Why use stuff that isn't highly fire resistant on the outside of buildings?
Because it's cheap surely. |
|
By:
A lot of speculation, no-one can be sure at this point, but, there needs to be complete transparency on this from the council, people cannot hide here and there needs to be accountability here.
Who did the the spec of works, who selected contractor, who carried out work, who inspected it during works and after. Got to be transparent, we don't want another closing ranks operation, like hillsborough. Bloody hell, we hear about H&S all the time and how its full of jobsworths, how can this happen in this day & age? It's beyond belief. |

I have been in that Block ,it has or Used to have a 24 Hour concierge the whole Block will be Alarmed to the Hilt, leading to a Big panel where the Guy used to sit ,was there no Sprinkler System ??

There are another 3 massive Tower blocks ,very Simular Just down the road on the Edward Woods estate at First I thought that was where the Fire was ...

Councils prosecute private landlords for failure to fit smoke alarms and service them yet the buildings under their own control are death traps.

Just Unbelievable

You'd never believe anything like this could happen with the emphasis on health and safety that exists.
An accident like this should never happen, The ones responsible should be jailed as an example to other public employees. People have died through their negligence. |

fire took hold very fast
wonder what cheap materials builders used |
|
By:
Bloke on the telly, just said the cladding on the outside of the building went up like paper.
|
|
By:
don't they test for fire risk
|
|
By:
Polystyrene is what they use on the outside of buildings for cladding. Then as someone said earlier they render over it.
But once it catches fire the thin layer of rendering won't stop it. It just drops off. |
|
By:
this building could easily collapse
|
|
By:
According to the bloke on the telly just now, the cladding was the reason the fire went up the sides of the building so quickly,
|
|
By:
Firefighters and paramedics unreal Imagine having to go in to that Building Searching for People ,the 9/11 Collapse must be on their minds

Good point about the private landlord stuff dr C...in Scotland there are a raft of must dos for landlords, easy for councils to promote and demand regulation, but is different when its out their pocket.
Case money...I heard the community group say they were demanding a 24/7 concierge due to the amount of criminal activity in the area, so it sounds as if the concierge was no longer in operation... |
|
By:
Why the feck is it ok for people to live in high rise flats, that Dont having sprinkler systems, and WHY have the fire brigade only got water jets that canT reach the top of the building, water jets only fit to extinguish a dolls house, JUST CRIMINAL ! .
|
|
By:
sadly, probably one answer to that alfee....£££££

By:
Another council joker on the telly trying to justify the sit tight and stay in your flat advice.
He said the last thing the fire services need is trying to get up the stairs to fight the fire, while people are coming down the steps try to get out. Where do they get dopes from? The ones who ignored the council's advice and got out, are the ones talking about it now, where are the people who followed the council's advice? |
|
By:
If the building's on fire surely the first priority is for everyone to get out as quickly as possible?
We've just seen proof that a fire in a building of this nature can't be contained by the fire services. What more proof do they need to acknowledge that the advice they're giving to stay in their flats is ludicrous. |

emergency services told them to stay in flats

surely each fire should be taken as an individual case ?? and just asking folk to stay in their flats in a fire like this is
mind boggling. i am guessing those are the ones who perished, also whilst i am seething, what are the elderly and infirm doing on the higher floors. ![]() |
|
By:
Just had another ''expert'' on the telly.
He said there will have to be an investigation into why the fire spread so quickly. An investigation into the blindingly obvious? Where were these investigation experts when they were nailing highly inflammable materials to the outside of the building? |
|
By:
Was awful when i turned the TV on 1st thing this AM, a raging inferno no other way to describe it, still on fire nearly 12hrs after it started! Heads must roll for this, only inspected by Fire service recently, must have used cheap unworthy materials in this cladding, what a dreadful dilemma for those above the fire!
|
|
By:
Case money...I heard the community group say they were demanding a 24/7 concierge due to the amount of criminal activity in the area, so it sounds as if the concierge was no longer in operation...
They were originally put in to Keep drug Dealers and Muggers out of the Blocks I used to visit all the Blocks in that area ,Adds to the tragedy if Cut backs have added to the causes The area around there used to be Very Rough, a part of Notting Hill rarely seen .. |

It appears that this type of cladding has been blamed for other serious high-rise fires around the world:

I saw a house at auction recently which I couldn't understand why it went unsold, as it appeared a decent house at an attractive price.
That had outside insulation. I wondered at the time if there was a problem with this insulation due to it being at the auction in first place, because it was never advertised with an estate agent. |

|
By:
Apparently they'd stuck this insulation onto the outside of the building with a cavity between the insulation and the building.
The insulation work that I've seen done on houses does not have a cavity, it is goes straight against the building without any gap. If there's a gap, that would make the fitting of this material even more dangerous in the case of fire. As this situation seems to bear out. |
|
By:
this is horrible - someone commented that it was like wrapping the building with plastic??
