A sort of metallic extrnal cladding seems to be the sort of thing those cheap modern hotels they throw up are covered in, I'm guessing with insulation.
Worrying! Next holiday I'm staying in B&Bs. Or on Facts couch, once he moves on those refugees.

The managing agent for the flats didn't HAVE to invest in sprinklers etc. It's arbitary for older buildings.

Depends a lot how much money they were sitting on. I suspect they had a pile of cash in a reserve fund and residents wanted it spent but wasn't been.

Injera,

The managing agents don't " INVEST " anything into these flats. They don't own them, they " MANAGE " them and they take their " FEE "off every charge made to the Leaseholders!

With regard to the cladding, I don't even want to go into polystyrene, I heard on LBC today the cladding was only put up to make the monstrosity of the building look better for the posh houses! and get this the Leaseholders would have had to pay for that! If this is wrong could someone kindly confirm because it is making my blood boil!

The cladding is 2 layers of aluminium sandwiching an insulation layer.
It's purpose is basically waterproofing albeit with the look of the building taken into account.
No more or less what every builder/refurbisher hopes to achieve.

Ask Khan. It's happened on his watch, he's in charge. He's seems more interested in swapping insults with Trump than doing domestic stuff.

Quite unbelievable!!!!
Did Khan build the flats?
Did Boris, come to that?

Is there anything you won't try to make some sort of political point about?
How the F can the mayor of London be in any way culpable?

Even by YOUR standards that post is appalling, Crippen

Theresa May’s new chief of staff was one of a series of housing ministers who “sat on” a report warning high-rise blocks like Grenfell Tower were vulnerable to fire for four years.
A former Chief Fire Officer and secretary of a parliamentary group on fire safety today revealed successive ministers had had damning evidence on their desks since 2013 and nothing had happened..

Who wouldv'e gussed eh,not that surprising considering johnson got rid of 10 fire stations as well in london cuts,cuts.cuts...

You heard on LBC. From who? Some caller? So that makes it the truth? As I say above the description above was of a sheet of what sounded like unprotected polystyrene then a gap to stop damp then a cosmetic metal (aluminium) plate. If it was just the cosmetic metal to make "the rich" happy, I very much doubt any of this would have happened, it's the insulation (presumably for green/resident benefit reasons) that would have burned. But to me from what I've heard it seems a shocking design that shouldn't be used in a first world country.

It seems to be a no brainer from the description of how it's spread that it was the cladding, it all fits together. THe original design was apparently to have it fireproof between flats, and they've gone and wrapped the block in a flammable material!

I'm not defending the cladding, it sounds like this is shockingly dangerous design mixed with incompetence and disrespect for the residents, but the sad knee jerk politicisation and "rich bashing" on tv and above is as sad as the "banker bashing" you used to get on every single question time for 5 years solid.

Seen these fires in those modern buildings in Dubai look crazy on the outside but everyone usually gets out via the 'inner' part of the building stairwell etc. What isn't explained here is why the inner of the building looks to have been engulfed as well? Staying in your flat waiting for the fire service seems to be duff advise for buildings which have this cladding.

I have read reports that the fire may have been started by a fridge freezer and that makes sense.

There have been numerous fires over the last years caused by fridge freezers, washing machines and tumble dryers. Some were due to a fault by Beko fridge freezers and I had to ring up and check that my fridge freezer was not among the defective ones.  But since then I have taken no chances and keep the door to the kitchen, the living room door and my bedroom door shut at night and when i go out.  I have an alarm in the kitchen and in the hallway so I feel pretty safe, maybe.

Again my fire notices say to stay in the flat until told otherwise.

Do you remember the fire safety adverts of yesteryear that said get out and stay out?

I heard on LBC that a caller said the cadding may have been put on the building to make it look better for the surrounding private home. That doesn't make it the truth but it doesn't make it a lie either.

The building is a 1970's concrete monstrosity. I am not sure if it is a "Brutalist Building" or not. I gather it was ugly. Why would you put aluminium cladding with polystyrene on wooden battens?

If it was just the cosmetic metal to make "the rich" happy, I very much doubt any of this would have happened

Although I deduce from your comments you less than F. All!

It is not the fault of people in nearby houses. Nobody has said they are at fault. This is a tradgedy that could and should have been avoided. Do you know you cannot use step ladders on a building site unless you get an expemption that is rarer than rocking horse sheite. Concerns were raised by the residents and who answered those concerns?

It is not Banker Bashing. It is poor bashing! They are the ones who suffered and lost everything but I have to say. I am very sorry for the Bankers!

This is poltical and yes it is disrespectful to be talking about this before those people have been grieved for but this is a prime example of the needs of the few not the many and I for one am not having it anymore!

What amazes me is how this was passed by building control, we currently have the builders in doing an extension front and back of our property. At the front of the house the foundations are to a depth of one meter while the original building sits on fifteen inches at best ! To the rear we're going to have to go down two meters because our neighbors have a small bay tree and we have a small pear tree. A ridiculous amount of overkill ! If there was an earthquake our house would fall down leaving the extensions Crazy

what people in construction, black trade industries call life saving regulations ,mp,s and business quaintly call it red tape, tyhe sort of red tape they want to burn in a huge bonfire when we leave the eu,heard yesterday that vastly quickly overated ,over promoted barwell who,s sitting on a report exposing all this stuff, has a rule that you can only implement a new safety rule if you drop 3 others or as our mp,s quaintly call it ,you can only introduce a new layer of red tape if you drop 3 previous layers of red tape,or for the sake of starting an argument you could call red tape peoples lives
