Apparently they'd stuck this insulation onto the outside of the building with a cavity between the insulation and the building.

The insulation work that I've seen done on houses does not have a cavity, it is goes straight against the building without any gap.

If there's a gap, that would make the fitting of this material even more dangerous in the case of fire.
As this situation seems to bear out.

Unfortunately if they used EPS or XPS (polystyrene) then this would cause the fire to spread rapidly as it is combustable, there are several materials available though, you're right there isn't usually a gap it's bonded to the outside wall, but it would depend on the original construction.

Can imagine the number of bodies inside to be significant.
Was unreal, just wrecked around 600 lives and all those who live in high rise around the country.

Watching the BBC on site today drew out some real characters down there I must say.
One kid came on swearing and others are pointing to some sort of conspiracy and said they were treated 'like vermin'.

On another note, it seems the building is still standing....which makes you wonder about the twin towers again Mischief

Exploded FRIDGE ?

resident says neighbour said his fridge exploded. My own fridge gets overheated at the back. it gets red hot. Very believable. Usually with tower block fires it's Calor Gas cannisters or chip pan fires.

the BBC still saying UNKNOWN. Can't we trust the residents of the tower block and what they say?

I never watch GMTV, but i had it on this morning, watching this terrible tragedy unfold, Am i alone in thinking the only reason Suzannah Reid is on there, is for her looks ?...The questions she was asking, was unreal.!!!..
The leader of the council came on and she said, ''Do you know how many fatalities there are'', the emergency services won't know for weeks, he was more worried about how much Bird he'll be doing, or who he can pass the blame on to...
She then told a woman who fled with her children, ''There are many fatalities'', to which she never heard her properly and asked her to repeat what she said,
after a pause, she said, ''i'm glad you are all out and alive'', possibly because she had the producer screaming down her earpiece,
''Don't Fu c king say that to the poor woman, her neighbours are still in there''......
shes useless..

Too much guessing and supposition going on hereCrazy    Crippen a perfect example - "an investigation into the blindingly obvious" - all based on hearsay and cut and paste.

Last week. I said to my family it's a wonder that the Isis Guys haven't moved onto Arson.
the Casino fire and massacre in asia a fortnight ago?
One guy and a match can kill more than a van driver. It's lucky this is an accident. If it was on purpose they would have blocked the exits.

Whoever gave the thumbs up for that insulation work needs looking at.

Also why weren't the smoke alarms working, and as others have pointed out why wasn't there a sprinkler system in place?

People need to make as big a stink about this as possible, and to point fingers so that it won't happen again.

Well if Khan he isn't responsible for directing council policy who is?

And I don't see any contribution towards the thread from you either fife.

You seem another more interested in using a tragedy to get at another poster than discuss it.

Crippen - I don't have anything to say because simply I do not know the facts of the case, but more importantly given your posts neither do you. You merely spout opinion and hearsay as fact. Still carry on, if it makes you "happy"

Well I know a darn sight more about buildings than you do blackbarn.

You've simply used this tragedy as a medium to take a swipe at another poster.

Because that's what you come on here for.

I know you're not allowed to criticise Response Services, whatsoever, in this day and age,
but I'm hearing continual stories of Fire and Police ordering residents to stay, in the safety of their homes,
instead of getting-out.

there was recently a fire in a similar block just around the corner (trellick tower on goldborne road). residents have repeatedly warned the local council who decided to do nothing.

crippen uses a tragedy as a medium to blame the mayor of london then projects on to other posters. what a pathetic excuse for a human being.

It appears that this is standard procedure for high-rise fires.Plain

I saw it from around 4AM on the news coverage and I think there was just one hose via unmanned extended ladder piddling on the bottom third while the fire blazed away the rest of the building.

I must admit Id have thought it would have had far more on it but as they say, they cant access above floor 12 I believe so they probs just wrote it off by then.
Horrible to think those hoping for rescue were doomed all along (unless it turns out firefighters went up, but I think they said they didnt get higher than floor 21)

Showed a close up of the cladding, but though obviously hard to tell it looked intact in places, perhaps the covering of the cladding was possibly the accelerator which spread the fire so quickly.

I make a little bit more than that casemoney.
The people I saw today deffo wont have had insurance and will be bottom of the line of possibly a number of people dipping bread 'above them'.
One Guy lived nearby and came out with his prized items in a shopping trolley because he had no insurance.

This is not as unlikely as it sounds. Since the 1990s, the refrigerant FREON was discontinued because it was a factor in ozone depletion in the upper atmosphere.
The replacement is the hydrocarbon isobutane which is volatile and forms an explosive mixture with air. Just needs a leak in the refrigerator pipework and a spark from an electric switch for example.

It occurs that, if foul play is ruled out, it could have put ideas into the heads of certain factions!

From the few pictures I've seen, it doesn't look like insulation boards and render. It looks more like tin/plastic cladding?

Typical of the tree huggers. Lets heal the ozone by putting a potential bomb in every house.Crazy

Mate of mine is a fireman. He reckons the fire spread out of a window and then caught the plastic cladding and went from there upwards  and back in again. He said it's virtually impossible to fight in that kind of tower block.

What are the reasons given by the residents as to why they were worried about a potential fire risk.
There was a letter sent to the council, does anyone know the specific concerns.
