Yes isn’t that very generous of the Irish government, but they are living here, in the U.K.
we have the responsibility to find jobs and healthcare and homes and schools and social services and benefits etc That is the responsibility of the UK to those 8 million, but the Irish pm gives them a passport , very generous Of course we know who they will be more grateful to and it won’t be England Strange isn’t it ? |
|
By:
So lfc you are complaining about someones grandparents being Irish using up your actually non too precious resourses of housing, healthcare etc?
Quite likely one of the grandparents was Irish. Strange isn,t it? Take the staffy for a walk lfc and come back. |

I don’t want to say any more on the subject pl , just to say when you have so many people in a country , whose main allegiance is not to that country but to a different country. That can be a recipe for disaster, a very dangerous thing

You see that’s why I’m worried about someone waving an Irish tricolour outside the Queens residence at Balmoral
And protesting against Brexit , that worries me it doesn’t seen right , any sensitive person would agree |

Here’s peckers first statement about WW2 England was bombed, bust , desperate I expect you would be grateful we came to assist .... lfc stop quoting me out of context..again you twist things to suit your own agenda, a filthy bigot and racist agenda set by vermin. I never discussed the war per se in any shape or form. I merely replied to your poison regarding the Irish and how we helped build Britain after the war. You truly are a repugnant odious vile little cretin. |

To an extent Uble,Ireland will be affected, agree it isn't right to be waving a triclor though outside Westminister, cringeworthy.
|

By:
nonsense pecker , I haven’t said anything bad about the Irish per se
|
|
By:
We need to leave the EU , quietly and as calmly as possible
Even leave in Oct and then gradually over the next few years change things , we need Ireland to help just a little bit That really shouldn’t be too much to ask ? Don’t forget we have to remain on these islands as neighbours so we should try and get along as best we can |
|
By:
It is THIS COUNTRIES decision to leave, nobody else.
Still if the South can help with the Border issue, you have a point pa lapsy, lfc1971 |

By:
How can it help? The tories are doing what are best for their party. The backstop isn't even the problem with them, they just want votes. The South ought to be ok justabout,Northern Ireland will get hammered as things stand imo

200,000 Irish fought in WW1. Even though officially neutral 70,000 Irish fought in the British armed forces in WW2. Absolutely correct and we should be thankful for their involvement however that's not the end of the story. When WW2 ended and those of the 70,000 that had survived returned home they were treated as criminals. nobody would employ them and they were refused unemployment benefit. Many had to leave Ireland just to survive. The ROI government in 2013 apologised for its actions and issued pardons to all involved. The ROI might have been neutral but they remained hostile to the UK in our war against the Nazis. |

akabula
I did know about the treatment they received when they returned to Ireland. The ROI might have been neutral but they remained hostile to the UK in our war against the Nazis. I don't see any evidence for this and think they went as far as they could as a neutral country to help the UK. Quite prepared to debate this point. |
|
By:
So why did they feel the need to treat the survivors of the 70,000 in such a manner?
|
|
By:
I think that was more a historical ideology against the UK not a support for the Nazis.
|
|
By:
I didn't accuse them of supporting the Nazis although, as an aside, the ira did.
But the problem the ROI had was the Germans bombing irish shipping and the possibility of an invasion. In that respect they did aid the UK by allowing us access to irish airspace but the actions after the war were unforgiveable but as you suggest maybe done as an act of appeasement of the masses. Still a shameful act though. |
|
By:
Agree it was a shameful act.
I don't really want to push it but don't see how the Irish were hostile toward the UK during the war (as you said above). |
|
By:
As I said their actions against these people were a disgrace but why did they feel the need to do it?
As regards hostility during the war they were happy to hide behind the banner of neutrality until they needed our aid. They refused to enter the war or at least support the UKs effort simply because of their attitude to the UK. Hostile not by action but by inaction. |
|
By:
I'm not sure all the Irish people that fought in the war were treated equally badly. I think it was the ones that left (deserted) the Irish army to fight for the British armed forces that were persecuted.
Ireland had been neutral since the 1930's and carried on throughout the war. There were political reasons why they didn't fully support the UK war effort but they did support us in many ways. If there is such a thing they were a neutral country biased toward the UK. |
