Would I be correct in assuming that, with the captain absent from the cockpit, there would still be two people presnt?  Or is it at all possible that the co-pilot was in there on his own?  Surely not?

I ask because, presumably, the door can only be opened from the inside and it would be ridiculous to leave one person locked inside at any time in case they suffered some sort of seizure.

New york Times & Cnn reporting......

Investigators trying to determine what caused the crash of Germanwings Flight 9525 have made a startling discovery in an audio recording, according to a New York Times report: One of the plane's pilots was locked out of the cockpit before the crash.

"You can hear he is trying to smash the door down," a senior military official involved in the investigation told the newspaper, describing audio from the cockpit voice recorder, one of the plane's black boxes.

"We don't know yet the reason why one of the guys went out," the official said, according to the Times' report. "But what is sure is that at the very end of the flight, the other pilot is alone and does not open the door."

Lufthansa spokesman Klaus Gorny said the company has no information about the report but is looking into it.

The Times' report is a "terribly shocking revelation," CNN aviation analyst Peter Goelz said. But he and other experts cautioned that it's still unclear what could have been going on inside the cockpit.

Possibilities range from a medical emergency to something more nefarious, CNN aviation correspondent Richard Quest said.

French authorities revealed Wednesday that they'd been able to access audio from the recorder, even though its external casing was damaged.

Wonder if other passengers were helping to smash down the door. Sounds like a horror film scenario.

Any rumours that #4U9525 pilot was Anning Wong are incorrect. He is  a virtual pilot on an online simulator called Vatsim. Not real.

He couldn't. The cockpit has a keypad where you have to enter the code to gain access, but that can be disabled from the cockpit in case the code is entered under duress. I would imagine there will be new safety protocols out of this where if one pilot leaves to go to the toilet, one of the crew must sit in the cockpit so it is never one up.

Looking more and more like `suicide choice` by the pilot according to aviation experts.

He was quite a new employee by all accounts.

Horrible last few minutes knowing your flight is now doomed.

Obviously a lot of speculation, but pilot suicide or pilot suddenly became unwell look very likely, rather wait for the facts.

It's seems foolish leaving a pilot alone at the controls and locked in.
That should have been covered.
I hope it's not usual practice to leave one pilot locked in by themselves.

Illness was very unlikely, they said, because a conscious decision must have been made to place the aircraft on a gentle downward trajectory.

No idea on the age or any other personal details on the co pilot.

Surely the pilot locked out would name the other pilot when was trying to gain access?  Knowing the aircraft was going down he would know the recorder would record.  The authorities must know who was in the cockpit and who was outside, just not saying yet.

It has to be locked to stop mad passengers. If the co pilot needs a pisss hes got to leave the cockpit

Read yesterday when they revealed the pilots air experience that the co-pilot was quite young (22 or 25), obviously highly qualified but thats v young to man a plane with 150 people on board, imo.
