Is being a professional gambler different from being really good at finding money in the gutter?
At first you're walking the pavements of monte carlo after a festival weekend. You collect what drunken yacht owners don't mind losing. But after a while it's like walking the gutters around the dale farm estate - the pickings are a lot thinner and the gyppos are your competition. |

Hows things Mooonbeam.
If you play poker for a living and your single you should be taking your laptop with you for a few weeks at a time to places like Krakow or other parts of Europe where its cheap to live and you can look out of your hotel window to new sights and people. You can wander around aimlessly seeing some nice sights in between making a few quid into the bargain. |

You might even find yourself a nice Polish girl to romance and don't be so cynical - they wont all be after your money!

Don't think he's got any money, can't even afford to get the heating fixed. Poor ol' troll

The trouble is if you're not making over 10k year then this life's not too different from being on the dole really is it
_____________________ Moony lad - it's a big difference for me As i own outright it means i don't need as much to live on as if i was paying rent - 10k is easily sufficient . If i signed on i would face questions ,hassle , having to turn up to sign on ,apply for work, the added q's from the bank about JSA payments ,work schemes . Bugger that lot for £70 a week. It would be easier to work for 7 hours in Asda surely ? As far as Spain goes ,i doubt it would be much fun in winter when the holiday season is over -plus the tax laws are different - if you learnt Spainish you could live in real Spain -nice folk the Spanish i have found ![]() Alternatively move to a sunnier and warmer part of England -Birmingham is too gloomy and cold |
|
By:
also Moony lad - if you buy a house you can benefit different ways .
Firstly buy in a quiet street away from hoodlums - but buy one that needs work then set yourself a realistic target to do it up It's a nice project, you get the house you want and you end up somewhere nice -make sure the neighbours are ouit at work if poss - i have been sunning outside in the garden this week and not a peep . ![]() ![]() |

They'll be wise to you spending any money in order to get below
any savings limits. |

Not if he spends it on getting his heating fixed, surely

JML makes a valid point.
just get a PT job for 10 hours - less hassle |

Hi paddletoe
Not good tbh but hope you're doing better , still Arbing ? How much does a 2 week break to Krakow cost nowadays ![]() I agree Coach I doubt I'd feel kinda lost in Spain anyway & probably wish I'd of stayed in my dull flat ![]() |
|
By:
Moving to a nicer part of the country would be a good idea but then the cost of houses might be slightly out of reach too , as you say you can still buy decent houses for around the 90k mark that just need a bit of tidying up
a part time job would be ok but they're not exactly falling out of trees when you haven't worked for so long ! |

You can get a decent apartment in the old town for about £30 a night or there is a lovely old hotel in stay in across from the railway station for about £50 with the old tram running below your window. Food is very nice and cheap.
If your still making money playing poker Moonbeam you should take advantage of the fact you can take your work with you anywhere you want to go. I mean just for a little break now and again. You like history and old buildings. Krakow is full of that kind of stuff and its small so you can walk all around in very little time. I am planning on going by myself sometime later in the year for a short break. |

McM.
Next door neighbour currently in Spain hoping to sell for a 1/3 of the price she paid years ago, been patien over the years but no sign of breaking even any time soon. Do not worry about recent experience in applying for a job, all of the new guys flooding into our busy factory speak little English and have even less experience but are given plenty of time as they keep the take home pay down to 12k per annum. If you live in Birmingham then you need to think about moving on, many here in Leicester are in the same position and preparing for the future elsewhere. All about making the right choices, but at least you have something to sell, the young around me have no future, no drive or motivation, and little hope other than to grow families upon leaving school ![]() Remember that many are worse off. |

environment is important - England is damned expensive moony and i can see the attraction of somewhere abroad ,but there are little pockets and nuggets .
It's damned hard when youre depressed -it's like a ton weight . you just need that spark then you'll be well away . if you can afford it visit Krakow when it warms up over, there are some lovely old towns out that way . |

Would i be better off on the Dole ?
Course not. Jumping through hoops for what? for how long? is it really worth it. Why is buying a house the secret to happiness? I get the impression your misery is fully transferable. |

