Calling chit chat`s resident art expert Velasquex and the forum`s unsurpassed film critic G2D. Well guys, what is your much valued opinions of the recent film starring Timothy Spall as the legendary landscape artist??
I watched it the other night and although interesting and enjoyable, at times I couldn`t understand a word Spall was saying. I didn`t know Turner was a Brummie. I had always thought he was a Londoner. Kept waiting on Oz to make an appearance.

No story - plot. A multitude of (grunting) monologues. In essence, boring. I had trouble with Spalls dialect as well (reminded me of of Bridges as Cogburn) The sex scene was ridiculous...
Fantastic cinematoghraphy, beatiful scenery. In fact, actors were'nt needed. Too long as well. A real pity for me as i love Mike Leighs work normally. 4/10. |

I haven't seen it.
I thought the best films I ever saw about artists were called "Artists and Models" back in the 80s. They were about David, Ingres, Gericault and the French revolution. They were a mixture of drama and documentary. Martin Jarvis did the narration. They were low budget films but they were so well done. The Gericault episode was sublime, especially the bit with the man trying to control the wild horse. I really think you can't make a good drama film about real artists as the main point about art is the art itself - the so called drama is all bullsh!t. Best straight documentary I've seen is the JIM DINE film about EDVARD MUNCH. Having said that...Andrei Rublev is generally regarded as a great film and... SCHALKEN THE PAINTER is proper scary if you can track it down...it's a ghost story. |

And...eh...best film I've seen about any "artist" is the Tony Palmer film about WAGNER starring Richard Burton - sublime piece of work with some of the best scenes in cinema - ever...get the full thing, the full series, not the edited film.

I recall seeing a docu-drama about Klimt. Now there was a life well lived. Enviable drawing skills too.
The Munch one was very good too Velasquez. Haven't seen Turner. Not inspiring according to some of my friends. |

Glad you saw that, Foinavon - Jim Dine got very agitated about all the drama surrounding artists like Munch and Van Gogh, etc. The bit were he talks about Munch's "The Sick Child" is really something...and they showed Munch's large paintings that were left in the garden, at the mercy of weather and birds - they are all covered in bird sh1t to this day.

Remember reading the Jean Renoir book, "My Father" years ago - there is a great anecdote about Renoir Snr. being drunk and peeing in the street, then being chased through the city by a policeman and an ever-growing mob, just like you see in Benny Hill sketches.

Surprising they can't clean off the guano, perhaps they think it adds to the artwork.
There was a documentary about the theft and recovery of a version of "The Scream" from Oslo museum which was interesting but not really about art as such. |

Two films I remember from the 1990s as being fairly good. The first starred Tim Roth as Vincent Van Gogh and was about his relationship with his brother Theo, I think it might have been called Vincent and Theo.
Another, quite obscure and I've never met anyone that's seen it, was about Stuart Sutcliffe and called Midnight Angel, which mixed jazz, rock and roll, Richard Strauss and Jack Kerouac to describe the short painter life of the ex-Beatles bass player. It started Peter Leeper as Sutcliffe, who is now a poker player, I believe. |

Renoir was a brilliant director g2d. You can buy a terrific box set from China 33 discs or thereabout for approx £40. A few don`t have English subtitles but still great value. Le Grande Illusion being my favourite. I have his book too.

Vel, I actually have the complete mini series of Wagner starring Richard Burton. Great drama as you say. Very hard to get nowadays.

Don`t know what you guys think but I liked Lust For Life with Kirk Douglas playing Van Gogh and the Agony and the Ecstasy with Charlton Heston as Michelangelo.

Need to check out the Munch film Foinavon. Turner is watchable but nothing inspiring that you need to rush out to see.

30s were indeed a Golden Era guinness. Don`t laugh, but I love the Paul Muni films from that era with I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang being my favourite. He was nominated for Best Actor that year but didn`t get it.

G - What about this Breaking Bad series, any good? Friends in pub have been telling me it`s brilliant. Advice please before buying. Do yourself a great favour mac - buy the total Series NOW. You will not regret it. It is absolutely brilliant. You will not have seen anything like this before. I guarantee it will blow you away. The very best thing of its genre to have ever been made imo. As you watch each episode, you'll think ' it can't get any better than that/ how can they ' top' that ?' - but they do ! |

Argy crumpet is some of my fave, Hairy motts asunder... Muni lost out to Wallace Beery, i tink? Or was it Charlie Laughton as Henery? Either way there was some serious competition around at the time. I will never ever tire of watching films fro m that period.. I always thought Muni would make a great Igor to Karloffs monster in Frankenstein.. |

Facts - a lot of good judges have said the same about BB. I see Series 1-6 for £40 is that all the episodes or was there a 7th season?

The Champ it was. So as i say, Muni was up against it.
Laughton, as Quasi, was the finest piece of acting ("Big Marie, she made me deaf - you know") i ever saw on screen. It actually scared me to death. It also made an everlasting impression on me (film wise) that i will take to my grave. Absolutely outstanding... |
