You are also not put on this planet to fester on your lonely own in a flat.

You need to throw yourself out of your comfort zone Moonbeam, by that i mean stop avoiding other people. Once you get to understand that other people are faking it and actually mentally retarded in one way or another thenyou will soon begin to feel better than yourself.

Take a job as a taxi driver and get into character, everyone fakes it out there.

Broaden your horizons Moonbeam, we know you don`t like socialising but you have the money to literally `get lost` for a few weeks. Go book yourself a trip.

Moonbeam is getting lots of good advice

I think he is someone who chose his life 20 years ago, a professional gambler
I think he has enjoyed a lot of it particularly the poker and been reasonably successful

But now it has become much harder, he barely scrapes a living, he finds he has isolated himself, and he is hating his life

But he only has 2 options
1. Carry on as he is, and hope his gambling looks up
2. or change it
and only he himself can do it

He can go on the dole if he wants, he is entitled to
But he better check on how much savings he is allowed or he might find himself worse off, he has to hide anything over the limit
For this he will get a princely £70 a week or near that I think, but will be pushed

The choice is Moonbeam's, no one else's
and yes life is not always easy

Moonylad - get in with some mates of old - go out to a few pubs ,have a good laugh .

you don't have to mix with strangers that way

otherwise nowt wrong with  insular living  Cool

Personally I'd rather do a part time job than sign on. The ****s want to know the ins and outs of all sorts before they give you anything. I'd have to be on deaths door before I asked them for anything. That's why I feel no guilt when I give them next to nothing in tax.
By:

i think the benefit of signing on for most folk is so they can get their top ops and 'extras'

Housing benefit being the biggie .

#i have yet to meet anyone with their own gaff who has signed on when there is PT work available

it wouldn't make sense .

why worry about 10 -15 hours stacking shelves ? if it pays your way and that's all you have to do .

I have met refuse collectors and cleaners who are far cleverer than me ,not that that's saying a lot Laugh but don't worry about what job you do -   some of the dimmest feckers on this country are those in the top jobs  - they were simply trained to pass exams

which explains why this country is a shambles

I agree with Coachbuster, you have no idea how unintelligent and incompetent some of these people are

One thing, does one have to pay tax on gambling winnings if you are a professional gambler?
If you just appear in the system after 20 years of invisibility, questions may be asked, also what about National insurance contributions
I would suggest you have been working abroad, I do not know if they can trace this?

Part time work seems an obvious answer. I do not know where you live, but it is available where I am, it is the full time work
there is a shortage of.You need only do it till the gambling looks up.

You could pay yourself to get trained or educated in something HGV or PSV driver? Even a Doctor, although by the time
you have done it I fear you will be past 50. Still if there is a shortage?

I would suggest you have been working abroad

if you did that youd have to wait a year to claim the dole.

also they could check to see if that was true.
and they may ask for proof like foreign bank and residence cert etc...

Cheers my Friends

I really appreciate all the well thought out posts & is interesting to hear everybody's point of view , especially yours Coach (you're a real Mate) & tend to understand me better than most as have lived a similar life for a long while now

I totally agree with what you say about society & those wearing rose tinted specs at the top Cool

Gery you're also right as I have enjoyed to some extent making my own way in life & have taken a fair deal of pride in being able to do so (as others say it really isn't that easy)

Times are tough & have to face up to that reality but by going & doing a menial job I feel I'd be lowering myself & would lose that sense of pride , losing my true identity in a sense  Plain

It's not that I'm lazy & don't want to work but any kind of job I'd be likely to get wouldn't exactly be rewarding to do in any way for me , so what would a job actually be achieving for me in the long run ?
I don't exactly need another £7.50 - 10 per hour if it's not going to make me any happier , all it would mean is that I'm still living in a flat in an unknown community & could then fester away further , it would never increase my self worth monetary or mentally I feel

also I do enjoy socializing I'm quite a sociable person
I was always out & about in my 20's & generally liked by all so I'm not some social misfit , yes people have let me down in the past so is difficult to put too much faith into meeting new people (especially making new mates - as Coach says)

It's not nice being so isolated but that's the sad reality of the world we're forced to live in today Blush

and Gery no Gambling isn't taxable by Law

also if I wanted to sign on I'd simply 'go broke' & 'lose it' ... I am a Gambler after all Mischief

and if starting my own Business is the easiest way to lose all my money what hope have I really gotConfused

some on here talk as if you really Fear stepping out of line in any way possible , it's my life , my decisions , those are the rules , 6k savings etc , I'm not a mass murderer ffs

I also wouldn't be robbing the state out of housing benefit like millions of immigrants do , which is the Real problem
I've worked hard all my life to be able to house Myself , so I can't actually see them being too bothered paying my council tax & handing me £70 per week to pay bills
Though you're right it's hardly a long term solution , but judging by the way they run this country , they don't do long term solutions anywayz

Well if you feel like that Moonbeam, then you are probably trapped in your present life.
I can understand it, I remember feeling like that at one point in my life.
I eventually got the job I held out for, but in the end I cracked completely...mental health issues.
I never quite came back from that, but survived, the best I could do.

I try to be philosophical about things now, with my gambling I have to be!

