickets in an innings in India. Who’da thought it?

Been impressed with Duckett. He is proving a good foil for Crawley, little and large, left and right.

If one had cahoonas...

We can lay England at 7/2 to not chase 399, in India, in the fourth innings! Crazy
By:
Aptdemon
When: 05 Feb 24 04:23
Jeeeeeez, typing that made me remember the Test against NZ not very long ago where we OPTED not to chase 250 (ish) in 80 (ish) overs!!!

How this side has transformed.
By:

When: 05 Feb 24 04:31
We can lay England at 7/2

...make that under 3/1.

What have they done to everyone's heads, England?!
By:
Aptdemon
When: 05 Feb 24 04:35
This chase wouldn't just be a record for England, not just a record in India & not just a record anywhere!

It's so preposterous, I reckon it'd probably be a record chase in tennis and snooker, too.

Boy, have England been on the wrong side of umpire's call this match.

Gill alone, we're almost within 100.

Rohit's catch was sensational, credit where it's due on that front.

Take those chances and you deserve all you reap.

Feels as though we're done.

Needs a century stand from the two oaks, here.

I think England have been magnificent this series. Root has been disappointing but the young spinners a real bonus.

Most countries would have crumbled but the pitches are not as bad as we thought.

Series is set up nicely

an interesting conundrum. The Umpire gave him out and was thinking he was caught but did he say not out LBW as the 3rd umpire said? Surely if he gives him out, and he is lbw then umpires call is out.
By:
Aptdemon
When: 05 Feb 24 08:18
Ump thought he'd smashed it, has to have definitely thought it was not out LBW.

I really think England’s batting has I rattled. They ard better than J Diaz’s poorly performing second string. If they win the toss they have the ability to put up a string total.

India’s bowers are much better, well though the England attack have played. Ashwin and co have been flustered. Bumrah made the difference.

I was thinking of Under 280/290. England put themselves in a position they had no historical right to be in. Unlucky umpiring, a couple of looses shots and a lazy run out pulled the rug on an even more impossible shot at Glory. Last week was inCREDIBLE. Today was IMPOSSIBLE yet they got remarkably close to a real shot at glory.

They were talking odds and percentages. 70/30 said Gill. Gough had it at 90/10.  I had it at 100/0. It has never happened in Test history in India all things considered. England got closer than they should have. Another magnificent effort.

Just joined the action. Not sure wtf is going on yet.

I think the new caps will be good for India and am taking a punt on over 306.5

Looks like a batting pitch but the reverse is there. You’d fancy Bumrah on this. Hard to call what a good total is. Wickets mag fall in batches but once you’re in you can cash in.

First time I have seen this kid whose average is up there with Bradman and Headley. I have to say he looks a serious talent. I saw young Pant and this kid could be a better batsman. I would like to see what he is like on English and Aussie wickets of course but looks something special already. He has a younger brother too! Iyer is gawn imho and Shubman Gill better sort himself out too.

im sure he played for bangalore in the ipl when he was 16 or 17 he has obviously scored tons of runs to earn his shot at test cricket

Didn't catch much cricket yesterday but heck, we would've been way ahead of the game 47/4 Surprised

Offered 315/5 after the toss, we'd have taken it (from what I saw from Sarfaraz & Jadeja and what everyone said about the pitch) but gotta be a tad disappointed as England.

These two wickets welcome, sub-400 and it is game on.

Root's turn, this match.

Sorry, R Ashwin, that was a very blatant transgression.

Pretty impress from these two. The pitch looks decent once you are in. Rohit and Sharma’s wickets were wasted. I cannot see England coming back from this…… but I am not betting on it. Had a few run line bets yesterday but nothing big.

Proper ground and pound from India
