Aspro, I've been on the wrong side of 20 stone (approx 3 years ago). I started doing 5:2 on 2nd Jan 2016, this morning I weighed 13st 8lbs and have done so for around 3 months.

I love food and enjoy a drink and know that apart from 2 days a week I can (within reason) eat what the hell I fancy, which when counting calories is just not possible. I know we are all different and there are no one size fits all methods but the flexibility and freedom permitted by 5:2 plus the other reported benefits attributed to it, mean that for me, it is the best way to lose weight.

Amazing weight loss Kit Kat..very well done.
Spot on regarding the 5-2.Be very good for two days and let your hair down(kind of)the rest of the week.Doing the two days  i find is also very empowering .I'm not the most disciplined of people yet have no trouble in keeping to the 600 cals on Monday and Thursday and as you have amply proved.. IT WORKS.

On most days I only eat between 1.00pm and 6.00pm. I watch my calories, too. I usually have around 1200.

Some days I eat what I want and stuff my face Blush

It works for me Happy

I hear ya KKD... just hit my own worse (17 stone) and boy am I feeling it; even getting out of the car is becoming a chore!

I started working on a calorie-controlled diet and noticed it does actually work but if the 5:2 works then who am I to say otherwise. I'm just not sure I could fast two days a week.

Well done!

No diet will work if you don't stick to it.
If you're happy to do the 5-2 diet for the rest of your life then you've cracked it.

When I first got with my good lady over 15 years ago she was eight and a half stone and I was just over 21 stone. I weigh about the same now so I have not let myself go. On the other hand she's now nine and a half stone. Gave her an ultimatum the other day to shape up. I'm still the same weight as when we started the relationship, she on the other hand Mischief

That's the beauty of it Dr C, I honestly can't see any reason why I should need to stop doing it.

If I was in your shoes KKD I would have an upper and lower limit. When on the low eat every day and when touching the high go back on 5:2 - best of both worlds.

I've set my own target to stay between 13 and 14... gotta get there first though

One drawback with 5-2 fasting is if the person suffers from migraines.
They're pretty sure to start one either late on the first day of their fast or the second day.
And for others with lesser food allergies they'll feel lousy.

If you eat a wide range of foods, and then start a fast which doesn't set you off with a headache, that's evidence you're pretty well clear of food intolerances.

Am trying to lose around a stone maybe a bit more,i've lost weight easily before when and how I choose usually just through better eating..recently through ill health I have MS  and my mum having terminal lung cancer turned to eating junk food for around 9 months put on two stone. In the past just by cutting back calories I would've lost that weight easily usually 2 pound a week, strangely I can't lose a pound even though not eating more than 1800 calories aday, can't exercise but do 20 minures of walking aday if feeling ok..maybe I will have to try this fasting..

The Atkins diet works. No carbs at all including fruit which contain sugar. Losing weight is easy on this.

A similar diet is the fat diet, live on eggs, cheese, milk, yogurt, avocados, nuts.
lots of veg. You'll lose weight guaranteed. You might die of clogged arteries before you finish but the weight will come off fast. No you won't.

Another is the plant based diet, no animal products or oils, live on starchy foods.
Eat as much as you like, potatoes grains beans rice corn lots of veg some fruit. This is a good diet for life, stick to it and it'll keep you as slim as a racing snake. The health benefits can be considerable.
And of course you can eat some fish or meat occasionally without doing any harm like at Christmas.

^What's interesting there is that the third diet is almost the opposite of the other two, although they all work.
You see we don't burn stored glucose and stored fat at the same time. We use up the glucose and then switch to burning fat.
The first two keep our bodies burning fat(which is converted to glucose)
While the plant based diet keeps us running on glucose from carbs (which we're meant to) and doesn't put the fat on in the first place.
Of course any fat that has been accumulated will be burned off during sleep.

You have to go easy on the sugar though, I recommend restricting sugar to only what you get from fruit.
30% of sugar is converted to fat, and the damaging VLDL cholesterol that gives us fatty organs and clogged arteries.
Bear that in mind next time you set about a tub of ice cream or anything else loaded with sugar.

The last one that you gave me the nod on is the healthiest and as you say most sustainable long term, the high fat diet is easy to stick to and a good kick start for weight loss due to the initial results though most people will have sugar withdrawal and need to supplement electrolytes which I did and was fine.
By:
DenzilPenberthy

What I've found is you don't miss the meat and dairy and you don't crave sugar either on the plant based diet which is a big positive long term for junk food bingers.

Stage 2 diabetics have to be careful if they embark on a low fat diet like the plant based one.
With the fat coming out of their glucose receptors, the insulin their body produces starts to work better and less medication will be needed.
It's like removing lumps of fat from a drain cover which was stopping the water from running away.

With their own insulin doing a better job, medication on top could take their blood sugars too low.
Which could be disastrous, better to under medicate than over medicate.

Aspro, you won't have to do the 5:2 for too long. After a while (could be 2 months or less) you should be able to switch to 6:1 and still maintain your lower weight. It really depends on how much weight you want to lose, and what your plateau is. I was happy with the weight I'd lost after about 6 or 7 weeks, but noticed I wasn't losing any more. So I switched to 6:1 and I didn't put any weight back on. Just stay the same. Thats what I found anyway, and I know many others have done the same.

I switched to 6:1 - and I didn't even know the phrase existed!  But it has worked OK for me.  I should say that I have also been doing more physical work and, being busy, eating less.

Good luck with whatever works for you. I started cutting right down on cabs a while ago eating only fresh food. I still drink most days but I've lost four stone now and never felt better.

Although not completely banned I rarely eat chips and have stopped rice completely. White bread has gone for Burgen bread as it has less carbs.

It's about picking what works for you but I love this low carb eating as I've never felt I've been on a diet at all.

Processed food is a massive no no for me nowadays. Well done if you're losing weight and stick with it.

I don't pretend I haven't been eating better on non-diet days, but I have found that the less I eat of carbs and sugar the less I want it.

Think of tea and coffee.  I am sure most people used to drink it with sugar when they were young.  I stopped taking sugar in it when I was about 18.  Other people later, some still take sugar.  But once
you stop and get used to it, it tastes horrible with sugar in.

I think you are right Bigmo, in that the carbs and processed food are the bad guys.

If you are reducing carbs sharply, then you will eventually have to step up on either fat or protein.
Your body has to run on something.

Neither fat nor a lot of protein is healthy.
By:
Dr Crippen
When: 09 May 18 11:02
It's better to cut down on fat, protein and sugar, and leave the carbs alone.

Especially fat. Every time we consume fat in a balanced meal it goes straight to forming body fat which only gets burned when we run out of glucose.
That's unless we've almost eliminated carbs and we're always in fat burning mode.

I'm thinking about getting some almond flour (very low carb) and making my own pizza. anyone tried it ?

I thought I'd mention allergies as it's hayfever season and I've been on a plant based diet for 5 weeks today and I've had no symptoms yet despite being an allergy sufferer since adulthood.
Another change I made was trying an old wives tale remedy 'local raw honey' which I take around a teaspoon per day, might not be connected but coupled with the new way of eating I'm allergy free and have taken no antihistamines.

That's good to hear Denzil.

Many common ailments can be cured or vastly improved by simply switching to a plant based starchy diet.
It's not surprising either with the effort required by our bodies to digest meat products.

It gets worse as we get older because we lose stomach acid and can't digest meat as well as we could, and that causes indigestion/heartburn.

No wonder many who eat a balanced diet are knackered all the time.