ARE YOU O ANY MEDICATION
|

you cant stay on the dole forever anyway now , its a few months and they will have you doing courses ( might be a good thing for you )
get a job in a call centre 20 hour a week or so , might be p1sh wage but can meet people |

also moonbeam i would get of poker if its making you feel depressed
i played years ago for a few year stopped , started back up properly a few year ago , the hours to make pennies is not for me , cant be having that , cant go out to some planned events as games last 5 6 7 hours not even logged in poker this year and probably been out as much as the last 6 months or more already get on the football betting or which ever sports you like and master that if you master poker why not anything elseget to the casinos if you want to play poker |
|
By:
been out this year as much as the last 6 months of last year
you stay in and you going to get in that comfort zone of not wanting to move at all |

You are a nice person moonbeam
But you have made this complaint before about the dissatisfaction in your life Do you know what you really want, or where you are going? It seems to me you would be better getting some kind of job, just to give you a guaranteed income full or part time just to pay your day to day expenses You could keep your gambling winnings separate, try to build up a fair pot Still I could never make a living on here, I would starve so well done for being able to I do not think it is an easy way to make money |

Strange isn't it, that we see our "friends" on here, and don't really know anything about them till they "bare their souls"!
Often our image of them is way off line, from what we would have thought! Not naming names, just now, but I had some as being mega successful, till the truth was out. The thing that concerns me most about the OP, is there doesn't seem to be any social life, or interaction with others, on a daily basis. Get out more. Find some common ground with others. Take up a hobby of whatever may interest you, to meet like minded people and have some fun, and social intercourse. When I lost my wife in '91 I resurrected a previous interest in shooting, and joined a "Field Target" club. A couple of hours per day on the range, and the FT course through the woods, was very satisfying, and a great distraction from the serious business on here. Bored with that, after reaching a standard that couldn't be much improved on , I took up golf, (too late in life) but it was another diversion and a challenge. Just getting out to the driving range and doing a couple of buckets, and fifteen minutes on the putting green, then sinking a pint in the bar was great. Meantime I bought a road bike, and can't explain how good it was to be out in the fresh air and sunshine. At the same time I joined a gym so, every day I was out on the bike, or in the gym with like minded people. All of this activity is before the start of racing but, without it, I would have gone mental just sitting here. |

Errr, being 'on the dole' is not supposed to be seen as some sort of steady income to supplement your 'proper job'. You are supposed to be available for work. You will probably (I don't know) have to declare any bank accounts or stashes that you have.
Failure to comply honestly and truthfully to any questions would put you firmly in the 'scrounger' category by my reckoning. You need to either DO something about your 'problems' or carry on as you are...but can you PLEASE stop moaning about it. There is nothing wrong with your life that isn't caused by you, or that couldn't be corrected by making some sort of decision. With energy, decisiveness and dynamism that you display, you would soon get a job as a shelf-stacker. Only time will tell if you can retain the job. |
|
By:
ebulGery, McM is indeed one of the good guys no doubt about that but to have a sole income from playing internet poker and basically having no other interests from what i can gather would send me completely insane personally. No matter what the monetary reward the consequence of basically having no life would be far too a high price to pay. I have already suggested to McM to go and play live tournaments, at least that is interaction with other like minded people and is good fun to boot. Go to Vegas, sh@g a few hookers, have a laugh. Life is for living McM, I wish you all the very best but you know that anyway.

THE DOLE is crap, u only have enough to survive, unless i have a good week on here i cant go out to discoteques r the pub, its grim

