Understandably too, MM. Some family are being given the worst news possible, and some cameraman is going in for a close up of their reaction.

Totally shameful behaviour from the media. Definitely deserve a kicking.

aye, sky doing me head in, asked woman this morning was she concerned she woke up of her own violation, raher than fire services waking her up.
just looking for blame/headlines, they do not help. |

Surely people will go to jail for this , looking at that blog link Gin posted earlier
Basically for 3 or 4 years detailing why the place was going to go up in flames and was a death trap Dont think 'lessons will be learned ' will do with this one |

Council should fork out for hotels if need be, some people have lost everything. Condolences to all involved and respect for out emergency services.
I hope in some way social media can raise enough for each person affected to get them back on their feet. |

The managing agent for the flats didn't HAVE to invest in sprinklers etc. It's arbitary for older buildings.
Depends a lot how much money they were sitting on. I suspect they had a pile of cash in a reserve fund and residents wanted it spent but wasn't been. |
|
By:
Isnt this the Kensington Ward that was an old tory stomping ground until only the other day when labour won it?
Im sure I heard suggestion earlier that residents were implying it was cuts that did it. |
|
By:
Residents told they'd be safer if they stayed inside
![]() If i ever found myself in a dangerous situation I think I'd rather trust my on instincts |
|
By:
fireman very brave to get to THE TOP of the building!!! Saved loads. Initially they couldn't get past the 12th floor - so how does that work out?
|
|
By:
You're supposed to stay inside IF you have a fire door or are infirm.
No fire door and able to leg it, best to do so, especially if you're on a higher floor. |

A creep from the tory party batting it all away and kicking the can down the road. How about all the other tower blocks???

I have an idea....
Get ALL the local Charity shops to give their stuff to those who have lost everything. They won't. |

How did that cladding get past the health and safety when they did the testing on it in the lab, surely as soon as they put a match to it in testing would have shown the problem

How Long was the Fire going Before Brigade Were called ?? Seems strange an Exploding Fridge would cause such a Fire.

In my old Job of clearing away house contents to an auction house. We would come across the odd house with unusual contents.
In one flat we emptied the occupants bedroom. It was littered with beer cans, on the carpets, in the bed, on every surface... drink bottles and cans. The drinker was also a smoker and the carpets were littered with burnt matches. In my mind's eye I saw the alcoholic getting blotto and tossing matches to the ground. How on earth can you legislate for a situation like that. Someone coming in at midnight, drunk, putting on the chip pan and falling asleep? It's very easy for a grill to catch fire. Putting all these people in a highrise is criminal - there needs to be a height restriction. 4 floors max. Possible to survive a fall? |

no money,no houses one day,now there,ll be millions and houses found everywhere

How on earth can you legislate for a situation like that.
Someone coming in at midnight, drunk, putting on the chip pan and falling asleep? You can't but what seems incredible here is that within minutes the entire building was engulfed in flames. there must be ways to prevent that happening and one wonders how many more buildings there are like this one? |

RIP those poor souls that died.

this has happened before
lessons learned were not and were ignored you would not believe the huge gaps in fire regs, practice, implementation, checks and building practice |

The description of the cladding they just gave on the TV was far worse than I'd even imagined.
They've a vertical layer of polystyrene which burns, with a layer of foil (which also AFAIK burns), no protection, then a deliberate GAP to help airflow go up and feed and spread flames, then a metal plate to cap it all off helping to duct fast moving ember filled air up the building onto the polystyrene above. What could go wrong? Surely they must have spent a few £100 sticking that setup on the side of a test building, got the bottom panel going, and then watched what happens? The disgusting John Snow on C4 news just tried even this into a political class war point scoring thing.I've not watched C4 news for a while as it's always like that. |

If you think Snow was bad, Cathy Newman took it to another level with her party political broadcast/interview for the Islamic party

|
By:
If the setup just described was accurate and it was the polystyrene inside metal plates burning not plastic outer plates, that would actually point the finger at greening of the buildings, not cosmetically making them look good for the benefit of "rich folk" as the total &&&& on C4 news just said.
|
|
By:
I believe that cladding only has to be flame resistant on the surface!!!!!
|
|
By:
It'll all come out eventually but the design as explained on TV there was very dangerous looking even to my eyes.
They didn't even cover the polystyrene and left a gap to the metal to avoid "damp"? If I tried to light a block of polystyrene I'm sure I'd find it far harder if it was sealed off to airflow even on the top, rather than being exposed on all sides except the back, and having ducted rising air rushing over it allowing constant oxygen supply and embers from below. If that's way it was it's like they'd added bellows to help it. I'd automatically have assumed such panels would be sealed units you couldnt' easily set alight ![]() |

must have been a sight for air passengers flying into Heathrow - like wtf ??

Very nice to see our very concerned monarch having a nice day out, on expenses, to visit victims of the horrific Manchester atrocity!
Perhaps she will have another good day, with a token visit to survivors, and relatives, of those killed here! How about chucking in a billion pounds, to show you really care? Have a whip round with the rest of the t*****s including Kate, what's her name, with 10 billion pounds, including the royal sprogs, reputedly worth £5.3 billion, and they haven't lifted a finger yet! Tap up Prince Andrew, who has been pretty much disowned by the family, and is struggling to survive on his £82 million pittance! |

Trying to think what would stop these tower blocks going up - it's already been envisaged in the film DREDD. storm doors are deployed. It's wind that whips round the building that feeds these tower fires. You cut off oxygen and they are controllable.
I thought at first a large fabric tarpaulin over the whole block? But that's completely unworkable. But in america they have shutters on the outside of windows. A recess could be made above each window to allow a slide down shutter to be deployed. Just enough gauge to cut off oxygen from outside when a fire is detected. A localized response for each flat. and a masterswitch that can be activated by the fire department at the ground floor. Hoses will not reach 24 floors up. |

North Kensington is north of the Westway dual carraigeway, plenty of tower blocks and dodgy council estates there, also encompasses the huge Wormwood Scrubs prison, Posh Kensington is south of the Westway, think North Kensington was probably just called so to make the area sound more upmarket. Other areas tend to do the same, like South hampstead which is really Kilburn or surrounding areas and nothing really like Hampstead itselt.
