swagman,
Do you have a criminal record? with a name like that I thought you might be one of them? I am confused! |
|
By:
Has this ever happened before on the 1st day of a Test. Team batting 2nd 47 runs or any amount of runs behind, with wickets in hand.

born in uk of irish parents dw. patriotism/nationalism is something i have always struggled with. however always found it easier to support our cricket team than football team. i'm in my forties so am use to us being rubbish most of the time. for me, as good as aussies were in the 90s, nothing compares to the windies of the 80s. malcolm marshall (rip) my all time favourite.
my name on here comes from one of my favourite horses, ourjollyswagman. he werent great but he was good at plumpton. i love the gaff tracks, especially national hunt ones. |

Thanks for the explanation Swagman
and it makes perfect sense! I was just naturally confused as this is a cricket forum ( Ashes ). Whilst I was bored with nobody to talk to yesterday I also came across and posted this snippet. Think it might amuse you ![]() There is also a book now to go with the film Fire in Babylon Whisperingdeath 05 Aug 15 18:11 It was the net session before the third Test at Kensington Oval in Barbados and the two teams were practising alongside one another. Miller watched as the West Indies gun batsmen, Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes, Viv Richards and Clive Lloyd, had a bat against the top bowlers, Andy Roberts, Michael Holding (who a few days later was to deliver to Geoffrey Boycott perhaps the most famous over of all), Joel Garner and Colin Croft, and when done the octet retreated to the dressing room leaving Larry Gomes, next on the list, to warm up against the Bajan net bowlers brought in for the day. Easy? The net bowlers, according to Miller, were Malcolm Marshall, Wayne Daniel, Sylvester Clarke and Ezra Moseley, a quartet which would compete strongly with any fielded in the history of the game – such riches. And players now are worried of the damage that can be caused by just one bowler of high pace in Mitchell Johnson. |

what a stat.
Only 8 balls would have hit the stumps in the 18 England overs! |

Expected of course as in Aus played at everything they shouldn't have Batting much worse than the bowling was good, and it was pretty damn good....

i saw that too wd, frightening stuff. a while ago i dicovered an espn channel on tv with highlights from old matches. i happened to tune in when they were showing some of the 5 - 0 drubbings from 1984 and 1988. paul terry was facing, my memory might not be as good as it once was, but i thought didnt he get his arm broken? my timing was spot on, the first ball i watched was him being injured. even in 1991 (i think) hick was going to be the saviour, it soon became apparent that he had a problem against short pitched bowling, he looked scared. that team was so good the laws of the game were changed (re short pitched bowling), something i strongly disagreed with. as good as warne and mcgrath were i know who i would rather have faced.

I watch the youtube of Holding v Close for amusement and Holding v Boycott for awe.
Best side that ever graced a field Swagman. A bit like Ali would have beaten Tyson. Not even the team of '48 would have got much change out of them. |
|
By:
i am sure i use to hide behind the sofa just watching it!
back to this game and series, who at the start of the series honestly thought we had a chance of beating them? i certainly didnt. |

This is the most I have been embarrassed watching the ozzies. It's a bleeding horror show.

I don't think most of us thought England could take 20 wickets to be fair. We knew Aus middle was soft but we expected pitches like the one at Lords, flat and scrubbed. Wood has been a revalation, Finn a pleasant surprise to have back but most of all Stuart Broad has been magnificent. Being dropped from the ODI side has worked wonders!

By:
We should have played like we were playing in a 50 over game. Would have got more runs rather than this dithering prodding mess that we saw this morning
|
|
By:
did think all the talk of 4-1 and 5-0 was nonsense. england still pretty hard side to beat at home
however been surprised how inconsistent oz have been with the ball especially after they absolutely demolished the windies. mind you hazelwood is inexperienced and starc nothing like the same with a red ball |