Thanks for the honest replies you're all very smart worldly guys on here so they all make me think that little bit extra
Cheers Gery you're a nice guy too , just the gambling environment isn't always a nice world to live in it's quite brutal , which is a lot of what gets me down regularly tbh Chaser you're quite right I am stuck in my comfort zone , but isn't all that comfortable if you get my drift .. I've been extremely ill since Christmas & suffering from terrible Anxiety attacks which are very worrying I actually thought I was having a heart attack & even had an ECG & blood test done to check my heart , so maybe I do need some mild meds I guess this is why I'm worrying & thinking about being on the dole though in reality I won't but a job wouldn't make me any happier as I wouldn't get anything meaningful with my track record I doubt a life abroad is really for me either it's no bed of roses lie some people think & I'd still feel lonely & depressed Thanks Slippy I know life is for living but I've tried my best to improve my lot but just always seem to end up stuck in a rut I've told myself for so long that I just need a bit more money but in reality I'm not sure it'd make me much happier , though would at least mean I could live a more stress free life ![]() |
|
By:
Mean this in a nice way Moonbeam but do you think you might have a mild form of manic depression. Your personality ( at least the only you have on here ) seems to drift between having highs and lows.
|
|
By:
Have you ever thought of contributing to all this medical care that you receive? Or is that just something that is reserved for those who declare their income?
|
|
By:
Yes probably paddletoe , but doctors aren't exactly helpful they just suggest I go to self help groups , which imo would be full of life's degenerates plus I don't like talking to strangers about my life tbh
I've been on meds years ago but they're nasty powerful mind altering drugs ![]() In answer to your question a decent mid stakes grinder would only equate to around £10 hour longterm with variance , unless you were exceptionally good Poker's always been an extremely tough & frustrating job but when I was making 25-30k per year it was worth the effort & I enjoyed the challenge of being one of the best players in the world I guess now is like a big comedown for me , it's not really me that's at fault , just the online environment has changed so much last few years , pokertstars are also now Taxing Uk players indirecty through lower r^keb^ck since the new gaming laws came in the end of last year ![]() |
|
By:
No naydam I haven't .. I'm sure they'll manage without me
I pay my bills , council tax & as you can see I'm now taxed indirectly by the Government although it's not legal for them to do so directly What do you do btw .. another one on a Ponzi pension is a 1.14 shot ![]() |
|
By:
Moonbeam, the history of online poker is the history of the peppered moth. Things evolve.
I agree to an extent your comedown is not your fault. Its the fault of the other players for all becoming too gud! |
|
By:
McM
Sounds like it's all work and no play. Can't you take a break for a couple of weeks and go somewhere relaxing to evaluate things and maybe a way forward? |
|
By:
It's not even that paddletoe you've obviously been gone a long time , player pools are now all segregated , U.S are banned online , France , Spanish the same , new Tax laws for countries like the UK , the list goes on , basically Black Friday was the beginning of the downfall , now it's all Eastern Europeans which have always been fairly decent nitty aggro players
Bet Raise Fold is a good movie to document some of it ! |
|
By:
I had no idea all those things you mentioned had come into poker. When I stopped playing I took a complete break.
I have not as much as played or even watched a game of poker in a few years now. But if I started playing again next week I don't think you could beat me to make it pay if we were the only two players in the world and we had to pay the meter. Neither could I beat you. That's just the way things have evolved in poker unless your one of those rare exceptionally gifted players who can beat the rake at low stakes. |
|
By:
Did not mean to be nosey when I was curious how much you could make playing poker these days. £10 an hour seems about right if your a good player with the proper money management skills. discipline and smarts when it comes to table selection. I reckon I could probably make the same if I wanted but I used to make a good chunk more than that and at £10 an hour I can think of better ways of making money and don't forget poker comes with no paid holidays or long term job security.
If you want my advice start looking for other things. |
|
By:
Yes you're right I agree , basically hourly rates are a thing of the past if you want to make a living you have to put the hours in
I have been looking for other ways but haven't been very successful yet apart from stocks (but not regular opportunities) Still don't know how you claim to make so much by arbing when I can never even find one decent arb (obv I'm a bit daft or you're some kind of super human) ![]() |
|
By:
but to have a sole income from playing internet poker and basically having no other interests from what i can gather would send me completely insane personally. No matter what the monetary reward the consequence of basically having no life would be far too a high price to pay.
yes it sounds some sort of hell Slippy But you seemed to have trapped yourself in it moonbeam. ![]() I doubt you would get a good job moonbeam because one needs qualifications or lengthy training for that. But people still work, people can still make the best of their jobs. If you claim JSA you will have to apply for a set number of jobs per week. I cannot ask your age as that is too personal. But you must not let your life drift away. Yes gambling can be a brutal environment, I always try to make light of it personally, a way of dealing with it, but then I do not depend on it It sounds as if you need medication. But most of all you need to get something into your life besides gambling. Also if you find gambling unpleasant would hardly improve your chances of winning. Less of it might bring your enthusiasm back. I think you are unhappy moonbeam, and I know it is a struggle for you, but gl ![]() Naydam has a lot of sympathy for you I see ![]() I agree Bhoys, the dole is crap, the only people who think people live a life of luxury on the dole are our government and right wing press....only women with lots of kids do that, not single men. |