I would not go blaming immigrants or those on the dole, these people do what they have to to survive.

I hope you find a solution anywayHappy

I'm sorry to hear that Gery I hope you've recovered & live a more peaceful life now Happy

That's also where I'm at right now & mental health issues really aren't a nice place to be , being left to survive the way I do , this is why I don't feel a job would help me as I'd never really be helping my problems , I've about had enough of it all Sad

ta for that MoonbeamHappy, yes I have reconciled myself to my life now.

I assume you are going to sign on though, your previous post suggested that?

So please stick to that, just check your savings limit, must be on line somewhere.
By:

Just to say I won't be signing on the dole
I've come too far now to give up but as you say I've kind of trapped myself in my gamblers life with no real alternatives

I don't really need too much money to live on but is very difficult to stay focused in life when you suffer such worrying downswings & can really start to affect your mental confidence , physical health & a range of other things

I'll see how I go the next few months , but signing on was always a long term thought process & not something I can just go & do as I feel like it , it'd take selling my flat , buying a house & a load of other things along the way , but still can't help feeling I'd be better off by doing that right now

Much more than the money it's simply wasting my life away being stuck as a gambler , what do I get at the end of it all , there'll be nothing left for me by that time Blush

I haven't even got time to take a break or a nice holiday as others have suggested

I wish I could just travel for a while & feel free for once in my life Plain

Moonbeam. I'm sure that you will do whatever is best for you, personally. That seems to be your only interest...yourself!
You seem prepared to go to any lengths to dodge the system such as disclosure of assets, availability for work etc.
Doing jobs that you consider too menial for your greatness are not considered worthy of your efforts.
What you DON'T seem to realise is that, to an employer, you have very little worth. You have no qualifications, no work experience and no interest. I*f it came to a choice between you and a 16 year old school-leaver, you would be second choice. You have no desire to work and no desire to change. The only thing you DO with any passion is moan and complain!! You'd get top marks for that!

Why don't you actually THINK about what you are going to do...and just DO it?? Why is there always such agonising about every little inconsequence?
Take some time to consider what you HAVE got (and I don't mean your ****ing house or flat) rather than what you haven't?
I suppose you could always join the Navy as a Rear-Admiral and work your way up! Would that be suitable for your skills?

Moaning and procrastinating will get you nowhere.

I'd try to get fit and then try and get a dead end job if I were you.  You can always pack it in if it isn't for you.  Don't be a wimp and do feck all.

if it's depression it will weigh you down like a 40 tonne weight .

some sunshine and fresh air may or may not help Confused but gambling is a well known trigger unfortunately - swings associated with bad losing runs and euphoric winning streaks

It might be that you've got ADD related depression which isn't depression, more like mood swings and you can snap out of it.

Laugh

I hope you do not regret this decision in future Moonbeam, at your age you are very close to
'last chance saloon'

Can you not go back to your parents for a while, if you have any and they are still alive...or are you estranged from them
just to get you through this sticky patch

Maybe you are not telling us something, or perhaps you are now permanently locked in this world of self pity?

I can't see what else anyone can say to you that has not been said......but take care of yourself.

What sort of pension do you hope to get?

Have you given up on the idea of wife and family?

If you sell your flat to get a cheaper house I assume, and live off the difference, that is decreasing your assets?

Your self confessed ambition Moonbeam seems to be to go through life without doing any work and yet have
enough to live on

To be fair, perhaps that is what we would all like?

The dole is the perfect place for you, they pay you for not working. Of course they will set you some tasks
like going on courses(computer) and apply for a few jobs.....surely you can manage that?

Applying for jobs does not mean you get them, nobody may want to employ you, so would probably be safe.

That may be Coachbuster, it is difficult to know his problem without actually knowing him.

I think most people do accept that we have to work, even if we may be reluctant about it.

His sole aim seems to be not working. Really that is a bit ridiculous, there are some cushy jobs about.

Actually if he has paid up on his flat and has no mortgage he is in a good position.

To me it would help him to get some sort of job to get him out, and we all need money.

I don't know, he seems so determined not to move on, he could have psychiatric problems.

But Doctors do not put people on sick nowadays,
By:

some folk breeze through life gery - work doesn't pose any obstacle at all - some even love their jobs  - as menial as they may be ,some folk get on well with others ,work can be a social network to some  - but if moon has had a long succession of  soul destroying jobs he has possibly been put off for life  .

there are some really nasty people out there -  he feels safe in his own 4 walls ,but at the same time he is looking  to improve his surroundings but feels trapped .
By:

I think he does need to talk to someone coachbuster, a like minded buddy, but also more than that, a therapist

He should ask his Doctor for that, to try and help him

Yes there are some really nasty people about Coachbuster, I also think our society is much more vicious than it used to be.

But his life is drifting away.

Still not everybody can be reached Coachbuster, his problems could go too deep. Life is hard for some as you say.
By:

i don't think there is much on the way of work for folk like moony - he needs to make Poker pay ,but that has become so difficult  -

gambling has provided a way out for him in life and it looks like the game is up temporarily .

without it life might be extremely bleak - he is lucky to have his own place - sharing a house is no picnic when you have a social phobia
