A precedent, kept very quietSad.

I hope there are changes. Not everything is predictable. But in this case he was being treated by his Doctor for depression, there needs to be
better communication

it's no comfort to the relatives involved i know ,but the chance of getting a suicidal pilot flying your plane is in the millions .

how do you totally eliminate risk in everything  ? - a lot of suicidal folk might not want to share their feelings

".... the chance of getting a suicidal pilot flying your plane is in the millions"

According to the US Aviation Safety Record, ONLY 8 crashes in the history of flight are thought to have been caused by pilot suicide.

Apparently this pilot has suffered depression and battled his illness for some time, and hindsight is a wonderful thing, but lot of questions now being asked how the hell was he ever allowed to fly a plane if he was mentally ill.

Sometimes it's not possible to tell if someone has a mental illness, especially if they want to keep it secret.

I wonder which is a more common factor

Depressed people becoming pilots
or
Pilots getting depression

his doctor knew  indeed gery, maybe there should be certain career paths depressed folk shouldn't follow   - there are a lot of depressed folk out there - but not many commit suicide and even fewer  involve others , esp 150 others .

i'm still guessing there are deeper motives that dpon't nec'asy include depression

I'm starting to get a bit worried about all of this ...
what about tube drivers, train drivers, coach drivers, anaesthetists, surgeons, GPs, dentists, hairdressers (sharp scissors, razors) - the list is large ... in fact anybody that you trust your life with and they, not you, are in control. Or oncoming lorry drivers. Or biochemists.  Or nuclear scientists.

I'm not for a moment saying this is not a very serious topic - I just don't know how a balance is struck.

Good point Coachbuster, seems you don't need to be clinically depressed to murder someone.

It seems now that the co-pilot bought 2 x Audi's recently. Just wish he had driven himself off a high cliff at great speed in his new car instead of using a passenger jet full of ppl to do the job.

It does not seem like murder since he also killed himself....

I would question this man's state of mind......this does not appear normal behaviour to me

Suicide is arguably (depending on your view) self murder.
I think e.g. the Catholic Church is pretty convinced it's a kind of murder, for what that's worth.
On topic, the german word for example for Suicide is Selbstmord, which is "Self Murder".

But anyway if this guy did what they say he did, he's 10000% a murder.

"More than 400 body parts belonging to the 150 victims have been found, but not a single body intact"

How desperately sad for their families trying to cope with the situation to hear that news, just heart-breaking.  They say the passengers only realized the terror seconds before impact, because the terrified screaming could only be heard in the last moments. A burn-out depression and he kills 150 people.

Reinforced/bullet proof

Did he have an axe? no axes on planes are there? he would have known it was fruitless and perhaps he kept reassuring the passengers it was not as bad as it looked etc...the descent was quite gentle so to a point he might have fobbed it off as nothing to worry about until just before the end.

The axe is in the cockpit so he'd have had a job on using it.

The pilot and attendants will have known what was happening, you can feel when a plane is descending without even looking out a window, never mind someone with 6000 hours Sad

THere was some incident just recently where something (I can't remember what) happened on a 747 and they also had to enter the cockpit unorthodoxy but managed that time,it's strange I can't remember the papers mentioning it again.

Germanwings captain Patrick Sondenheimer tried to break into locked cockpit door 'with an axe' as plane was descending

Wonder how the can tell its the sound of an axe? Some reports say its in cockpit others outside, others depends on the airline where it is.

the microphone was in the cockpit behind a reinforced door, the screaming would be pretty loud to be picked up. Ive been on plane when it hit a air pocket and all hell breaks lose with screaming and even prayers! It might be comforting to think that passengers didnt know what is going on, but it is obviously bollox, they are all looking directly at the captain trying to break the door down while plane is descending

The tragedy occurred because of one man's mental state

The question that will be asked was whether this should have been recognised or not

If it reasonably could have been, he should not have been flying, if not, then it's a tragedy

Although perhaps rules could be made saying that there must always be more than one person in cockpit

I think most airlines already have such procedures in place- certainly in the US after 9/11.
Whether it would have prevented this is another matter. If he was determined enough
he would have surely found a way.
