Opportunities will abound with wildly inconsistent England.

Mike Atherton " This is a batting pitch.   This looks the flattest surface that we've seen so far.  Bat 1st pitch"

Eng win toss and bat.

Any moisture will dry up quickly in that heat.

Interesting market moves post toss, Eng came all the way in and then went all the way back out!

England bowling is very thin so the batsmen need to deliver. A draw would be no great surprise.

THREATLESS!

Eng must go big here!

Well done Athers for calling the pitch right, so many of them get it wrong and sometimes massively wrong!

It a great batting pitch. A very slow pitch.  Outing in it for the bowlers at all. Draw must crash at some point but how dry is the wicket? Everyone sure this is a result venue. Will the pitch break up?

Oh on England odds against

I'm envious of those who got some tasty draw backs in, 29K matched at 7.2 Angry

4 balls bowled so far that would have hit stumps.

I have covered the draw now just in case but hope to lay it off. All red on SA but will keep an eye out for any signs of reverse. England should bat SA out of this.

No way can this be a draw. I am going to lay off my 3.95 draw soon I think. McMaharaj is getting some little spin before lunch on day 1

3s is always very hard to penetrate being a crossover price.

Why do you think it will be a draw Cardinal?

Yes I think so. There is probably an underlying feeling that the draw needs to be covered but Maharaj has got a couple to spin already. The thing is at this stage of the match SA are not out of it....yet. If there is no chance of a draw then the only other option to an England win is a SA win.

I really want to cover my SA red now although I think England will win the match. As usual probably the best move would have been stay on England and walk away. Degeneracy rules!

It is easy to bat on at the moment. This pair have shown they have what it takes at Test level certainly mentally. I was impressed with Crawley second innings last Test in that he almost took it to the opening bowlers even though he only got 29 he put their bowlers on the back foot making it easier for the new batsmen and also Sibley who was scoring incredibly slowly. I think this will be England's future pair. They have not been tested today but again I was impressed that Crawley figured out he couldn't pull on a slow pitch.

Mikey said the pitch would get faster tomorrow so runs might come easier. I just hope England bat well after lunch. Need to time my draw lay and SA back!

Do you think it will be a draw Cardinal?

I didn't think he ashley said that. He did state the pitch was a batting pitch. But the implication to me was it is in no way a bowling pitch right now.

Sibley is a friend to draw backers and next in Joe Denly is too.

Ok so we hold on to the draw back and see if it challenges 3 at the same time keeping an eye on the ball vis any reverse

im no good with tests, how can it be a draw when england going great?
By:
Whisperingdeath
When: 16 Jan 20 10:54
well if the pitch stays flat and lifeless for the bowlers then SA will also make a good score first dig. England will bat long in the second innings to make sure SA cannot win the game and they run out of time to bowl SA out. But this pitch looks like it will dry out so may well spin later on in the game

Just a little slow plays a fraction early and it is in the air.

Tried for a cheeky draw back. Pitch still difficult for the bowlers!
