Travelling in a plane is just like travelling in a car, only you are higher up.

As is hourly calculation Coachbuster. You are looking to compare one mode of transport where only a small percentage of the journeys made will be less than an hour in length compared to a mode of transport where the percentage of journeys made under an hour is far greater.

I've acknowledged the miles traveled is flawed but as a comparison between 2 modes of travel that aren't similar it's about the fairest way of doing it.

in which case marrcee  (and using your method ) then flying is far,far safer .

I wonder if we are getting the truth about this crash. Many years ago Egypt sent 20 Air Force pilots on a training course in USA to fly helicopter gunships on a standard civilian flight. The pilot received a message that the muslim brotherhood,or an associated group fighting the government, had kidnapped his wife and family and the return plane had better not arrive in Cairo. It crashed ,due to pilot error and this may have similar undertones. Just a theory, no more.

How did this guy know the captain would leave the flight deck and go for a comfort break during this flight? Only a 2hr 15min flight. Most people don't need the toilet during such a short space of time.

He had been out on the lash with him just before they took off in Barcelona ?

They had already flown from Dusseldorf to Barca that morning, he probably would have done it on the outward trip if the pilot had left the cockpit & who's to say there may not have been a third trip after that, so the chances the pilot does not take a leak all day are probably slim.

By use of what is still a very flawed comparison it could be said Coachbuster.

What is absolutely true though is that the average human being is more likely to die in a road accident then they are likely to die in a plane crash.

statistics are strange arnt they

flying is safe and you have more chance dying on way to airport

similar stat ...when you buy a lottery ticket you have more chance of dying
before the draw than you have of winning the jackpot

Marcce - i spose you could break this all down even further  such as - driving on motorways, country roads and urban -

i would stick my neck out and say that motorway driving is probably as safe as flying  ,but only hour for hour  and not distance .

Motorway driving probably provides the best possibility of meaningful comparison to flying given that most longer journeys will be via motorway.

It might well come out as statistically safer in some ways but when I think of some of the rush hour motorway journeys I've had I'd take being sat in a plane over them every single time and I don't like flying either!

yeah, not sure why they even call it rush hour

All of this would have been avoided if they'd heeded my warnings and provided jars for the pilots to pee in Angry

That may be true mac, but I would rather be in a car at ground level than in a plane 30,000ft up
if we start to have engine problems, or the driver goes mad, one would have to think this is going to be a worse result in a plane

Do the pilots have a loo near the cockpit ? I have never seen a pilot use a loo during a flight ..Or perhaps I  never noticed.

Ive seen it lots

German police have seized possessions belonging to a co-pilot who apparently crashed his plane in the French Alps killing all 150 people on board, as they investigate his possible motives.
They said they had found a significant clue, according to media reports.

doubt if it's just plain suicide tbf

more likely a run in  with the company - (maybe how can he damage the company name ?) ,his superior or maybe as suggested some belief , all i know is the last thing i'd want getting on a flight was a  nutter pilot Shocked

German media has also reported that Lubitz received treatment for a "serious depressive epsiode" six years ago during his training to become a pilot.

They have found sick notes from his doctor, including one for the day of the crash, which was torn in half. Should doctors be able to directly inform an employer of someones mental illness? in certain jobs absolutely.

there was another report yesterday re the flight about a conversation in the cockpit

the view was that he became abrupt after discussions about the arrival into dusseldorf, possibly having been told he wouldn't make the landing but that the capt would

Reports say he was treated for depression, had a recent break up with girlfriend, other pilots looked down on him, gave him a nick name also because he was a steward before becoming pilot. All that and a weak mind pushed him too far I guess. I don't think it was a planned suicide, I think he just snapped. he couldnt plan on the captain leaving the cockpit. Shame he didn't snap on his own instead of bring 150 innocent people with him. An utter selfish act.

Yes not a lot of consideration for the passengers, they were innocent  even if he detested his work colleagues

Before I fly in future I will have a chat with the pilots, make sure they are feeling happy, not too many problems
..mrs left. large income tax bill, etc

Or anything that may drive them to ending it all before we have reached our destination...

Better to wait for the next plane

I agree Angel, although I don't think this has happened before

Will his work colleagues feel a little guilty over this?????

They may have been laughing at him thinking it was all a joke.....but this man was taking it far more seriously than they ever imagined

Perhaps he didn`t intend to crash the plane at the beginning but wanted to take control, in his mind `a big guy for change etc` but then realised his life/career would be over, there would be court cases and media waiting for him etc so he just locked on to the controls rigid. There was a skidding noise heard on the recording before the obliteration impact, did he try pulling away at last moment? who knows.

I was listening to an air crash investigator Gery, and he was asked if he had ever dealt with a suicide pilot crash like this one and he said unfortunately he has on a few occasions. He said the last one was an African airline i think in 2013 and a few before that one.
By:

I would believe him, the rules need to be tightened up

Of course everyone has worries including pilots...but once it reaches the suicide stage it is serious, no one suicidal should be flying
a passenger plane

Depression varies, but no, no one diagnosed with depression should be flying.

I wanted to be a bus driver a few years ago, but I guessed my depression would bar me so did not apply, not that I intended to wipe out a bus load of passengers

Flying a plane is a lot more serious

I am sure there will be many changes now it has happened to a German airline. There will have to be a medical database for pilots authorised before every shift. Doctors will have direct access to updating this. Of course this will not stop any pilot from harbouring their mental illness for fear of repercussions.
