ebul it was Ireland’s decision whether or not to join the battle to destroy the evil of Nazi Germany , that was their decision
But they didn’t , the sat back and left it to Britain
That Britain fought in every corner of the world and in every theatre of that war in that great undertaking is to their eternal glory , and that Ireland sat back , safe , and with its arms folded is to their eternal shame

Or you could say they were smart in not offering sheep for a war they knew Britain would have to fight for its own survival and in the process automatically protect Ireland.

It’s very easy to sit on the sidelines , waiting and criticising while others have to go to war , the people and countries overrun , the murder and torture and repression and the horrors of the gas chambers and there were those who stood back and watched on , and those who became saviours , and gave their own lives , it was a glorious thing that Britain did

Yep, the USA found it very easy to sit on the sidelines.

The USA should have come into the war much earlier , imo
In that sense Britain is the greatest of all countries involved in WW2
And don’t foget it was Germany and Russia who started WW2 by invading Poland and dividing it between the two dictators

For someone who purports to like facts just how do you make out Russia started the war? Britain was involved way before them.

Charlie Russia and Germany made the pact in August as allies to take over Poland and split it between them
Germany invaded , Britain declared war , and Russia as Gernanys ally invaded Poland and the two dictators split it between them
What difficult to understand about that ?

Two Cockney geezers serving in North Africa under Monty got a bit detached from their regiment and ended up on the borders of the Sahara, they were lost for weeks.
At deaths door they see a tree in the distance and as they get closer they see it is draped with every kind of bacon, crispy bacon, rashers, all sorts of bacon.
Gaz started running to the tree shouting we're saved,we're saved but as he gets to within 5 feet he is gunned down in a hail of bullets.
Den drops down on the sand and calls across to the dying Gaz,"whats happening mate?"with last breath Gaz says "run mate run,it's not a bleedin bacon tree,it's an ham bush".

I'll get my coat.

Surely even someone of your limited intelligence can see that if Britain declared war on the 3rd September 1939 and Russia invaded Poland (even though they didn't declare war then) on the 17th September 1939 then Russia didn't start the war as you said: And don’t foget it was Germany and Russia who started WW2 by invading Poland and dividing it between the two dictators

If you're talking about families who lost relatives in both wars then you best fold your cards. Our family lost so many it almost unbelievable. Yes fighting for Britain.

Back to facts though.

Most Irish do not consider themselves to be British but in reality they are British  they are in fact more British than 90% of people living in England

I quoted the wrong post.

I'm not thankful to Britain. There were ways they (we) could have avoided the wars. The loss of very brave men on both sides of the conflict is so sad. As for the families they left behind it was worse as they could grieve.

Whether we could have avoided WW2 I doubt very much , not sure about WW1
Of course everything is easy in hindsight but thank God we brought the evil of Hitler’s Nazi Germany to an end ,
In Britain we faced the last enemy , the last enemy is death

Charlie you may not be proud of what Britain did in WW2, I don’ t give two hoots about you or what you think
I am proud , get that through your wooden head
